Fully cooked bacon

Yes. It’s pretty good bacon as premade products go. We used to buy it all the time. We stopped because nitrites and nitrates kick off my asthma. If it weren’t for that I would still be buying that bacon and many other things I can no longer eat. Well, technically I could eat them, but I would pay for it physically.

It's a little more expensive too considering you get less than you get with a lb of regular bacon. I don't eat it that often maybe once a week so it's not going to break the bank.

NO.  Absolutely not.  I much prefer Thick Sliced Bacon I have to cook myself.  I do now prepare my Bacon inna oven rather than fry it stove top.  Everything go Better with Bacon you betcha!!

Never tried bacon in the oven! I've led a sheltered life I guess. I'll let ya know, any tips on how to do that or do I have to look it up? :lol:

Hey Rye :)

 

I use a flat Cookie Sheet (with raised edges) lined with Aluminum Foil.  Single layer of Bacon.  Preheat the oven to 400 the shove in the bacon.  Usually 20 - 25 Minutes and it's done.  After the pan/aluminum cools, just roll up the foil and toss.  Enjoy.  Everything goes Better with Bacon (Ecco ecco) :D

You don't turn it?

 

I have never cooked it in the oven. But there is an online story where a guy is. Complete with lining the cookie sheet with heavy duty aluminum foil. But halfway through he turns he takes it out of the oven and turns it over.

I do something similar to Colorado Coffinmaker only I use a toaster oven. I also like thick cut bacon. I use the Hormel Healthy Choice. No added chemical nitrites/nitrates (Shhhh Joe)


Preheat oven to 400°

I take a small flat pan and line it with aluminum foil - 1 sheet = minimum mess to clean up.

I pour a 2” circle of oil - Olive or canola - into the pan and wipe the oil all over the flat part of the pan so the bacon doesn’t stick. 
Place bacon into to the pan in a single layer.

Put it into your oven / toaster oven.

There’s no need to flip it if you oil your pan. 
15-16 minutes floppy done bacon*

18 minutes well done bacon

20 minutes really crispy bacon

* my favorite

 

If you lined the pan properly there should be no real cleanup except for removing and disposing off foil.

My wife used to cook bacon in the oven with some maple syrup on it.  WOW !

 

Also, I've been buying some bacon jerky at Walmart that is maple flavored. Very good !

A friend at church brings it on Pascha night.  It's OK.  A quick and easy way to get a bacon fix. Weird texture.  

 

Re bacon in the oven.  There are lost of ways to do it, and they are all over the place.  Start in a cold oven, preheat the oven, temperature anywhere between 325 and 425.  Turn it, don't turn it,  put it flat on the foil lined baking sheet, overlap it, don't let it touch, put it on a rack on the baking sheet, just toss it into the hotel pan and stir it around every 5 minutes until it's done.  

 

I'm of the "put it on a rack on a baking sheet, overlapping by about 1/3, cold oven set to 400" school of thought on it.

To Rye's original post, I've tried it as the directions state...it was okay, but I wouldn't buy it again. Not enough bang for the buck and it seemed bland.

 

 

Questions for the oven cookers;

 

Are you all using gas ovens or electric?

 

How do you keep the grease splatter down or does it not splatter like a frying pan?

The precooked kind is great for backpacking but is paper thin and lacks a lot of flavor. In the oven, I use cookie sheet and put bacon between two wire grids to keep it nice and flat. I filter and save the bacon grease. When we are in the travel trailer, I will fry a bunch up on the Blackstone griddle, then keep it in zip lock to use later. Pop it in microwave for 15 seconds and its good to go.

To me thin and crisp is perfect for in sandwiches.   Thick cut too often stays tough and chewy so you don't get a good bite through it and end up pulling the strip out of the sandwich.

Maple flavour bacon is popular up here.

Sadly, at my age with my high BP, the Sawbones tells me to "Lay off everything that tastes good!"

Sawmill Mary buys what ever is on sale.  If a real good price, she'll stock up. No brand loyalty.  Usually thick cut. But stuff marked thick cut is sometimes no more than thin.  We're at odds on final product.  I like some life left in it. She wants hers extra crispy.

My wife called it "lazy man's bacon".

 

I prefer Hormel's original Black Label bacon, cook it on a stove-top griddle with a cast iron press.  

 

Add a few eggs and a couple of slices of toast with the jam of the day.  (Surprising how often that is Smucker's sweet orange marmalade.)  

 

Also put some it with 50 /50 apple juice and apple juice, and a cup or two of Farmer Brothers Arabica coffee with a bunch of sugar and I'm good to go.

Same here.  In fact,  I'll spend looking through the vacuum packed "ends and pieces" trying to find the package with what looks like the most decent slices in it.  I'm not doing fancy presentation platters so what it looks like doesn't matter.  $9 for 3 pounds v. $20 for 3 pounds of Safeway house brand slices sounds good to me.   Especially when about half if it ends up being chopped into various dishes anyway.

I use to buy Wright bacon in bulk packs of end and pieces.  I was marked down considerably from regular sliced. But they started jacking the price up until it was no longer a bargen. On sale brands won out.

My dear wife just told me our oldest daughter did this in conjunction with her preparation of the green beans for Thanksgiving dinner. I was totally unaware, although the bacon was very tasty.

precooked goes into the microwave for a couple of minutes. If it is uncooked it goes on the Blackstone right next to the eggs and hash browns. Makes a great meal and smells great while cooking it.

I have a big microwave oven. I use a large flat, oval shaped plate that holds eight slices of thick cut bacon. I sometimes do a dozen slices and spread them after they shrink.

 

One of the local groceries slices their own bacon. I don’t know where they get it, but it’s really meaty and beautifully smoked. It’s absolutely beyond comparison with respect to brand name prepackaged bacon.

 

I put a plate of bacon in the microwave for ten minutes and it cooks in its own grease. At the buzzer, I check it and usually finish it with another minute or two.

 

I like my bacon cooked about the consistency of good moist beef jerky where it’ll break if you fold it but it still has a nice chew to it.

 

I collect the grease and bacon residue in a container to use in other recipes. It’s fabulous when used in recipes where butter is called for like biscuits and in sautéeing onions and mushrooms!

We’ve been doing that for years. Learned from son. Bacon seems to shrink less and  stays thicker too.

I won't pay what they ask for their pre-cooked.  I get the old fashioned cook it yourself kind for about half the price of the precooked stuff.

 

It's one of my few self-indulgences, but I'm worth it.

I tried the pre-cooked stuff from the local grocery store.  It was expensive.  Then the wife of a friend told me to buy Costco pre-cooked.  I did and it was great.  You get at least five times as much bacon as the grocery store stuff for the same price.
