Making Fiber Wads For SG

I’m growing weary of the “out of stock” for ½ inch fiber wads for shot shell reloading.  I’ve been thinking of making my own (un-lubed) wads but I’m coming up empty on finding the fiber that’s used, anyone know what/where it can be found?  Also if anyone has done this at home any thoughts or recommendations?

I assume you’re loading BP. Are you loading brass or plastic hulls? If plastic, plastic wads work great for BP and smokeless.

I just checked again. In Stock. Scroll to the gauge you need.

As Abilene said I also use plastic wads for BP and smokeless. I used to use wads. But plastic wads work better. I use 11 gauge wads in my brass shot shells.

You are right.

I punched them out of 4 x 8 sheets of sound board. One sheet will provide plenty of wads.

Do you know the name or maker of the sound board?

I’m loading brass 12 gauge, so it uses 11 gauge wads and they’re out of stock.  That’s been the issue and the reason I’m thinking of making my own.

Seems like you could use Toilet Paper...

Wasp nests are historically accurate and environmentally friendly.

Any lumber yard should have sound board. They may call it fiber board.

A couple of FCGF and Frontiersman shooters I know use newspapers!!  Works well for them and I’ve used their rounds on occasion!  Worked well for me too!!

I didn't make fiber wads but used to make the top card wads for roll-crimped loads from an old deck of playing cards.

They worked very well as they were thin but stiff & were coated.

Just fill the hulls with enough powder, then nitro card, then shot !  More powder = More FUN (LOL)

I use Masonite siding board from Lowes. I have made a number of punches to cover all the calibers I shoot. After punching I lube them with a beeswax, Cisco, and vegetable oil mixture.

Tequila Shooter, I see CircleFly Wads says they are too busy supplying their distributors right now to sell to individuals, and to contact one of their retailers.  Have you tried all these?

Thanks Abilene, I just got a couple a 100, but I’m tired of hunting the websites every time I need some. So I thought if I make them myself I can have them anytime I need them.  What brought this up was when I was getting ready for Dark Days in January I needed some and again I had to hunt and was only able to get 1 package in time.

Just make sure they are from grass fed beef. The ones from grain fed beef are a little chunky

Please, there’s enough crap in the air already without vaporized cow crap being added. At least warn your fellow Posse members so they can stand well back.

Have you tried Dixie Gun Works ?

Creek it’s not that I can’t get them right now, it just bugs me that sometimes you can and sometimes you can’t get them, that’s why I figured if I could make them then I know I’ll have anytime I want.  Retirement has it’s benefits - time to try new things and see what works.
