A Drop of Human Kindness

Recommended Posts

The SASS WIRE was put out here as a place for folks to discuss SASS and CAS.  It was also intended as a place for beginners to ask question.  I realize almost all the the questions there are have been asked at least once but that tiny little fact is no excuse for rude behavior.  Often the replies I see to questions are directed to the "search" feature as if the Beginner was "bothering" someone.  It's really not all that hard to answer the question, then mention the "search" feature in passing.  The Beginners aren't bothering us.  They would just like a little help with playing the game.  Is that really too much to ask??  If you just can't be "bothered" to help with a question, why not just go back to your newspaper instead of making the Beginners feel like they maybe should find a different game.  Just a drop of human kindness goes a long way.

Colorado:

     Well said. My sentiments exactly.

With up to 638,495 Post on the SASS WIRE, one would be hard to find a topic that has not already been addressed.

But times change, rules get updated, and maybe, just maybe, those who know the answer could use a refresher.

New Shooters are joining all the time, and a fresh new perspective on the game isn't going to hurt.

Us Newbies like to hear from the experts and learn from their experiences.

Well said Colorado. If everything has already been covered, let's just shut down the wire and all do the search function. A topic may have been covered 1, 2, or more years ago, but maybe guys like me never got a chance to offer our opinions, experiences or thoughts.

I've been rude before, unintentionally.

Its just wasn't my day to get my words out in a kind way, yet I wanted to feel like i Was helping.

There are some of the most knowledgeable Pards on the Wire who share some of the best information you can read anywhere.   But it gonna happen when something is posted that just ain't characteristic of one of our Pards.   To this, we just gotta take it for what its worth.   We all can have a bad hair day.

CC is a good friend of mine and I'm glad he posted this thread.   It a good reminder of how we should make good attempts to be helpful when possible and try to read and re-read our post before we hit that magic 'Submit' button.

I started to post something similar a few days ago. Treat people like you're face to face on the range. It takes a lot of guts to ask a question here for a newbie and perhaps even more so for someone who has been playing the game for some time and just wants to insure they're making the correct call, etc.

I have mentioned this before.

I used to work in a major casino here in Las Vegas and our office/ working space was near one of the main entrances.

So my team members became a defacto information booth for vistors entering the casino.

And my folks would sometimes tire of answering questions - especially the SAME question over and over.

"Wheres the nearest bathroom?"

"How do I get to registration?"

"Where is the casino cage?"

And with that frustration comes an inclination to respond as if the person asking is either blind, slow or deliberately obtuse to the signage that answered their question or gave them directions.

The one thing I tried everyday to remind them was,

"It DOES NOT matter that YOU have been asked that same question a MILLION times.

ALL that matters is that this is the FIRST time, THAT PERSON has asked the question"

And they deserve the same consideration and compassion as the very first person that asked that same question.

Creeker,

That sums it up right there. BRAVO. :D

We must all "recruit".  A new face at one club will eventually find its way to several other clubs.  They will tell friends that will tell more friends.  If you "recruit" here on the wire or at a gun show. sportsmen's expo, at a match or anywhere else, a little bit of recruiting goes a long way.  I see it working all the time.....but not so much here from time to time.
I know we have seen the same questions over and over again, but we have not see them from the same people.
Mama always said, "if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all."

Great post Colorado Coffinmaker :D

I have been guilty of writing a post or an email with no ill intentions at all only to find that my written word didn't come across as I had meant it.

I have also caught myself being snippy with folks on line here and elsewhere when I have been in a bad mood.

Something I try to do before I post is read what I have written and just make sure that it's conveying what I want it to say. The other thing I do is, if I am in a bad mood, I will not post if something gets me riled or I will walk away and come back to it later if I really feel that I need to respond. We aren't on a time clock here and just because someone asks a question it doesn't necessarily mean that you need to answer it if you really don't want to.

It's not only new folks that get testy responses. A few months ago I asked a question about the Rossi 92, I believe. I had never owned one or even shot one. I don't remember my exact question but some joker, I can't remember his name, said "With your SASS number how come you don't know this?" or something like that in a very snotty way. I responded nicely but had I responded the way I wanted to Allie would have been giving me a stern talking to, I'm sure. ;)

Sometimes you just have to take a step back.

If you want to see something interesting go to Google. Type a question related to one of the guns we use for CAS or reloading a cowboy round like the 38-40 or maybe a question about black powder loading. Then click search. You will probably see links to the SASS Wire. Click on one of those links. What you will see is what a possible new shooter will see or what a possible new CAS shooter will see...also, what one will see is what people that don't think we should be allowed to do  what we do will see. ^_^

Life can't always be sunshine and snacky cakes and no one wants the Wire to be all "Kumbaya" with hand holding while we skip down the happy trail, but it doesn't have to be crotchety and bitter either.

My 2 cents.

I've been bit for asking questions that everyone else on the Wire seemed to know the answers to. I've been around long enough to take it in stride but it stings even for an old hand. On other threads we talk about the dwindling numbers in SASS and the need to attract fresh faces. The Wire is the most far reaching and cost effective way to do that. We should be at least as nice here as we are to a spectator that approaches us with questions at a match. And that search bar aint as intuitive as some here would have us believe. I always try it and if I don't have any luck I go to Google which  often brings me back into the Wire but filtered better than the SASS search bar can.

I ain't sayin' I'm a font of patience and human kindness. I've made posts I've regretted but we, myself included, need to be better at remembering that, like others have said so well, it takes a bit of faith and hope to ask questions of strangers. Often our answers determine whether we stay strangers to them or not.

