Hoss
There is a Dicks Sporting Goods store opening near me (in Coprus Christi Tx) next week. I don't think I've ever bee in one. Are they pretty much the same as Academy Sports?
Blackwater 53393
Kinda' sorta. They're the ones who pulled the ARs off the shelves last spring.
Texas Jim Henry, SASS #20616
You can somtimes get some good prices on shotgun ammo with them. The big negative (for me) is that they caved to pressure and decided to quit carrying AR-style rifles after the Sandy Hook shooting. Don't know if they have gone back and revisited that decision. Maybe someone here on the Wire can give us an update. Regards, TJH
Grizzly Dave
I imagine that local Dick's will stock what sells best in that market. Around me, that's general fitness and outdoor sports stuff, and not guns and hunting. So for me, I don't have much use for it. YMMV.
Buffalo Dick, SASS #12880
The ones around here frequently have sales on Remington Gun Club shells, my favorite CAS factory shotshell.
Goody, SASS #26190
First time I went in one here at Northpark Center, I was all set to buy a couple of cases of Remington STS that they had on their Grand Opening sale for a somewhat good price. I then noticed that they were boxes of 20 each, not 25, making it a not so good deal as the quantity went down by 20%. Haven't been back in 6 years. Edward R S Canby, SASS#59971
The ones around here frequently have sales on Remington Gun Club shells, my favorite CAS factory shotshell. We have a new one that just opened locally. With their Grand Opening coupon and sale price on Remington Gun Clubs one could buy them at below the cost of reloading. Of course they are sold out. I'll try again today and then give up if I don't score a few cases. Mostly they sell sporting goods for team sports and golfing equipment. Update: I got my Gun Clubs for $3.50 a box. They were boxes of 25. No complaints from me!

Mustang Gregg
:FlagAm: +1 on>> They ain't called Dick's for nothing. I'm still doing a slow burn over the time that Dick's (Denver) priced me Win 28 ga shells with NO LIMIT at $6.98 a box. When I got to the store I re-asked if their quoted price was correct. So I loaded up a cartfull and went to the ammo/guns counter. The same guy sent me to the front saying that I had too much in the cart for him to handle. When I went to the front checkout, they said that 28 ga ammo was NOT ON SALE! I told them that they could stuff their ammo. I have not darkened their door again. Tionesta Toby, SASS #74169
They opened a separate store here in the Pittsburgh area called Field and Stream which handles their gun- and outdoor sports-related gear: firearms, clothing, ammo, archery stuff, etc. They do sell ARs, BTW. They sell their other sporting goods (football, baseball, soccer, etc.) nearby in their DIck's Sporting Goods store.
Chantry
You can sometimes find good deals on ammo, especially shotgun shells. The firearm selection is limited. Yes, the Dick's in CT removed the AR-15's from their stores, but I really don't think they had much of a choice. A boycott by non-gunowners likely would have resulted in a lot of stores being closed and their employees left without jobs. I strongly doubt that firearms & related sales are a major source of profit for them.

