Howdy folks, just starting out and wanted to say Hi.

Billy Goat

Recommended Posts

Howdy, I'm Billy Goat, and am new to Cowboy Action Shooting. I have a heat sensitivity so I am using the time until it cools off later in the year to gather my kit. So far I have a Taylor's/Uberti 1860 Mason conversion in .45 colt, a Rossi R92 in .357/.38, and a Stoeger Coach Gun in 12 gauge (not pictured). I plan on picking up a second 1860 conversion very soon, and plan on eventually getting a more matching kit. I loosely based my kit on the mercenary deputies of Marshall Stockburn from the movie Pale Rider, hence the 1860. I'm still working on everything, but I have time before it's cool enough. Anyway, howdy and I look forward to being an active member!

Howdy @Billy Goat!  Kick back around the SASSWire campfire and enjoy yourself until the Texas heat subsides a bit.

If you haven't already, contact the Match Director at your nearest club and get hooked up with a mentor.  I was very fortunate to have connected with some great cowboys and cowgirls early one who helped me get going.

There are a lot of good people and resources in this sport.  People are always will to take a greenhorn under their wing and mentor them.  This is the one sport where most give more than they take.

Good luck Pard and keep us posted on your progress!

Hi Billy Goat,

good to see another citizen of The Republic joining in the fun.

Know the problem with the heat--Doc just cut off all my outside events but will let me go to the matches (missing out on practice and mowing days as well as attending another club 100 miles up the road.

might want to see if your club would let you shoot a couple of stages before the heat sets in--TRR would do that and let the shooter pay a reduced fee or none at all depending on how many stages they could handle.

On a similar note:  we just changed the rules for one of our mentally challenged shooters (lack of oxygen to the brain--COVID was not his friend).  He shoots all of the stages in a Continuous Nevada Sweep--he can remember that vs. all the different ones we have throughout the match.

He's back to having fun again--that's what it is all about--taking care of our fellow pards

Thanks folks! I had checked out the nearest club back in April before it got really hot and absolutely loved it. They were going to let me shoot a stage with borrowed guns but due to a miscommunication on my part I left just before then unfortunately. I'm absolutely going to do every match I can as soon as it's cool enough. What's cool I've noticed about CAS compared to other sports is how welcoming and friendly folks are. I'm Neurodivergent, on the high functioning Asperger's side of the spectrum. Intelligent, but a goober, and people have been very friendly and not judgmental.

Welcome aboard!  Git your kit, git out, and git to shootin'!  There's lots to learn, but plenty of fun to be had, and friends to be made, along the way.

Cheers!

Welcome Billy Goat; find a local club and I'm sure there will be plenty of members who will share their knowledge of the game. It happened to me and is an ongoing thing; I couldn't be more pleased.  Again welcome to SASS.

Nice pic Billy!  You're definitely looking the part.  Welcome and I hope to shoot with you someday!  The best part of this game is traveling around the country to different shoots and meeting all the great people in this sport.

I have a bunch of movies I love, Lord of the Rings trilogy, Planet of the Apes prequel trilogy, and the Avatar Movies, but as far as westerns go my favorites are the remake of 3:10 to Yuma, Pale Rider, and for a modern day western, Hell or High Water.

After price comparison and consulting with my local club, I ended up ordering two 1860 Army Richards-Mason Type II conversion revolvers in .38 special to match my Rossi R92 (which I intend to eventually replace with something more authentic like an 1866 Winchester) and to match my inspiration theme of one of Stockburn's Deputies. That completes my hardware kit for now, I have time to get a proper hat and finish my outfit before it's cool enough for me to shoot.

Billy Goat,

I shoot a pair of the same pistols ( in .45 Colt) , and I really like them!

They point really naturally, no searching for the sights. Just like pointing your finger.

Hope you like them as well as I like mine.

Have fun!

Welllllll. They's one feller what lurks around here is plenty judgemental. He goes by the name Widder, just in case you cross paths with him. I wouldn't trust much of what he says neither. He lies like a lazy cur dog.:P

Now that Hell or High Water movie you mentioned is a mighty good one. It's worth watching it just to see that waitress trying to find out what them fellers don't want!

Welcome to the club..

Howdy BG and a big yeehaa!  Your choice in pistolas is a fine one.  Just so you know, the guns you are ordering won't look exactly like the ads.  The .38 spcl 1860 conversions, both Richards-Mason and Type II, both have the '51 Navy frame and cylinder, but with the Army grip and barrel.  So there is no stepped cylinder or notched frame like the .44 and .45. The catalogs and websites only picture the Army frame.  But it is only of concern to a purist, and a purist would order one in .44 anyway. :)  HOWEVER, since a '61 barrel looks like a '60 barrel, changing the grip from Army to Navy turns it into a 1861 Navy Type II conversion.  That's what I did to mine, plus I prefer the smaller Navy grip anyway.  It gets paired with a .44 Type II, with Navy grip also.  I do have longer barreled guns as well, I like them all.

Interesting details. I pick them up tomorrow, assuming they don't get lost in the Tropical Storm on the way to my FFL lol. I have very small hands, even for my size (I'm five five), but I have found surprisingly that I prefer the larger Army sized grips over the smaller Navy grips. I owned a cheap Pietta 1873 in .45 colt, did not care one bit for it once I actually fired it. Kicked like a mule, even with very light loaded cowboy loads, and I couldn't hit the board side of a barn with it. The exposed screw hole in the cheap plastic two piece grips also tore my hand up every time I shot it. Ended up selling it on consignment and used the money for a CZ P10C for a real life carry piece.

Everybody has their own preferences - if we all liked the same thing it would be really boring. :)  And most of us end up with more than one set of guns (in some cases, a lot more).  Post some pics when you get them.  They will be noticeably heavier than your .45 conversion, so shooting .38's should have minimal recoil.  The Type II's sometimes don't fit in the same holsters as other guns, because of that larger underlug area of the barrel.  You will just have to try and see.  Fun times await!
