Pre-Checking Shotgun Hulls - Using SlixPrings
Whip Assalot replied to Whip Assalot's topic in SASS Wire
If you scroll up, or go to the previous page, I added a picture of my crimp. I had a small hole and adjusted the pre crimp so it closed it up. I am still using a 1 ounce shot load bar as I still have some Clays CB100 wads. After I use those up, I will switch to a 3/4 ounce shot load bar and a CB 0175 wad. I really appreciate the help and advice! 🙏 -

I would say I have a little experience, but still find myself learning things, especially for more experienced reloaders than me. This is why I ask so many questions so I can get good information. I recently moved to a new location, and just found a cowboy group in the area last month. I'm still trying to establish myself and make some friends, and possibly somebody to mentor me and help me along my reloading journey. -

Honestly, I have never measured my hulls. They are all Winchester AA that I got gifted to me from workers at a range a while back. Some look fairly new and others are a little scuffed up. -

What if I change to 3/4 shot, don't I need to change my wad size? -

The one that is open is before I made an adjustment just right now. The one that is more closed is what it is looking like at this time. -

Using the MEC Grabber 8567 with a QuikLoader Taper Die in the last station. Right now, I have it set up for 1 oz loads, but I just picked up a used 3/4 Oz bar that I was thinking about using. AA hulls with Clays CB100 wads, Cheddite primers and Perfect Pattern powder with a #15 bushing which loads 13 Grains of powder and using either #7.5 or #8 shot. -

I see a lot of cowboys bad mouthing AA shells. I stayed with them because I heard they were too notch. I tried to reload Remington Green, but my crimper wasn't set up for it. What shells should I start collecting? -

Part of the reason I started doing this, was that I had a pillowcase sized bag full of hulls, all of them AA's. Some of them looked fine, and others looked scuffed up. I wanted a quick and easy way to figure out which ones would load, or better yet shuck out of the shotgun after shooting it during a match. I've had some that looked really good, went through the size checker, and then after the shop, failed to shuck out. Others, have come out real easy after shooting. I just don't want to load several hundred rounds and waste primers, powder, and shot, just to have them not perform the way that I need them to. Perhaps there is a reason why people buy and sell "Once Shot AA Hulls" ?!?! And even though I have a taper installed in my MEC Grabber, I have sort of made the decision to try and buy brand new AA shells from the store and shoot them at EOT, and other State and Annual matches. -

Welp.... Not to answer my own question, but I did take some hulls and put them through the shell checker and they slipped in and out quite easily. So I loaded them up, and even though some of them had a lot of wear on the side, after they were loaded, they slipped in and out of the checker just fine. But please, chime in with your experience. -
Has anyone ever used the SlixPrings shotshell checker to pre-check hulls before reloading them? https://www.slixprings.com/proddetail.php?prod=SliX-Shotshell-Checker-Sizer-Combo I have a couple of hundred hulls and I'm not sure which ones are worth reloading. Obviously, I check every round after it comes out of the reloader, and I find that some of them will not go in or come out easy, so I put those aside for practice rounds. I started putting them in my shotshell checker and some of them are really tight while others slide right in. Could this be an indication that those hulls that slide right in would be more suitable for reloading than the ones that get stuck in the SlixPrings checker?

I have a lot of AA 12 gauge hulls and assorted .38 shells, both brass and nickel. How can I tell if they will give me problems with shucking and are unfit to reload? I mean, besides the obvious that the hulls are scratched up or cracked. I have some that have some scratches on them, and others where the "AA" label is completely gone, but it still feels pretty smooth. And then .38 shells...do you continue to reload them until you find a crack or it becomes a problem in the reloader? Pictures would be helpful if you can upload them. Thank you!

A little too much brown in them. Looking for all black with silver spots