The two or three times that antis threatened a boycott around here, the general public and the pro-gun owner factions turned out in far greater numbers to support the threatened business. Maybe it's a regional thing. I can't say. I do know that the Dick's in this area has suffered because of response to the removel of certain firearms and related products. Key Hay
They don't carry a big variety of anything. Just a little of all sports equipment. To me their the 7-11 of sporting goods. All they need now is the microwave burritos.
Cat Brules
I live on the central coast of california, almost exactly between LA and SF. Anhyway, there's a Dick's up in San Luis Obispo and a Big-5 Sporting Goods in Pismo Beach. Truth is, I've heard so much bad about Dick's that I've never gone into the place. Big 5 has non-discript guys handling the weapons and ammo department who know their stuff, which I found very surprising and refreshing. You can usually find what you need there in the way of ammo and mid- to lower range long guns. No handguns. I gotta go up there to SLO, so maybe I'll check out Dick's, if for no other reason than to compare them. Sidetracking this a bit: WalMart does not sell firearms here and basically their stock of ammo is pretty much non existent here. Never any .22 of any configuration, never any handgun ammo, some limited rifle calibers, and they're not receiving shipments of it, either. They have begun to stock more shotgun ammo. Some .410 and more 12 gauge and 20 gauge. Problem is that much of it is what they consider premium ammo and sells for $9 - $15 a box. Interestingly, they are stocking the higher powered, Gold Medal," "paper target load" shells (waxed paper hull, not plastic) at $9/box. They are hi-base brass, 2 3/4 dr., 1 1/2 oz, #7 1/2 and #8 shot. They always have those now. Wish I could get those in #6 or #4 shot. They still have limited sales to 3 boxes of ammo per day per customer.
Judge Dread
Long before sandy hook (about 2 years prior) I went to a Dick's to purchase a Savage Bolt Action .22 which I had heard was a REAL tackdriver. Walked in saw the gun, good deal started buying then the paperwork started coming out. Not just a 4473 but several NCR pieces of paper that I not only had to sign but also fill out with personal information including the number of children living at my home!??? I spoke to the manager and stated I don't need to fill any of this out, all I need to fill out was the 4473. Manager stated no that's the company rules and I stated well the company can keep their gun and all their sales as far as I am concerned. I proceeded to tear up all the paperwork that had been filled out including the 4473 into multiple pieces and left it there on the counter and walked out. They were asking stuff that was none of their business, I could have easily stated NONE since it was not a legal document but it was the principal of the matter... :-(
St. Louis Suomi SASS #31905
Howdy: When they bought the Galyans store the first thing they did was pull all of the handguns out. They wanted to only sell $1,000 plus shotgun and $2,000 RIfles. Handguns weren't "family" guns (they said). So, they are nothing but a cmaping outfitters store (if you want over priced yuppy camp goods), T-shirts and gym shoes. I have written them off a long time ago. Same for Sportd Authority around here - gym shorts and T-shirts. STL Suomi

Waxahachie Kid #17017 L
We have one about ten miles from here. Before Sandy Hook happened they sold out of AR's, and several folks plunked down their hard earned cash and supposedly Dick's ordered them. After the feeding frenzy started, and the AR's went up sky high in price, they decided to refund the money (about $900) and bowed to the politically correct socialists party and they stopped carrying them. So now the folks that had bought one did not have enough money to buy one at the newly inflated greed-price of $1,800+ dollars. Dick's should have honored their word, and sold the rifles to those folks that had ordered and paid for them. The one here mostly carries sporting clothing, and baseball/football/soccer stuff. They didn't do the right thing, and they didn't keep their word. I won't have anything to do with them. I will go to Bass Pro, or Cabelas, or Gander Mountain, or a local gun shop, or rearrange my sock drawer, before I will go into that place again. Slowhand Bob, 24229
My memory has gotten all weird and confused in my old age, but my memory runs different. I remember it as Dicks not wait until the pot got hot, heck I didnt think they even waited to see if the fire would be lit! As for their fearing public pressure in the pocket book, think I will always go with the 99% who put 'me' ahead of 'their pocket book' for my future shopping. At the time we considered it a 'feel good' PR move on Dicks part and I remember so many SASSers declaring that they would never again darken the doors of Dicks again BUT THEN memory doesnt last long amongst a bunch of long in the tooth old guys. Put a box of shot shells on sale and most of the gun crowd will stumble all over themselves getting to your door.

Driftwood Johnson, SASS #38283
Howdy Around here Dick's used to have good prices on cases of shotgun shells. Lately though, the case price has been the same as the single box price. $6.99 per box for Gun Clubs or Rios, $69.90 per case. I have not seen them discount cases in a year or so. I stop in every once in a while to check.
Branchwater Jack SASS #88854
Round here is one of the biggest Dick's I have ever seen. It is just down the road from Academy. Pulp, SASS#28319
Cain't really speak for anywhere else, but the Academy at OKC has a LOT more firearms stuff than the Dick's. And better prices.
