Calamity Kris
I will be attending a women's self defense class taught by Kathy Jackson in the near future. I have been looking to purchase a home defense/CC gun for a couple of months now. I have been to {Insert Name Of Large Sporting Goods Chain} 3 times. All three times I have been "assisted" by different male employees at the gun counter. All 3 times they worked really hard at telling me why I don't want to buy the gun I'm interested in and why I should buy the one they want to sell me. EACH OF THEM TRIES TO SELL ME A DIFFERENT GUN!! The guy today tried to sell me a Khar or a CZ. He wouldn't even show me the M&P and worked hard at talking me out of the Ruger. The guy from my last visit tried to sell me a Springfield or a Walther. What part of "I want a Ruger or an M&P" am I not making clear here? The class is coming up soon and I need to buy a gun for the class!!! {I don't think my cowboy guns would work really well.} Ladies, how do you get men to listen to you??? Men, any tips you can give me on dealing with these yahoos would be greatly appreciated. No I don't want to take Uno with me just to get these clowns to listen. They need to listen to ME. {Rant off.}

Cliff Hanger #3720LR
Kris, First encounter. Tell the sales clerk you want to see "This and that!" If they don't show you want you want, ask again saying. "that is not what I came here to look at. Please show me this and that!" If still being pushed towards something different, "I'm sorry, you don't seem to be hearing me. I would like to speak with another Sale person." If they refuse, "I'm sorry, please get me a manager!" If they refuse, find the manage by going to the check out person. Explain that you have asked the sales person to see, this and that, twice and the sale person has not oblige me. If this doesn't help, as for a company Main office business card. Say thank you and let them know you will be calling the main office to find out why, this store will not show you what you asked to see. At this point listen for reasons and most of all personal help and possible discounts for the problems you encountered. If still not getting what you want then it is time to shop else where. Be polite at all times and stand your ground. After you see the guns you want, then you could if you want let the sale person compare your choices with their recommendations. You are still the customer.
Subdeacon Joe
Do they have the firearm you desire in stock? If they don't, then that is the answer to your question. Even if it isn't in stock they can likely get it from a distributor in a few days. Kris, you gotta be firm. "Look, sonny, I've been shootin' for longer than you've been alive. I've done my research. I've tried out lots of hand guns, I know what fits my hand and what I like. Now, do I get what I want? Or do I have a talk with your supervisor, and send a follow up letter to corporate telling them why you cost them a sale?"

Cypress Sun
"Big chain store" obviously wants your money, not your continued patronage. You'll have to visit another store....probably better prices anyway. FWIW.........you'll like the M&P.
DocWard
I think Cliff Hanger pretty much hit it on the head. Another option is to look for a smaller local gun store. Do a web search and find ones near you, and go to their websites and see if they appear to be "female friendly." Some may say as much on their sites. I'm lucky here in that my favorite LGS is owned by an incredibly nice, knowledgeable lady.
Warden Callaway
If it helps, it's not q gender thing. It's just stupidity. We went to a dozen local gunships looking for single action "cowboy" guns. All they had was conceal carry and tactical. They didn't even want to look and see if they could order specific guns we were interested in. One shop I'd done business with for 30 years pulled out a Rugar 45/22. "Here. This is what you need. " We ended up buying 4 Cattleman through Gunbroker.

PPS: Guys can get the same treatment if they are perceived as a NooB or Insufficiently Tactical. I've always found loudly saying "Well, if you don't Want my business..." usually gets the attention of the store mismanager. Tom Bullweed
A couple of thoughts: Ladies are the fastest growing portion of gun buyers in the US and have been for several years. Some shop in your area is doing a good job of selling guns to ladies. I always get better service in a stand-alone shop, rather than a big-box train-wreck. Those big-box stores push Brand X gun today, and likely push Brand Y tomorrow, based on some direction from accounting. Poor service is giving to both genders. I had to report a very stupid salesjerk at a big-box store to his manager when this fella repeated pointed a 1911 that he picked up out of the case and at several customers, including me. I naively asked the manager if shooting a person pointing a gun at me would be justified as a reasonable threat.

Grizzly Dave
Kris, I am so sorry that you have been treated badly. I think Cliffhanger covered things pretty well, but as you've already been there several times, I would modify it slightly.... If you can't find another store to go to, call that store and arrange a meeting with the general manager, don't explain everything on the phone, just that you feel you have been treated poorly by several members of his sales staff and would like to give him a chance to earn your business before you go else where and also file a complaint with corporate. It might help to explain that you have been a competition shooter for many years, but don't tell them cowboy unless they ask. If the manager is an ass, file that complaint with corporate. I wish you good luck. Grizz
Diamond S Doug
Ask him if he is paid a commission if yes then ask again to see the pistol you want. Warden Callaway
Mary only rarely runs into these kinds of problems and it's resolved pretty quick when she does. She is definitely a member of the "head cow" club. She has a lot of business experience and negotiates well. Last fall I talked to a guy that wanted to sale a Marlin 1894 Competition. I got my questions answered and decided I wanted the gun. I turned to Mary and said "buy it ". She stood there with cash in hand and talked him down $150. Most of those kind of "know it all" guys will back down when confronted with a self-assertive woman. You go girl!!! When I was working at a gun shop/range I always let the lady pick out what she wanted and then told her my thoughts on it. If it had a lot of recoil, less powerful than is desirable etc. and let them make up their mind. Working at a gun shop that had a range I was also able to let them shoot a few different guns before making their choice. I found women customers to be much more of a joy to wait on than the proverbial "Know it all" guy customer! Hope this is some help. Good luck! Calamity Kris
OMG!! I just got off the phone with XXXXXXXX. The store manager shoved me off to the gun dept. manager. Even the gun dept manager did his best to sell me a Sig. “I’m a former cop so I would have this if my life depended on it……..” {They don’t have any Shields.} I told him guns are kind of like cars. Everyone has one they really like, rational thought process or not. I really wanted the M&P or Ruger. He gave me a curt “yes maam” and shut up. It didn’t sound like they were going to give me any breaks on price either. I think I’ll shop Gun Genie. Anything has to be better than this mess. Stubborn Dutchman, SASS # 61363
Well, my grandfather once said, that when faced with a stubborm mule, you first crack him squarely between the eyes with a 2x4 to get his attention. Then again every 3 minutes to keep his attention. CK, ... If those idiots don't want to sell you the gun you want, find another store that will deal with you. If the other store doesn't have what you want, tell them you saw one at XYZ store but couldn't get anyone to wait on you. A lot of times stores will sell other stores guns at cost, especially if they aren't moving. Just a thought. Good luck.
