My greatgrandfather came from Riga, Latvia, in the early 1870's. I note in two (2) U.S. Census, that his birthplace in one was listed as "Riga, Russia" and in the other as "Riga, Poland"! Heresy! A true old school Manhattan can be good Rye or Bourbon, sweet vermouth, a dash of Angostura bitters and also has a Maraschino cherry.
