Range Stool Suggestions Sought

Ozark Okie

I'm getting to the point where the 3hrs plus on my feet for a match is a bit tiring. Guessing that I'm not the only shooter to experience this, I'm looking for information about how others have handled it. I know some gun carts have a built in seat, but my small Rugged Gear cart, which is perfect for my guns, isn't suitable for a seat. Probably some sort of stool, likely folding, though folding isn't as stable. I'm 5' 8" about 180lb all gunned up. Enough said, you get the idea what I need.

As always, I will appreciate any advice, comments, suggestions.

Thank you,

Ozark Okie

I have the WalMart folding stool, a couple of them as a matter of fact.  I also have a bigger folding stool that has a low back and a foot rest that Schoolmarm bought for me to use on stage with the band.  It’s a little more unwieldy, but much more comfortable.

I weigh on either side of 250 and the WallyWorld stools hold up fine and they’re inexpensive.

My other stool is over $100.00!!

This is the one I see most often.  It's $16 at WalMart.  Many shooters have made custom covers or had a leather seat made.  They fold up and are easy to carry by hand or via guncart.

+1 for the Walmart stool.
High enough to be easy on the knees.
Light enough to to fold and carry or place on your cart.

Mine is decorated up by a local leather worker.

I’ve used the Wally World stool. It works ok

this one works much better. Height adjustable, folds up nicely. Padded seat (much mo comfortable!) and the feet are wide so it doesn’t sink in soft ground.

I used the one pictured in Black Hills Barb's post above for a lot of years, but I'm 6' 4" and north of 300, +gunbelt, guns, etc, and it always worried me a bit when I sat on it. This one is a little heavier constructed and has a back, but it's too tall, even for me. I cut 4" off each leg with a tubing cutter. :) Mainstays, from Walmart.

The Walmart stools because so popular that people were taking home the wrong stools. We put orange tape on ours to make them unique.

Padded the lid of the box on my cart. Shaded with a 7 ft umbrella and I don't have to bring anything extra, just close the lid and sit.

OP stated his Rugged Gear cart wasn’t suitable for a seat.

Another endorsement for the stool at Walmart. I got the taller height (come in 18” &24”) since I’m 6’2”and in red so it would stand apart with all the other ones. I super glued the rubber leg caps on because they kept coming off when the stool sunk down in the soft ground. I liked it so much I bought a second to use at the reloading bench. I’ve had it for 10+ yrs.

I put a hook on the back of the curved handle of my rugged gear cart and carry the stool that way.  The legs fit in front of the rear axle and are off the ground about 6".

It's out of the way till needed

Could you post a picture or two of this?

TNX!

I'm also a fan of Black Hills Barb's selection.  I'm a former college football player who's now a smidge over 300lbs.  My first Wally World stool lasted over 10 years.  A weld broke on a leg support when I shifted on an uneven sitting area.  My replacement is going on 4 years.

So many of our local shooters use these stools that people have started spray painting them different colors or personalizing the seat.

When I weighed north of 230 mine (just like this one) folded like a cheap suit -- underneath me.  It works great as long as you are 100% careful to sit flat on the seat and the base is 100% flush on level ground.  If there is any tilt to it, all of the force is concentrated on just a few of the interlocking "links" and when one cracks the whole thing falls apart.  I now weigh 195 but I still don't trust this design.

If this works, here are a couple of Wal-Mart stools I use. Put leather tops on them with some design.

my wofe found a nice light folding stool for me at a garage sale , it will be attached to my cart next shoot , ill still be doing my regular posse jobs but i can sit when that moment demands ive had need a couple times recently , when you get old you never know ,

a year ago i needed it and didnt have it a month later i was in getting a pacemaker installed , i didnt realize what was happening to me at the time but ill not be making that mistake again ,  had nothing to do with the shoot - id been experiencing the symptoms for a few months , i just got really tired easy and had chalked it up to old age catching up to me , a lot of my shoots are in the heat and humidity - that takes a toll on the body - a little sit goes a long way

Thank you to all who responded with suggestions and other comments. I did sort of "step in it" with the stool reference...with responses regarding sizes, softening, and steering around. Having grown up on a farm, I'm pretty familiar with all the variations. (though we never used the clinical term for regular old cow piles/flops/chips).

Obviously, the folding Wal Mart is a popular one, and I appreciated the pictures of the leather decorations. I like the one with a back, even if the legs do need to be cut off.  As pointed out, careful placement on level ground is essential to avoid putting all the stress on weak pivot points and joints.   I was thinking seriously about  the  accordion folding one, but now reconsidering.

Finally, to all those who don't believe in resting between stages (or don't need to), I hope that remains true for you for a long time. Unfortunately, time does have a way of changing things. So, I'll go ahead and pick up a Wal Mart folder, Individualize it someway and keep shootin'/restin'/repeat. as long as I can.

Thanks again.
