Appreciation for Widder

[Creeker, SASS #43022]

Painted Lady and went shooting Saturday and her Marlin was a gummy, sticky mess.

I informed her that she was more than welcome to the workbench and cleaning supplies as I would not be cleaning her rifle.

 

So...

As I'm finishing up cleaning her rifle and reassembling it - I notice a "hiccup" in the lever stroke that I hadn't noticed before.  Painted Lady informs me, that "hiccup" has always been there and she has just gotten used to it.

 

Trying to ingratiate myself after the cleaning discussion; I decide that I should try to diagnose and fix the problem.

Knowing my Marlin expertise pretty well starts and finishes with taking it apart and putting it back together - I call Widder for advice.

 

Heres where the appreciation comes into play - Widder is a GOOD guy and I have no doubt he would help most everyone who asked.

But I caught Widder at a bad time, inconvenient to him - other things going on much more important than some guy from Las Vegas calling about a Marlin issue.

 

And Widder NEVER, for even a moment, made me feel like I was an intrusion or an inconvenience to him.

Even after letting me know what was going on - he still patiently walked me thru the possibilities and the fixes for our hiccup.

 

I know a lot of us have our friends, mentors and folks we look up to within this game - Widder is certainly one of mine.

Most people think of Widder as a Marlin expert.  Those that really know him has found out he is a 97 shotgun lubricant specialist. He also picked a new job during the pandemic.  He split his time between being a Nigerian financial sales rep specializing in Nigerian war bonds and also a pioneer in the field of automated Medicare Advantage call centers.

It would not be right for me to not reply on this Thread, although I didn't expect such

kind and thoughtful words from Creeker and others.

I have only been able to be on the Wire during the evening hours the past few days because I was at the

hospital during the day hours with my Moma.   Thats what we all called her..... Moma.

Sadly, she passed this afternoon at the age of 96 without much suffering and ALL the kids were able to

be at her side.   Actually, it was a very peaceful passing.

 

My brothers and sister encouraged me to go on to the TN State because Moma kept talking about it for the 

past couple of weeks.   She was as excited about me going as anyone.   Sooooo, I still plan to be there.

 

Again, thanks everyone.   Trying to help others with Marlin issues is always a pleasure of mine and as long as I

can help out, I will continue to encourage my Cowboy and Cowgirl family to always feel free to holler at me.

I think it was 2007 or 2008, Anita Margarita and I decided to relocate to Tennessee.  We asked on a local cowboy club forum if anyone knew of a real estate agent.  Widder replied something like, "My Moma has a license." and that's how we came to know both of them.  To make a long story short...my wife and I spent a lot of time driving around and looking at property with her.  She was a kind lady and we held her in high regard.  

 

And she raised a kind son, too.

I've only talked to Widder a time or two, but he was extremely helpful and polite to me when I did, even with my reputation. Widder, I'm sorry for your loss, most of us have gone through it. My moma passed at the same age. God Bless her, you and the family.

Widder & I joined  SASS around the same time frame. My first rifle was a .45 Cowboy Limited JM '94. It didn't take me too long to get in touch with the Marlin Meister. In 20 years I have never read or heard of his not being a generous, polite and most helpful and giving individual. I can only imagine his sorrow at losing his Moma. He is number 1 on my list of people I would be proud to emulate if I could.
