Clay Mosby
A couple months ago we replaced our flag with a new Annin Tough-Tex outdoor flag. Our flag is lit so it's out almost 24/7 and we wanted their toughest outdoor product. This morning while going out to put out the trash barrels I glanced at the flag and noticed this! At first I thought it was a tear, and was disappointed that the flag was failing so quickly. Then I looked closer and realized that someone had help a flame to it in an attempt to burn it down!! This flag is attached to our house with one of those 45 degree poles, and there is a chance it could have ignated the trim around the garage door!! It's a good thing I didn't catch the bastard in the act, I probably would have hurt myself trying to hurt them. Lesson learned, i'm researching flag poles now. I already sent an email to Annin thanking them for a well made product. As far as I can tell the flame went out as soon as the ignition was removed. Sedalia Dave
When buying home flag poles be sure to inquire about wind rating. Most cannot withstand more than a 10 mph wind with the flag raised and are not much better without the flag.

The Original Lumpy Gritz
That is arson-make the report. Might want to put a camera on the flag, so you can see the POS neighbor try it again. Happy hunting OLG

Clay Mosby
I sent an email to the Sheriffs Dept with photos. I'd thought about surveillance cameras before as our neighborhood isn't like it was when we moved here 20 years ago, Might have to consider them again. There is a young man on our block that has some serious mental issues. Our next door neighbor also flies a flag, and she told me that last year this man had ripped the entire pole and flag assembly down and tried to burn it. His mother replaced everything, but I don't know if anything else was done. When Mom finally passes on, we are going to start looking for a saner state and place to live!! Good advice about wind rating Sedalia Dave, hadn't considered there might be wind-free flag poles out there!!

If you don't have a bunch of druggies, kleptos or pyros living within a few blocks I can guarantee that there will be folks like that passing though on occasion. Every week on the way to work I see at least one transient making his way through town, and I always hope that he doesn't wander into my neighborhood during the day. The idyllic, crime-free neighborhoods and towns we saw in Leave It to Beaver, The Waltons and Peyton Place were all fictional.

Clay Mosby
Did some research on line and found a kit offered by an American owned company called Old Glory Flag. The pole is rated at 70MPH and we ordered the 20' telescoping version. It also has a solar powered light option for night time display. The kit comes with a flag, but we will continue to get our flags from Annin. Thanks for the input folks.

J.D. Daily
I suggest you contact the Flag Store in Sparks NV for pole recommendations. We get very stout winds here in northern NV. Tell them you want a pole rated for Washoe Valley. Next to Mt WA Washoe Valley has the highest sustained & wind gusts in the continental US. Big rigs & RV's get blown over when only the "Not Advised" message is displayed on hwy. 580. The wind velocities at valley floor level are too high for all wind turbines except for the darius type (egg beater).

Same thing-people who want to tell you how to live and what to do on/with your property. My son loves them. He pays them too much money and they use it to maintain the tract where he lives. He doesn't see that they won't let him do anything that needs done without their approval: painting, security screens, plants in his yard, etc. He has two parking spaces, one in his two and a half car wide driveway and one around the corner. The family has three cars so they charge him extra for the use of one a block away by the swimming pool (another amenity that he has to pay for but never uses.) instead of having two in the drive. I'll burn my house to the ground before I'll let an HOA charge me to tell me what I can't do. The township is bad enough and they are generally not at all intrusive. I would rather live in the country, more or less like I do now, and deal with the septic and well than ever deal with an HOA. I am close enough to the city that we have natural gas. The one investment I would like to make is an emergency generator so we continue having water when the power goes out.

Sixgun Sheridan
It's both funny and pathetic at the same time how everybody has the same complaint with HOAs. They're always made up of fellow residents with a real Stalin complex, who only get on the board so they can throw their weight around and tell their neighbors what to do. I've dealt with several HOAs over the years, and it's always been an issue trying to reason with what amount to a bunch of little dictators. Ramblin Gambler
We have an HOA, but it's voluntary. So I didn't volunteer. But I still go the meetings to keep tabs on them and I help out with the projects when I can. One year they tried to change the deed so the HOA wasn't voluntary anymore and we had to fight them over that. My mom loves HOAs. She lives in the same neighborhood as my sister. One year my mom decided she wanted to run for the board, and my sister had to run too to keep her in check. If mom had her way, there'd be no firecrackers after sunset when decent people should be asleep.

Yeah, the greater Phoenix area tilts the numbers a lot, but they're 90miles south of here. We're pretty safe up here where about 1 out of every 3 people carry a gun. Biggest unsafe problem here is drivers who aren't paying attention to driving.
