I'm headed to FT Benning in December.  Man, I haven't been there since 1997.  I spent three summers there for basic training, AIT, and airborne school.  It will be like returning to the scene of a crime.

56 years ago I was still crapping in a diaper.

Thank you for your service and sharing your experience.

Looking at the aerial for the camp. Looks like bulldozers cleared the perimeter and built the wall. While doing that wasn't there a high risk for enemy attacks?

Thanks

That’s why they call them “Combat” Engineers. ;)

But they are not hanging out there un protected. Before a firebase is put in, the infantry battalion will swoop down And secure the area. After any enemy resistance is suppressed, the headquarters, communications and artillery units will move in as the engineers push a perimeter berm up around the base. Then in a week or two, we do it all again.

so you want us to go to the metric clock system?  A day has 10 hours, an hour has 100 minutes, and a minute has 100 seconds.  French used it for awhile in 1793 :D

red g is right about that - more than one of us pondering that , 56 years ago seems like an eternity today , yet like yesterday in so many ways ,

\ive been here for 40 years , longer than ive ever been in any one place before , but 56 years ago i was starting a process of moving that put me in 14 different places in under 10 years , at one time i moved 7 times in three years , i got to thinking nothing would ever be permanent , i guess i proved that less than correct for now ,

Are those Garands or M14s?  Those PBR cans look like punch tops. They are collectors items now.

Well, lessee... Fifty five years ago, my bride and I had been married about 6-1/2 months, and I was spending my spare time riding around Montana in a set of green jeans, in a blue truck, making sure the Strategic Alert light on the launch officers' (capsule drivers, we maintenance types called 'em) panels stayed green.

Thanks to all of you who served!
