For future reference there is a Crap in a Box option that replaces a routine colonoscopy.  Much nicer.  If there are symptoms that require the real deal, you just have to go with it.

On the serious side, I've had the cleanout by drinking the gallon of stuff and with the pills. The gallon of stuff is easier.

 

Also best to have a morning appointment for the procedure.

One advantage to being older than 75...they don't do routine colonoscopy on old farts like me.  Too much risk of damaging the colon.  So no more unless symptoms show up.

I’ve done that 3 times. First two were negative the last one was positive so the doc is recommending a colonoscopy. I’m thinking about it!

 Personally, I'd talk to my Doc and see what other options are available - of course, age is a factor as well.

My dad did not want anybody messing around "down there," so he did not go until he could no longer function. He ended up with a bag.

 

I take the view that a polyp may or may not turn into cancer, but a removed polyp never will. 1st time was 11 polyps, 2nd time was 3. None the 3rd time so now doing the poop on the paper thing.

 

Think seriously about removing whatever is causing bad cells to show up.

All joking aside, I take this very seriously and this is my third one - every 10 years. So far so good. 
 

As I recall, Utah Bob’s son died from colon cancer. Ain’t something to procrastinate about.

In 2000 I had half my large intestine removed due to diverticulosis. I had diverticulitis too often and my doctors insistently recommended surgery. I was 39. I nearly died twice during the operation. Apparently my organs aren’t where they’re supposed to be. The surgeon cut an artery and damaged my pancreas. Apparently the first artery fix came undone and they had to redo it. 
Thankfully I remained completely oblivious under sedation. 
Luckily there was no cancer. 
It took 12 weeks to get back on my feet and a good 6 months before I felt normal again. 
I bring this up because I had a diverticulitis attack when I was 28. The doctors actually ruled out diverticulitis because I was “too young to possibly have it”.

Had they caught it then I may have been able to avoid the surgery 11 years later. Maybe. 
 

Don’t put off testing because it’s gross and inconvenient.

uve had quite a few , think of it this way - when its over and you get good results your good for a while , if you get bad results they caught it early and can most likely fix it , 

 

in the meantime you suffer through the prep and all the indignities of the procedure as well as the inconveniences of the visit to the facility , but you know after that your ok , or you can get fixed , if you skip it you may get a different diagnosis ,

I have family history, have been "done" every 3-5 years for the past 35.  It is much less an indignation than a lot of other things in regular everyday life, in my opinion.  And the "going to sleep" part is AWESOME.  And some funny stuff happens when you wake up but are still not forming memories (the particular anesthesia generally used doesn't really render you unconscious -- it just blocks memory formation so that one second later you don't have any memory of what happened one second before.  (Thus, you are actually "awake" of sorts and can hear and follow instructions during the procedure, like "roll to the left" or whatever.)  My friends who have helped me get dressed afterwards in the doctor's office have told some very funny stories about our conversations in those moments right after "waking up," none of which I have any actual memories of.
