Gunsmoke or Bonanza?

Recommended Posts

I don't recall either being played much in our house, but I was fairly young at the time. I tend to recall Bonanza being played a bit more, simply from the theme music. Having watched both a bit more in recent years, I have to lean toward Gunsmoke, although I won't say I drop everything to see it. Watching Adam Cartwright explain the "recent" Dred Scott Scott decision with a Colt Single Action Army on his hip pushes believability more for me than John Wayne's ever present '92.

The westerns I remember most fondly growing up were the Wild, Wild West, which I caught in re-runs; The Big Valley, which again I caught mostly in re-reruns; and The High Chaparral, which I have some memories of in prime time, and much more in re-runs. Linda Cristal was probably my first big celebrity crush.

As I was sitting here reviewing the thread, something clicked, and I do recall the one show my dad made sure to watch and enjoyed during it's couple of seasons on the air was Hec Ramsey.

I liked them both .

And watch them both every day .

With that said Gunsmoke

With Festus !

+1

I too liked 'em both but Gunsmoke was better and had a better variety of "Guest star" character actors.

Another trivia item...

Ken Curtis ( Festus) was originally a singer in the old school country band Sons of the Pioneers.

Unfortunately I never got to see either, but I know my dad was into Gunsmoke big-time during the 1960s which is why he bought his Colt Single Action Army. When I was going though his things after he died I found an old magazine advertisement he had kept for a holster just like the one James Arness used.

Gun Smoke for sure!  When I lived in Ft Worth in the late 90s. I met Bick Taylor (Nooley) (sp) at the 'Ft Worth Stock show. He is a great guy and a terrific artist. I acquired  several of his prints and he signed them for me .  Most are framed and in my home today. He was impressed that I remembered his Dad,  Dub Taylor, who was a second tier actor in may Western movies.  Cheers,  Hoss C.

I remember watching Gunsmoke every Monday night after supper. Dad or I would make popcorn and the whole family would be in the living room watching it. No cell phone, no TV remote, nobody complaining and we all watched it together. After Gunsmoke was All in the Family and then the 4 of us kids were sent to bed.

I liked both, but Gunsmoke was the better of the two.  I hated Wanted Dead or Alive.  Even as a child It was obvious to me that they ruined a perfectly good Saddle carbine to make that piece of junk he shot.

And just to throw a little twist in, how many of you watched  (and liked), The Wild Wild West with Robert Conrad as James T. West?

Gunsmoke

I liked the black & white shows better than the color ones.

story lines changes, and did not seem as good in the later part of the series .
