Jackets For Winter

I'm getting geared up to shoot through the fall and winter months.

I live in Sacramento so we have no snow, but the temperatures can get down into the high 40s and low 50s.

What old west style jackets do you pards recommend?

I’ve got a custom made blanket coat that I’ve worn a few times Kinda like the one on the left in this picture but the one that I really like to wear is the one on the right. You might think it’s too warm of a coat but it’s really comfortable to wear. I wore it at a Cajon match in the middle of June.

I have a leather fringe jacket from Sportsmans Warehouse and a long old Swiss coat that I changed the buttons on.

will wear long underwear, a shirt, sweatshirt, and this so I can take off/put on layers as needed

Navy Peacoat.  But, I've always found that keeping my feet dry and hands & head warm is more important than a heavy coat... Usually take the coat off when actually shooting.  Layering is mighty important.  I have a "blanket coat", but it's unlined and when windy, it doesn't do much to keep me warm.

A buffalo (yeah that's right I refuse to say bison) or bear coat is on my "someday" list.    Which is unfortunately a pretty long list.

Ordinary canvas "duster"

 

To which I add a surplus US Army field jacket liner. You can sew on buttons to the duster to attach it, or just wear it under the duster.

 

As stated elsewhere, the "base layer" long underwear can really help. Types run from thin "silkweight" for cool weather, through standerd/medium to "polarweight".

 

Generally, I need a size larger shirt and pants for polarweight.

 

With the base layer, the duster and liner are good down to "frigid". The long duster is also a better windbreak, covering more of you.

 

There are also similar fabric baselayer hats. A thin one fits under a cowboy hat.

 

Good insulating socks are also a big plus.

Got a few things for when it gets cold - 

 

First is the union suit.   Nothin' more old-west cowboy than long johns

 

Second (particuarly if it's raining) I've got a replica of a civil war rubberized rain cloak.   Which is surprisingly good for keeping the heat in.   

 

Finally, I've got frock coat I'll wear if it's down below 50 or so.

I like my winter attire to be from Hilton, or Hampton Inn.  I keep quite warm and there is always Coffee and a Breakfast included. 

 

I don't have any desire to be out in the COLD.  This game is suppose to be FUN.  Being Cold is NOT FUN.

Don't know about folks from other states, but here in AZ, especially the high country cold Prescott area in the winter, and the Phoenix area can get cold in winter, I have found that if my feet and hands are warm it seems the rest of my body is warm.  Of course have to take off the gloves when shooting, but when not shooting have my warm gloves on all the time.

Thermal underwear of course is a must in cold weather.

I wear a waxed Aussie Drover coat with a heavy, hand knit sweater under.  Double plus on boots, hat and gloves.  I wear the gunbelt outside the coat.

"Hot Hands" hand warmers.   They're cheap, about 75c a pair and stay hot for hours.  Stick them inside your gloves to keep hands warm while not shooting.

Up here in New England, Fall and Winter shoots can get below freezing. I have found an original Hudsons Bay coat just like one Gene Autry wore in one of his early movie. It weighs a ton but is very warm. With my rabbit fur "mad bomber" hat my head is toasty. For more temperate days, I have a lighter wool jacket. The coats and glove come off to shoot, but go right back on after unloading.

 

As a side note, I can't imagine how cold the cowboys in the late 1800's must have been most of the time. They were some tough dudes.

At those moderate temperatures, you only need an undershirt, shirt and a wool vest.

Waxed dusters are surprisingly warm even without a liner. Hand warmers that recharge with USB are the new best thing to staying comfortable in the colder months. Some folks might even enjoy a heated vest and/or socks.

  I took a U.S. Navy raincoat and cut the epaulets off.  It's now a black fabric duster, with a zip-out liner.  Moderate weather with wind--no liner needed, and belts go on outside of coat.  

Look for one in Thrift Stores or surplus stores.

Heavy Whites boots with wool socks keep my feet dry and warm. Thermal long johns, jeans a Henley tshirt, an Outback duster with liner. Currently looking for a high quality water resistant winter hat and better gloves.

 

my Knudsen hat let me down at SC State during the Cold Wet match, so I want something better.

Here in South Carolina we don’t have enough cold match days for some to justify purchasing a period correct coat or jacket so at monthly matches my view is that I don’t care about your outerwear or your underwear-dress comfortably.

 

Personally (and I am cold natured) I wear a good base layer topped with either a wool frock coat or a wooly fleece lined Carhartt short jacket.

I ordered a feaux wolf coat onve and when it came it looked like a felt robe. 

That coat you have looks perfect for my aesthetic.

Same here except my hat isn't waxed but is waterproof. Both from Outback Downunder. They work great in most weather for me.

i have a poncho i can wear but anything into the 40s is not really cold here - just slip the duster on between stages , NOWwhen it gets below zero i just dont shoot

I'm not in a cold weather area to start with. A little cold weather is one thing.  But if looks like it's going to rain or even worse be windy too, I'll be at home. Unless I've traveled to a big match, then you just suck it up and deal with it.

Carhart's are great. My whole family wear them around the barn when taking care of the horses. They were warm and indestructible.

All in with Carhart, but what about the sewn on label?  Isn't that against SASS rules?
