Buckshot Bear Posted July 12, 2021 Posted July 12, 2021 What's your projectile weight for your .38's?
Phantom, SASS #54973 Posted July 13, 2021 Posted July 13, 2021 I'm on the 125GR Bandwagon too. Ya need a little recoil to have your best times. Phantom

Buckshot Bear Posted July 13, 2021 Author Posted July 13, 2021 I've ordered 10,000 125gn (I load for 7 people) I was wondering if I should get some 158's but looks like the majority are happy with 125's

I was using a real nice RNFP in 130gr...THAT was a nice bullet. My supplier is no longer around. Still don't get the 105gr craze... Didn't you and Bud do an experiment once??? Phantom

We found that 125gr bullets at about 825fps yielded the best results across multiple scenarios. We probably shot close to 2000 rounds between the two of us that day. Personally, I can't think of a good reason to shoot 105's.
Hoss Posted July 13, 2021 Posted July 13, 2021 I compared 105s to 130s. On a sweep with no multi-taps no difference. In a sweep that has double or triple taps I found, for me, about a .5 second difference on a 10 shot string. Fairly consistently. .5 isn’t much, but over a 10 stage match, 3-5 seconds is a pretty big deal. YMMV! plus, the 105s ore a tad cheaper! i tried the 105s in rifle, they fed ok, but I wanted a bit more feed-back from rifle.
Gateway Kid SASS# 70038 Life Posted July 13, 2021 Posted July 13, 2021 125's at 750 fps in the pistols 147's at 750 fps in the rifle. Use the 147's as knockdowns in the pistol if needed. Regards Gateway Kid
PaleWolf Brunelle, #2495L Posted July 13, 2021 Posted July 13, 2021 157gr RNFP for BP 130gr RNFP for smokeless
Painted Mohawk SASS 77785 Posted July 13, 2021 Posted July 13, 2021 I load 125 grain Conicals for my wife..they load, cycle & perform well... using a Magma caster.
Jabez Cowboy,SASS # 50129 Posted July 13, 2021 Posted July 13, 2021 When I shoot .38s I use 158 gr. bullets . Jabez Cowboy

DeaconKC Posted July 13, 2021 Posted July 13, 2021 I had to go to the 158s in my Rossi 92 because that particular one would not feed 125 or even 140 grain stuff in the .38 case. It would feed anything in 357 cases.
Jabez Cowboy,SASS # 50129 Posted July 13, 2021 Posted July 13, 2021 Just me but i'm kinda old fashioned I shoot my cartridges with bullets close to their original designed weight . 115gr. in .32-20 , 158gr. in 38spl., 180gr. in .38 WCF, 225-240gr. in .44spl. and 255-270gr. in .45 Colt ... Shooting mostly Black Powder ( Not Subs ), but even with that passing fad powder ... Jabez Cowboy
Billy Boots, # 20282 LTG-Regulator Posted July 13, 2021 Posted July 13, 2021 Use some 105s but like 125s for some revolver work and rifles. Find 135s and 147s nice in rifle also.
Dream Chaser, SASS #79316 Posted July 13, 2021 Posted July 13, 2021 Good topic. I use 105 in pistols and 125 in rifle but had been considering, once I need more bullets, of going straight 125 for both. Love hearing the support for that weight.
Sam Sackett Posted July 13, 2021 Posted July 13, 2021 I use 125 TC in both rifle and pistol most of the time. 148 RF when I use APP. sam Sackett

Imis Twohofon,SASS # 46646 Posted July 13, 2021 Posted July 13, 2021 125 RNFP for a couple of different rifles and a multitude of pistols Imis
Ozark Huckleberry Posted July 13, 2021 Posted July 13, 2021 Running a Marlin -- 125 TC loaded long in 38 cases has seemed to run best. It works out for the pistols too -- shoots pretty much to point of aim, and that helps when I'm aiming where I'm supposed to.
Go West Posted July 13, 2021 Posted July 13, 2021 I've been all over the map, but 125s seem to feed best in momma's Lightning, so that's my final answer.
High Spade Mikey Wilson Posted July 13, 2021 Posted July 13, 2021 125 TC except for my Marlin's which prefer 125 RNFP
Shooting Bull Posted July 13, 2021 Posted July 13, 2021 I started years ago with 125s for no particular reason. I then jumped on the 105 bandwagon because I was told less recoil is always better. I didn't notice a bit of difference in recoil but did notice I needed to carry a separate stash of heavier bullets if I ran into a stage that had knockdown targets. I quickly tired of having to remember the heavies so switched back to 125s and have been happy ever since.
Branchwater Jack SASS #88854 Posted July 13, 2021 Posted July 13, 2021 125 grain TC for the smokeless 130 grain RNFP for BP in a pinch, when boxes spill all over, it makes separating the ammo a bit easier.
