Recommendations For a Knife

I'm thinking of getting a bowie knife for my daughter's boyfriend for Christmas. Nothing elaborate, and certainly nothing overly expensive. Still, I would like it to be of reasonable quality. I've been away from the knife thing for awhile, so I thought I would see if anyone had recommendations. Larger manufacturers are OK.

The mother of anyone to suggest other than a bowie knife was a hamster, and their father smelt of elderberries.

I wouldn't get him anything sharp...

Look at Silver Stag. Reasonably priced and made in USA. I have the Pacific Bowie.

I think the prices may surprise you.
Also, you’ll find that some dipsticks got together and started calling anything with a 7” blade a “Bowie knife”.

A lot of these are imports but they look great, but lower priced.

I have a Bowie knife somewhere packed away. I will have to find it and see who made it. It’s a tough good looking knife. I have used it numerous times for dispatching tree limbs and brambles.

Check out Smokey Mountain Knife Works.  They have a good variety at All price points.

I found these yesterday at Sam's club on sale for $25.  Individually the knives list for twice that.  I know it's not a Bowie but I hate losing an expensive pocket knife.  Or you could stash them around the house.  I bought a pack for myself and two more as Christmas presents.  Others viewing the thread might be interested:

Bear and Sons make a good user grade bowie knife that is relatively affordable ($100-140).   They tend to be a little less finished than a Buck knife.  They are all made in Alabama last I checked.

Don't buy 'em if you don't like 'em.

I guess I’m not compensating quite as much, but I do like the brand!

NICE.

If someone were to get me a nice knife, this one posted by SS would be a good choice.

I love that handle.

Your daughters boyfriend should be VERY proud to receive that as a gift.

EDIT:  Last year for Christmas, my son-in-law got a nice gun safe from me.

This year...... he'll get a Kimber .45 and a set of reloading dies.

He's been wanting a .45 ACP for a few years so this one should 'make his day'.

..........Widder

Eh, he’s a good guy with a good head on his shoulders. Besides, when it comes to sharp things, I’m not worried about my daughter. When able to see inside my gun safe and view some truly beautiful firearms, she reached for my Fairbairn-Sykes and said when I passed away, all she wanted was it. I went ahead and gave it to her recently. She also taught axe throwing for a time. She wants a “pretty but practical” folder for Christmas.

I put this one together, I did not grind the blade, but I cut the stag horn and made the handle and assembled it. I made the sheath and the belt also (covid quarantine project)

A lot matters on what your definition of "Bowie" is. If you search "Bowie Knife" pretty much any fixed blade over 5 inches will come up. Some of them pretty far out there. Like some of the Fantasy knives.

So how big, what style blade, what handle material, and how much?

For me, when I think Bowie Knife, I think something like the old Western Bowie.

What Was The Western W49 Bowie Based On?, 45% OFF

A lot of older Western movies had characters using WW2 Marine Corps K-Bars.

I have one of these in a boot sheath for Cowboy Shooting

Some of these knives are VERY expensive, (I consider $200 a LOT for a knife, others don't), and some are very inexpensive, around $25 or so. If he's going to use it for serious use, you'll need to pay more, if it's more décor that not, something less will do.

So what say YOU?

I have an old Western Bowie on my gun belt. Not for the faint of heart at 9.25" blade. But, it's a workhorse and damned near indestructible. Likely you can find one on ebay.

Is it a knife you think they will never use, or what we call, a "coffee table knife" that you really think looks cool?  If it's a "coffee table knife" then just find the coolest looking knife at the lowest price.  If it's going to be a "working knife" then follow the above suggestions from knife guys.

Howdy,

Bowie  has a lot of variations.

Im not sure but would a Puma White hunter fill the bill?

I found a bowie survival type at Harbor Freight for about ten bucks.

Sure plenty to pick from.

Best

I have a 8" Linder Bowie that is a great knife, but I don't think Linder is still in business.  They were out of Solingen, Germany and had been in business since Noah beached the ark.

This is the company I was trying to remember yesterday when I saw Doc’s OP. Thank you for posting it. I also added them to my “favorites”.

I have bought several utilitarian knives from these folks and all of them have worked out. Unfortunately I managed to give them all away at one point or another and could not remember the name of the company to save my life.
A friend of mine in Oregon who had a knife sharpening business was very impressed with the quality of the steel they use. He wasn’t real impressed with their utilitarian appearance but he had nothing but praise for their steel both in strength and holding an edge.

Living in an urban area as I do, my daily carry is a PUMA 965 folder, on my belt, now that I'm retired and no longer have to wear a suit and tie.

Before I retired, it lived in my pant pocket, handy and unobtrusive.

Back to my roots now: Jeans and cowboy type shirts, every day.

Before I came East and married an Eastern girl, I worked summers as a cowboy. (Emphasis on boy!)
