Who else is NOT having turkey?

There’s only 4 of us so the ex-wife is making chicken, mashed potatoes, corn and pumpkin pie. Me, my two sons and their mom. Always a fun time!

We're having my gal's 93 year old mom over for turkey and the fixins. Small, 12 lb turkey and only the three of us but it's really the only time of the year that we have turkey.

I read somewhere that 31% (mol) of people don't like turkey and have something else for TG or Christmas.

Happy Thanksgiving Rye and everyone else in The Saloon.

Brined, spatchcocked chicken on a bed of small potatoes, onions, carrots, and celery.  Also, a homemade Orange Cranberry Sauce.  Walmart pumpkin pie ($2.50 on the reduced price shelf).

Chicken will be seasoned after this receipt:

Spicy Garlic-Butter Wings

Ingredients

12 chicken wings, separated into flats (wing tips removed) and drumettes

Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper

2 tablespoons all-purpose flour

1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper

1/2 teaspoon garlic powder

1/2 teaspoon onion powder

4 tablespoons (1/2 stick) unsalted butter

6 cloves garlic, grated

Directions

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. Line a baking sheet with parchment and set aside. Arrange the wings on a paper towel-lined sheet pan and pat them dry with a paper towel. Season with salt and pepper. Transfer the wings to a large bowl.

In a small bowl, mix the flour, 1 teaspoon salt, cayenne, garlic powder, onion powder and 1/4 teaspoon black pepper. Add the seasoning to the wings and toss thoroughly to fully coat each wing. Place the wings in a single layer on the prepared baking sheet. Bake until golden brown and cooked through, 40 to 45 minutes.

Meanwhile, in a small saucepan over low heat, melt the butter with the grated garlic and salt to taste, stirring occasionally. Transfer the wings to a clean large bowl, drizzle with the garlic butter, season with salt and pepper and toss to coat. Return to the baking sheet and bake until nicely browned and a bit crispy, an additional 5 to 7 minutes. Transfer to a platter and season with salt and pepper. Serve immediately.

Obviously a few modifications since it's a whole chicken (minus backbone) rather than wings.

I was never a turkey fan, although I'll eat it, and 30+ years of badly cooked Thanksgiving meals by relatives has not increased my appreciation of a standard Thanksgiving dinner.

My mother will come over and I will stir fry some sweet & sour chicken with white rice.  I'll make enough that my mother can take some home as well.

Eating at a good friend's home.  No turkey, no pumpkin anydangthing (I'm not very fond of turkey and detest pumpkins).  Steak, smashed spuds, probably corn...whatever.

Have a great day.

Slight modification: about once a year I get a craving for a hot open faced turkey sandwich on home style white bread with peppered gravy and a side of sweet corn smothered in butter and slightly over-cooked.

I actually love turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, gravy, pumpkin pie but I'm not cooking so whatever is fine with me! I am bringing a store bought carrot cake.

Happy Thanksgiving to ya'll!!!

My bride is cooking an 11.25 lb turkey in her new wall oven.
She is celebrating having a working kitchen after so many years.

I divorced my ex 50 years ago, and she won't be attending.
The reasons for the divorce have not changed over the last 50 years.
Kudos to those who can share a meal with the ex and adult children.

We are eating dinner by ourselves tonight.
Not for lack of invitation, but that I am now on Day #7 of this nasty head cold that is going around.

That looks like it will be great but far out of my budget

I dearly love turkey. I could eat roasted or smoked turkey weekly.

We are having a traditional Thanksgiving. Turkey, mashed potatoes & gravy, green bean casserole, corn & Italian bread.

Deserts are pies - pumpkin, apple and blueberry as well as mini pecan pie type thingies. My Mom called them “Tassies”.

I am smoking the 14# turkey. It’ll take about 7 hours. Here it is at 2 hours before I added more water to the pan then flipped it over and added more butter.

Mom was a cook at school for many years. But in truth she wasn't a very good cook. Cooked the hollady turkey to death. More like a cremation. The stuffing was half black pepper.  It wasn't until I got into Mary's family that I knew what good home cooking was. Granny Green held a black belt in cooking.  Their farm had milk cows and every other farm animal.  Gardens and truck patches.  Everything made from scratch.

Granny Green past away way too soon. Mom got old and heath problems.  So Mary picked up the big spoon and made the family dinner.  Moist turkey. Big spread.  Falks came down to eat. Dad had one quirk, he didn't say anything more than necessary while eating.  Anyway,  they eat like starved field hands.  No complaints.  The next week mom calls down and tells us not to fix dinner. To come up and eat.  She had baked a turkey because "Dad likes his stuffing cooking inside the bird."

We picked up a pre cooked half a turkey yesterday from Hannaford. They do an excellent job with it as with their rotisserie chicken. Mashed potatoes, stuffing with sausage, and mashed butternut squash. Maybe some lima beans!! Then apple pie with ice cream.

There's going to be 11 at our meal. We are having turkey, but also having smoked brisket (imported from Iowa) and ham.

A few good sides and pumpkin, cherry, and Dutch apple pie.

Happy Thanksgiving,

BS

I only have one taser on my turkey. They work great. It is at 90 degrees out of the 180 it needs to be. Been on about an 1 1/2 hr so far.

That looks fantastic. Nice job on that prime rib.
I pretty much have chicken, turkey, steaks and pork dialed in on my smoker. My next tasty test will be a cheap beef roast. If I screw it up the cost won’t be a big deal. I’ll work my way up to Prime Rib. ;)
