Calamity Kris
I was scanning through the news {I know, my first mistake} and was dragged into a dark place by the titles of a couple of articles. I didn't even have to read them to know they would repulse me. I'm stuck here in the office so I can't just take a walk on the beach. What do you do to climb out of this dark hole called the blues? Noz
I have a couple of cowboy friends on speed dial. That helps. Some desktop wall paper of cowboy guns you lust after. Pictures of places you'd like to be. I also like some of the T-shirt websites. Some of the shirts have good sayings. One that comes to mid is one that says: Sweat dries Blood clots Wounds heal and on the front it says: Suck it up Sister. Another that has apictureof a warthog that says: I have just one nerve left and you are getting on it.

Sedalia Dave
I have a collection of video clips and cartoon clips that I keep on my PC when I need cheering up. Some I have had for years. They are the ones that make me laugh every time I watch them. I have also found reading old "Dilbert" and "Pearls Before Swine" comics can improve almost any mood. Trailrider #896
"I cried because I had no shoes... Until I met a man who had no feet!" - Can't recall the author. If it is permitted to have music (with earphones, of course), play something lively. I have a couple of CD's with themes from favorite western movies. Also sound track from "Star Trek" and "Star Wars". Listen or read the most outrageous quotes from politicians! If that doesn't get your blood boiling and get you out of your blues, re-read some of the silliest posts on this forum. (Just don't spew all over your 'puter screen/keyboard.) Another piece of (useless???) advice: Stop reading or listening to news about things over which you have no control, or which are remote from you. I know that sounds like sticking your head in the sand, but it is better than getting yourself into a full-blown depression.

I didn't even have to read them to know they would repulse me. I'm stuck here in the office so I can't just take a walk on the beach. What do you do to climb out of this dark hole called the blues? Get up from the desk and take a short walk to a nearby window, and just look at the world around you. Enjoy a stare at the sky and watch a few planes go by, think about where you'd like to go if you could chose. Step outside into the parking lot and see which cars out there strike your fancy. Run down to the cafeteria and buy a bottle of OJ, or apple juice, and walk around a bit. Go find the best gossip in the office and chat about who just fell in love with who . . . Distraction helps, find something innocuous to distract yourself with, and stay away from the ugly on the net. warm regards, Shadow Catcher
Shawnee McGrutt
If I had an answer to your question I would be rich. I listen to music, but when I listen to the lyrics, they tend to be more depressed then I am. That should lift my spirits, that someone is more blue then I am. It doesn't. I like mowing the lawn when I am blue. I mow a lot of lawns.
Chantry
For me music helps a lot. It's difficult for me to remain angry or depressed after listening to Louis Armstrong sing "What a Wonderful World" for that matter it is hard to listen to any Louis Armstrong song and remain angry or depressed, he was just so inherently cheerful when he sang. Go for a walk, even light physical exercise will burn away some of the negative emotion

Blastmaster
A persons mind can only think of 'one' thing at a time. Occupy your mind with something more pleasant than what ever is bothering you. Since you are at the office,,,,,work. When you get home,,,,,work or play or converse with spouse/children/friend,,,,occupy your mind by an activity that utilizes your hands/body/mind,, walking, working, talking, surfing the net,,, whatever. By utilizing your hands/body, you have to use your mind to stay on task,,,, and it takes up more time.
Blackwater 53393
I go sing some blues of my own!! Then I burn the paper, cuss the computer, (screaming at the top of my lungs and sometimes frothing at the mouth) kick the livin' $#!T out of something that really needs it, growl and shake my head, and then go back to doing what I was doing before I got brought down. Back when I worked, I'd walk off and curse quietly or maybe shed a tear, and then I'd do my job and save the fit for later. There is always time to reflect and time to figure it out. There is also always something that needs the livin' $#!T kicked out of it!!
Calamity Kris
Those are some great ideas. I had never thought about getting away from my computer for a while and re-directing my thoughts. I will do my best to not read the news and start down this path to begin with. Thanks for the info. I am giving into my inner girl and have been doing some on-line browsing....... for furniture for the new house. I've gotten lots of ideas and dreams. I wish I had the budget to fulfill them. Bugs Bonney SASS # 10171
I suspect every person is different. I used to put that Dragon back in its cave every darn day. The VA put me on meds for depression and life is better and much less difficult. The only thing that worked for me was to visualize putting that dragon back in his cave. then I'd sit with my dog and tell myself that my mood is under my control and between petting the dog and telling myself it was up to me to determine my mood I managed to get through the day
Bama Red
Like Bugs, I too have had problems with "The Dragon." Don't want to say on an open forum what was the tipping point, but it was drastic. Tried medical help and found out that both the Doc and the med's were useless. Indeed some of the meds or med combos made things worse. Finally figured out that, like most of life, the solution was in my hands to do something and get better or do nothing and live, or not, with the consequences. SASS and the folks I've met here have been a very important part of my recovery. Thanks.
Badger Mountain Charlie SASS #43172
First of all, quit watching the "news". Their primary mission is to make you feel helpless. Besides, as I tell my news junkie wife, YOU CAN'T DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT ANYWAY. Then I unleash my incredible mind on things that make me HAPPY. Sometimes the SALOON does the trick, and sometimes it gets a bit morose too, so I switch to thing link going down into the man dungeon and fondling my fishing rods and reels, re-rigging my lines, and playing with my fishing lures. Then there is the virtual gun safe with all those virtual firearms. I don't think I have ever seen such beautimus fire arms. The owner must be pretty lucky to have them. By then, I am usually too happy to feel down. If I am still in the pot, I will go out into the garage and run the saw and drill press until I have completely destroyed the last project that I screwed up. If all else fails, have a brew and think about all the good times I had with my family and friends, while sitting in the garage looking out the big open door. A good rain makes it better. guitar_slinger
I rarely feel blue and am generally a happy cowboy. however those times I do, I grab one of my guitars or my banjo and start playing whatever music comes to mind. Great therapy. For those who do not play a musical instrument, do something that takes a lot of concentration where you can shut out the outside world. Works wonders. Grizzly Dave
I find something that interests me to think about instead. I research out things I'll never do, but still find interesting, could be anything. I plan my next trip to a cowboy match, even though it's unlikely I'll have the money to go. But most of all, I remember that God is ultimately in control, which is a good thing, because I sure as heck ain't!
