What's your backup sauce?

Recommended Posts

Ann recently made homemade fries and she ate them with no condiment; however, I typically use ketchup.
On our second day...no ketchup! :(
My usual backup is mayonnaise; yet Ann brought out:

I now have a new backup for fries.;)

That stuff is great.   But so darned expensive.

For fries, if we're out of catsup, backup is BBQ sauce; BBQ sauce mixed with Mayo; Mustard; Homemade Lemon Garlic Mayo, store bought Mayo.

Although,  as often as  not I'll just sprinkle some powdered chicken base on them,  maybe with a squeeze of lemon juice.

I am never out of ketchup and there is only one kind of ketchup and it is Heinz.

BUT, just as @Sgt. C.J. Sabre, SASS #46770said, gravy and ranch dressing are darn good on fries. Sometimes I will put Cholula Garlic Chili sauce in my ranch dressing. That’s good on fries when not having burgers.
I love being back in America again where when you ask if you can get gravy in your fries the waitress always smiles and says “Of course. Do you want beef, chicken or sausage gravy on those fries?”

Makes my heart go pitty-pat, I swear. I love West Virginia.
AND! It’s real gravy too. Not some mock-gravy crap they make to pizz off California vegans like in Oregon and Arizona. It’s real by gawd gravy.
I went off on a tangent there. Apologies.

Well Sorry,

I won't touch a Heinz product since Heinz took most of their operations out of Pittsburgh and moved out of state.  Personally, my "Go-To" Ketchup is RAO'S Ketchup.  As a back-up, though not likely ever needed would be Stubbs Dr. Pepper BBQ Sauce.  Although I have also found "Trader Joe's" Ketchup to be quite palatable.

Anymore I use this stuff on almost everything, not hot but lots of flavor.

I won’t use Heinz because of John Kerry’s wife’s family. I can’t stand that fool! I heard the Heinz family sold out to a conglomerate but I still refuse to use it. DelMonte or Hunts  are my choices.

#1: Real country sausage gravy.

#2: British HP brown sauce.  Saw it on a sitcom years ago and a week or so later saw it in a grocery store.  Tried it.  Like it.

Catchup, ketsup, whatever will never be in my house.  Can't stand the stuff.

Smothered in chili, cheddar cheese & diced Vidalia onions.  Definitely not In-n-Out fries animal style.  I only order my burgers from them animal style.  The fries animal style upset my stomach.

Sorry Rye but you are still using Heinz. They were bought out by DelMotne.

Heinz ketchup hasn’t been made in Pittsburgh in over forty years

Not true! There's this...........https://www.delmontefoods.com/brands

Heinz is owned by Kraft Foods.

Hunt's is owned by Conagra in the Philippines.

The places I eat at HAVE real gravy!

Yep.  Jen's, Backburner, Nanna's, Gabby's Kitchen, Zeke's Eatin' Place, Dinner Bell......and many others.

I make some mighty good hair-on-your-chest sausage gravy myself, with bacon grease,  lots of Jimmy Dean's link sausage, Tabasco, enough flour to stiffen it up (I like my gravy thick enough to sculpt), milk, a tad of water, and Lawry's Seasoned Salt.  Finish it with salt, ground black pepper and some more Tabasco.

I goes perfectly with country biscuits, as a main ingredient in SOS, over toast and eggs, over chicken, with pork chops.  About the only thing it doesn't work well with is vanilla ice cream and apple pie.

Then it was sold to Kraft after my ex worked there. The bottled ketchup has been made in Iowa since the 70’s. All of the pouches were made by one man in

Pittsburgh my father in law

In 2000 Nabisco merged with Kraft foods but In 2006 Kraft sold DelMonte.

My brother-in-law is a Frenchman.  We go to lunch fairly often and he always asks for mayonaise with his fries.  The thought use to make me retch.  The last three or four years I have been to Holland and Belgium several times.  They are crazy for fries (just "fries" they claim fries were invented in Belgium not France) and there are fry shops all over the place.  The first few times I ordered some they came with mayonaise.  I asked for ketchup and they looked at me like I was nuts.  (Probably not a bad assessment on their part!)  I tried it and it was GOOD!  Their mayonaise is not the white processed stuff we have.  It is an off white color and tastes different.  If I could find European style mayonaise that would be my backup or maybe even my primary sauce.

Henry T

That give you any idea how long it's been since I consumed Heinz??

Actually not completely accurate.  Heinz manufactured Ketchup in their North Side facility thru 1999.  then moved production out of state in 2000.

I have several sauces that I use frequently and especially in place of ketchup.

We buy a great remoulade sauce that I always add a little extra horseradish to! Great on all sorts of sandwiches!

There’s a restaurant that makes a superb spicy barbecue sauce that goes well with fish, chicken, or pork and is also great on fried potatoes or onion rings.

We buy a spicy red sauce from a local hibachi restaurant that I use on shrimp and grilled chicken with or without rice.

I make a creamy horseradish sauce that’s far more horseradish than what you can buy and I also add horseradish to yellow mustard!

Schoolmarm makes a fabulous Russian dressing for use on Reuben sandwiches and a chipotle sauce for chicken tacos and chicken quesadillas.

I love a good vinaigrette, usually just red wine vinegar and olive oil with some finely ground oregano, chives, sage, and rosemary.

And we’ll make up a spicy mayo for burgers and hot deli sandwiches.

If I have ketchup or mustard, I’ll have Heinz before any of the others.

I don’t mix politics with food!!

For Ketchup I buy the versions that use sugar instead of corn fructose syrup. Tartar sauce is really tricky. The different brands vary so much in taste, from good to inedible.
