TSA Compliant Drivers License

Recommended Posts

My and my wife's DL renew later this year. To get a renewal that's TSA compliant, we have to submit an original or certified duplicate of our birth certificate. No copies. Without a TSA compliant photo DL/ID, we can't board an airplane.

My wife arranged for a certified duplicate BC today. In order to get one, she has to send a copy of her old DL. In other words, you can't get a new DL without a birth certificate, but getting a birth certificate isn't possible without a copy of the old DL, which the TSA doesn't recognize.

I guess there's no other practical way to do it. It just reminds me that irony is alive and well!

Here is the issue I have with this new TSA license compliant.

When I got my learners permit and again when I got my first driver's license, I had to show my birth certificate.

SO TSA doe snot accept my original birth certificate license.

Same thing for  me...Needed new birth certificate and my SS card...Which I have misplaced...They did not like DD214, not good enough...W2 or W4...The problem here is they now put last 4 of SSN only...Had to find old ones with full number or in my case some SS paperwork with SSN and address...He was happy...Like everyone here in this  state we gave them all those papers so long ago...It was all good then....

I got my TSA compliant driver's license and had to jump through the same hoops as Abilene Slim.  Only they wouldn't accept my Social Security (SS) card that I got when I was 15 years old.  Why?  Because on those early SS cards there was written on the card "Not for Identification."  I had to get an old tax return that had my SS number on it.  The Arizona Department of Transportation accepted that.

Imagine if we had to do that to vote!!!

I still have mine and was told the same thing. Regardless, they'd probably have rejected it because my 15-year-old signature doesn't match my present day sig. I'm not sure I could forge that old signature now. ^_^

They do accept a Passport and current Military ID. I checked out their website and there are a lot of other IDs they accept.

They also listed the states that are not in compliance. Colorado (my state) was not listed, so I assume that we are compliant. I take that to mean I don't need a BC when I renew later this year.

No problem with my CO license when we flew in October.

They probably won't accept new Colorado drivers licenses...because they will need an electron microscope to read the print on the new ones.  My wife renewed last year, and even with strong reading glasses I can barely read the data.  I don't renew until next year...  Not sure what happens when we fly out of DIA to an airport in a compliant state.  Does that mean we are going to be "illegal inter-state aliens"? Gonna be interesting!

I got the “Real ID” when I got my California driver’s license again...for the 4th time. Sounds weird saying that...Anyway, I showed my birth certificate and my Social Security card and proof of address (letter from my new employer) and I was good to go.

If you don’t want to get the “Real ID” or TSA license (whatever it’s called) you can use a passport along with your regular license to fly.

The need for for the new ID or passport doesn’t go into effect until October 2020 for all states. Some states got extensions. The original date was January 2018. This became a law in 2005.

Here is some light reading that explains a lot of this.

Big Sage,  Arizona DOT didn't accept my Military ID except for proof that I'm a veteran.  No Social Security number on it.

UB, I understand the need goes into effect nationwide in 2020, and you'll need it by then.

Most of this started when several states started knowingly issuing driver's licenses to illegal aliens.  North Carolina was one of them.  The illegal alien would then come to Georgia, present the North Carolina driver's license and get a Georgia license.  This was happening all over the country.

What I stated came off the TSA web site and it listed military ID as acceptable.

I learned the name on your birth certificate has to completely match your social security card. I'm a "Jr", however my birth certificate does not say so, even though my fathers name is the same as mine on the certificate. Was told that I'd have to legally change my name. Checked with the court and found out it was a $200 process, would require several court appearances and a $50 ad in my local newspaper. My passport (which states Jr) had expired, so I renewed it for $125. Then got my real ID. The WV DMV is a real PIA, but no illegals will ever get a real ID through them. A passport is a good document to have.

Over a million in California.

So... the other twenty-five million of us get to jump through this hoop to accommodate them.

So here we are - having to essentially use a passport for interstate air travel.

Golly gee...  silly.gif

You'll need the 'real' ID to buy a gun also.

The old DL will not do after 2020.

Ima and I just went trough this crap at the DMV. What a cluster and we had appointments-Still took us over 3 hrs to get-er-done.

Renewed my ugly license in August. They will accept them. We flew in October. Even got TSA pre check clearance.

I have a birth certificate issued by the hospital I was born in.  Even has my right foot print on it.  Not signed by a government entity so it unacceptable.

Went on line and ordered a birth certicate from the county..  Surprisly three days later it arrived in the mail.  My dad's name is "Loyal". and my mom's middle name is "Anne".  County issued BC had my dad's name as "Lowell" and mom's name as "Ann".   Scanned my hospital BC, emailed it to the County after calling them.  They sent me a corrected BC.

So my hospital BC is not acceptable to the Feds but can be use to correct. Government BC that will be acceptable.

Walked into the BMV, had the correct documentation, paid the fee and within a week my Federal blessed "Real" DL arrived in the mail.

Now I'm working on getting our first US Passports.  Going to see our daughter and son-in-law!!!!!!!!!!

That will change  Oct. 1  2020.

No 'real' ID or Passport-no boarding pass for commercial flights.

A couple of years back, I lost my wallet in Chicago. Flying back to Houston, I had no ID except for the TWIC card around my neck.

TSA said they couldn't accept it, I argued that it was Government issued and has TSA approved on the back. The TSA agent said, "OH, OK.!"

TSA...The best agents the gub'ment can buy for 7 dollars an hour.

I'm glad I read this thread.  I had no idea this was coming and I have people in other states that are far enough away that flying is the best way to get there.
