Sedalia Dave
Gunsmoke. The writers has some creativity and not every show was the same story told a different way. Bonanza gets old pretty fast many episodes tell the same story a different way. Wanted Dead or Alive is also too predictable. If I were Josh Randal I would ask for more episodes that did not involve me getting beaten up or shot.
Father Kit Cool Gun Garth
My choice would be.. I was always a fan of his brother, Peter Graves in Mission Impossible. LITTLE TRIVIA: Yes, that is Leonard Nimoy who starred in this series and in Star Trek both of which aired starting in September 1966 and produced by Desilu Productions. Pat Riot
When I was a kid Bonanza was the show that my old man would drop everything to watch, therefore that is what we watched. We never watched Gunsmoke. My Dad did not like James Arness for some reason. I really didn't care for Bonanza except that when it was on my Dad wasn't such a PITA. That was one thing to like about it. When I got older I liked Gunsmoke reruns but never really got to see that many of them. Watching the whole series is on my bucket list. Hey PAT, to the best of my memory, Bonanza was a big hit because it was IN COLOR and the scenery was awesome. Bonanza was one of the contributing factors that my dad bought a Color TV. At the time, we still had a B&W but our neighbor had a color TV. We would go 'visit' for a short spell when Bonanza came on..... As for Chester on Gunsmoke, I read where he wanted to establish a 'character' and decided to make it a 'limp' with a game leg. And shortly after a few episodes, he had wished he hadn't done it. But I don't know if this is fact or not. If I were the TV producer, I would have a special episode where he took a trip 'back East' to visit a special doctor and came back to Dodge City with a much better leg. ..........Widder
MizPete
Papa was a preacher. When he got a TV, watching on the Sabbath was prohibited. Then Bonanza came on & all of a sudden the Sabbath was not quite so broken by viewing. Personally, I still prefer Gunsmoke.

Charlie Whiskers
Like I said above, I didn't much like Bonanza. My Dad did so like a lot of you have said....that's what was watched. The Bonanza clan would ride through the forests on flat meadows and into the flat as a board Virginia City, Nevada. We took a trip in 63 I think it was, and one stop was in Virginia City, NV. There's nothing flat about that City or what it's built on (the side of a mountain). The only flat spots are the streets and business building floors. We were surprised to see what was suppose to be a wide flat city and you get to play Mtn. Goat to get around.

Ramblin Gambler
gunsmoke for me too. The results are overwhelming. I never even liked bonanza other than the theme song. As soon as it finished I'd change the channel. Only western I liked less was the big valley.

Keystone, SASS # 47578
Gunsmoke over Bonanza fer sure. After my bypass surgery in 2010, the Western Channel started with Ep.1 S1 of Gunsmoke and ran the all the black & white episodes. I was entertained throughout my recovery with Gunsmoke. The Western channel was running on two stations at the time with different scheduled air times, so just in case I missed the earlier showing (incidental nap time) I could watch the second airing. What a blessing.