Lead Friend hit that nail on the head! The SASS Wire "search" function is limited. Also, it only works for posts in the last few months, if I remember correctly. (Unless Allie extended it) Posts older than the allotted time period are archived. They are accessible via Google and other search engines but not through the Wire. Older posts or threads can be seen but not commented on, You will see a message at the top that says:

Archived

This topic is now archived and is closed to further replies.

So when someone comes on the Wire seeking answers don't assume that because you saw the exact answer that they are looking for a few months ago on the Wire that using the Search function will do them any good. :)

Great post. I have seen questions answered with posts about doing a search many times also. I have always thought to myself why would I want to belong to a forum of like minded individuals if I wanted to just use a search feature. I want to participate in a conversation about things I want to know about or maybe pass on something I know about, not do a search. Honestly the only time I use it is when I want to find something I recall being posted recently and want to read it again.

I have found something that helps me when I feel obligated to, figuratively, rip someones throat out.  I write my threat in great detail using the foulest language possible, sit back, re-read, relax and hit the "Delete" key.

I saw the question and the response that sparked this thread. While I too feel that it was unnecessarily blunt and unfriendly in tone, I will say that the responder is a person from whom I have learned a great deal on this forum. That type of response is far from his regular way of answering. We all have bad days or moments of irritability whether for good reason or not. I'm hoping that whatever it was causing him to feel that way has passed, he is a good guy.

I wasn't aware that this thread was in response to any particular thread either living or dead, or loosely based on actual events, and I have no idea if the thread took place in Minnesota in 1977. My post comment was meant to be "in general", and was in no way meant to directed at any particular person, event, or historical inaccuracy.

The poster Smokestack is referring to, has my respect too, which he well knows. I didn't even bother to write him about his comment as it wasn't THAT rude. It was more like what I would consider curt. Still it was not very welcoming and the newbie responded in kind, which did not help the tone of the thread. My theory is that snippiness begets snippiness.

So Shorty, yes there was an actual thread. I might not have read it if it hadn't been reported to me.

When I was new here I asked a lot of questions and I always felt welcome to do so. I got tons of very good help and info along the way. It made me feel valued even as a new shooter.

I'd hope this is how everyone feels.

I hope I do the same for others as you all did for me.

i, mot sure where the consensus lies , as if that would affect my answer , i agree with the references to past posts - but , the ,majority of beginners are not that savvy to the ways of the forum and are looking for help here , i don't see a problem with giving an answer ,albeit short , then offering the archives as a source for further enlightenment , just thinking to preserve the new recruits - unless you dont want new shooters

Hey!! I too was new to this game many years ago..:)

I asked a lot of purty simple (dumb comes to mind) basic questions..

Almost every response to my questions were helpful and respectful..

"Almost?".. :( I kinda figured everybody has a bad day now and again..

once in a while I'd get flamed.. But.. To my surprise??

just like here.. Fellow cowpokes on this wire came to my defense..:)

i am brand spankin new here. just joined SASS and have not yet been to a match. I suspect I may ask a few stupid questions along the way. Good to know most of you would be willing to suffer my ignorance. Looking forward to getting to know you all.

It's not only "newbies", older shooters that have been around may have questions about some category or guns they have never shot or have very little experience with them.

Good post Coffinmaker!!;)

It often reminds me of church. My pastor stresses over and over, if a visitor walks in the back door it's everyone's job to smile at them, shake their hand! Tell them you are GLAD they are here!!! If you grumble and have the "well they won't be here long enough for me to put forth any effort". Guess what! Your right!!!

i often see folks that have shot SASS for years treat guests on this forum like crap, instead of having the response..."welcome!!! I am so GLAD you are here!!! How can we help you learn about our sport and shoot with us!!!" ...if we don't change our attitude toward guests you know what, we won't have a game nor a forum to enjoy before long ....

    I agree.

I always, when providing either information from current, or archived threads, a link that the Guest or New Shooter can merely "click" on to get to the information I am referring to. For example for 5962b5b485564_MyLatestGunCartbyYulLose10_23_2013.JPG.38806feb6d735cd65d196edd8349e08b.JPG ** I would leave the following link:

(Just click on the blue name) :)

That way, I have done the work/research for them, and they get the benefit of reading additional insightful knowledge from our vast array of experienced shooters. Heck, I may find I'll uncover an archived thread from long ago that a seasoned shooter now, asked back then when they didn't know the answer.

** Yes, Yul Lose has been making gun carts of great quality for years.

i have been into black powder revolvers for nearly 20 years now and i went to a cowboy action shoot in Maine several years ago to see what CAS/SASS was all about and to gague if i would be interested in it. I was snubbed by everyone there and it turned me off to SASS for years to follow. at the GAOS in pennsylvania i met some guys and gals at the SASS booth and they seemed nice enough so a few weeks afterward i watched a match at CASS here in WV and was very, very warmly welcomed. heck those guys were practically throwing guns at me to try!!! i has sooo much fun i went right out and i bought the shotgun i needed and then a few weeks after a rifle, reloading equipment, joined SASS and CASS. i now wish those guys in Maine would have been more welcoming because i missed out on years of fun because of how standoffish they were to me.

didn't quite get the warmest greeting when i first came to this forum either, in fact, a guy on another forum i'm an admin on made a comment about it in a SASS thread i started... but i didnt let that stop me, i had already had CAS/SASS lead in my bloodstream and was searching for a "support group" to make smoke and noise with.
