we had a shooter that carried both Colts butt forward and drew like Bill Hickcock. he made sure barrels were not pointed at anyone. Only shooter I ever saw doing that.

We had a shooter that did that as well. He was very careful and also very slow !😂

I've only seen one person do that. I told him, with a straight face, that he forgot to turn his belt around when he got suited up...he was not amused.

@Wild Bill Blackerby SASS # 34989 is the only one I know.  Probably one of the ones the Horg is referring to.

Yeah, like that video, sort of. But if you look at the photo of Bill Hickok looking like an honest to goodness frontiersman (I really need to get my outfit better together) you'll see his pistols are pretty far back behind his hips, which makes the cavalry twist much easier.

I shoot frontiersman with a 7.5 inch '51 and an 8 inch '61; cross draw on my left side and straight draw on my right. If I situate it right I can cavalry twist draw the left pistol with my left hand. It works fine, I don't break the 170 rule, but I'd be worried someone would think I am (and it is VERY easy to sweep yourself).

I can see why Hickok might have carried that way, it's pretty convenient for sitting on things other than chairs (stools, probably horses) and it makes both guns available to both hands.

never thought to do that as it seems unnatural to my mind , if it works for someone i cant argue as im also slow and deliberate these days

That video (#2 of two) was made to demonstrate that shooters utilizing Gunfighter style could do so SAFELY without sweeping themselves or breaking the 180.

Until the rule was changed (2016), simultaneous "Cavalry/twist draw" was not allowed due to safety misconceptions.
They were done sloowwly on purpose...in actual practice it is MUCH faster.

This is the first VIDEO made to demo the other method.

I used to do this more often, not too often these days, but when I want to use 7 1/2" barrels and traditional-style leather, I wear them butt-forward.  Then when it's time to shoot, I move the gun on the left side forward on the hip and use it as a cross-draw, then the gun on the right is drawn with the cavalry twist but is hostered in a two-handed move that is easy for me than the cavalry twist.  No video, just pics:

I do.  Beaucoup style points.  Would be even more if I had ivory grips like PWB!

Wild Bill didn’t have to worry about breaking the 170 or sweeping himself or anyone else for that matter.🙂

I remember some years ago there was an outcry by members that were upset that other shooting sports didn't take "us" seriously...gee...wonder why...

The cavalry draw, properly done, with practice, can be done without sweeping yourself. Unitil I started CAS, I wore my hunting single-action on my right side, butt forward, as I could get at it with either hand...useful in case you were lying down partially on your right side with Ol' Eph after you!  The reason I have not used it in SASS matches is I could not quite convince the RO's that it was safe to draw that way, in spite of demonstrating it repeatedly!

The reason the Army persisted in using the right-side twist draw was for the same reason, even after they stopped using the saber except for ceremonial purposes, was accessibility with either hand. It wasn't until the semi-auto pistols were adopted that the holsters were made butt-rear.

i was aware of the change - i have a lot of vintage holsters going back to 1890s but i wasnt as up on the reasons as that , very interesting , thanks , i guess practice might be needed if i ever considered that style
