Finally getting around to my intro.....

Howdy

I live in Rockford IL, just turned 61, grew up watching all the great westerns and shooting my "Pop guns" and my green handled cap gun revolvers.

I have been shooting USPSA for many years, classified in all 9 divisions and helped start an ICORE league and am classified in all 4 divisions. I am a range Officer in both.

My love for revolvers led me to customizing S&Ws for ICORE members and when I get beat, it is usually by someone with a gun I worked on.

The road led me to Single Action revolvers, first a custom Blackhawk by Andy Horvath, then came a few SAA Clones and most recently a 1981 Colt SAA.

I bought a Winchester 1966 from a member on another forum and a Stoeger Coach gun at a local gun auction.

I reload all my own ammo, including Cowboy Special, but I do not currently reload for shotguns. Infact, I know very little about them. I think I have only shot shotgun shells once in my life. I bought 2 adapters and shoot 45 Colt out of my shotgun currently at my local indoor range.

I sent turkey legs a message today and hope to start shooting in Beloit Wis in April.

I have a holster rig/complete setup being built by Mernickle

I have a couple jogging strollers so I should be able to build a cart this winter as wood working is another hobby, as is making 1911 grips and I just starting making SAA Grips.

I will join SASS as soon I come up with a name. Maybe just go with Duke Soprano?

My family came from Apple River IL, Maybe Apple River Duke?

Apple River Ranger?

Welp, looking forward to meeting some of you I hope,

Regards,

Jeffrey "Duke"

Wecome from Texas.  I shot the Wisconsin State match at Beloit last year and had a Great time.  That is a nice club, you will enjoy shooting there.

Reloading shotgun shells is only essential if you want to shoot black powder.  There are adequate commercial smokeless loads available.  Locally, only about half our CAS shooters reload shotgun shells.  The Wire will suggest ammo if you are interested.  Your USPSA shooting will serve you well.  You already know the incredible importance of the front sight.

Welcome!  Hope to shoot with you some day!  Turkey Legs is a great shooter and you will have fun if you are on her posse.  April will seem like it takes years to get here as you impatiently wait for the weather to break so you can shoot again.  I know, I am formerly from upstate NY (we still have a house there) and you only shoot from April to early Nov if you are lucky.  At least you have some woodworking projects to work on while you wait.  Best of luck.

Thank you for the warm welcome, Lew, I am sure I will be asking for advice!

As for my savings account, its been gone long ago, USPSA ate it big time but I just sold 2 top end open guns in 38 SUper comp and a 1911 in 38 Super, probably about 20 more guns to sell as I am just burned out on USPSA, even though I am shooting a Classifier match this Saturday night. I do not get much downtime in the winter, our ICORE matches are here at our indoor range, same with USPSA. I shoot outdoor in Polo IL and Lodi Wis.

Do not get me wrong, I think USPSA has a lot of good qualities but I am just tired of the drama and who can run the fastest, even though they shoot all C zone hits, the guy who is a bit slower, shooting all A zone hits gets beat bad.

And my best friend, who was my USPSA squadmate and my next door neighbor for the last 4 years, passed away in June. It is taking a huge toll on me, we were always going to matches together and of course the mandatory breakfast afterwards.

Anyway, thats me in a nutshell

Oh and for my first question, what ammo should I be buying for my shotgun?

And what is your return on investment? 😄

Winchester Low Noise Low Recoil is the most preferred cowboy load. Although other brands offer “low recoil” loads and people have luck with them.

Welcome!  I hope I will see you in the spring!  I rarely miss a shoot at Rock River Regulators! I love the range and the people.  As Lew mentioned, we are very lucky to have multiple clubs in this area and can shoot practically every weekend within an hour's drive if we want to!

Winchester LNLR AAs often show up at Wal*Mart.  When they do local CAS shooters empty the shelves.  These shells are the only smokeless shotgun shells my wife will shoot.

wecome to the group ,

my alias was selected by friends sitting around my campfire in my back lawn overlooking the watab river , ive since regretted the "kid" part but back then as the eldest of that group of cowboy friends they thought it humorous , that group was everything from a buckaroo to a couple younger 49ers [thats what i was then] we were all just getting started and picking our aliases together my advice is choose wisely - you live with it a long time , ive got 20 years in with mine now ,

Just be aware that whatever you choose for your alias is what you will be known as going forward. Most of us don't even know the peoples real names. Just the alias. Mine is Texas Maverick and everyone calls me Maverick. So choose wisely grasshopper. LOL I don't think you want everyone calling you Apple. LOL

Welcome to the fire!

How about Illinois Apple?

Red Apple? Duke Appleseed?

Above are examples of what happens when you are running on two hours sleep! As has been said take some time, pick an alias that makes you happy (you will have it a long long long time):D and have your self a good time!

Welcome.  Have you tried the Alias generator on the SASS website?  https://sassnet.com/about-sass/choosing-a-sass-alias

Just pick one that's not too confusing.  "Shooter B. Reddy" didn't work out so well.

There's also the "Free Alias" thread on this forum.

Thank you all,

I did join and now have an official number 😁

Still no Alias but I am leaning towards Duke Soprano, that has been my alias on countless gun forums for over 10 years.

My wife, even though she doesn't currently shoot, also wanted to join so I added her to the membership. I really think she just wants an excuse to dress up and buy more clothes!

That’s a great way to get your wife involved!!  They start out dressing up and find out that that’s only half the fun!  If she spends any time around Turkey Leggs, you’ll be buying her guns and a rig before you know it!!

As to the alias, I have been call dishwater, pond water, swamp water, springwater, and a few more that I don’t remember!

Come for the shootin’! Stay for the people!

It’s the most fun you can have with your clothes on!!

I agree, in all my years of USPSA, ICORE and Defensive pistol,

1. I have never won any money

2. I dont remember what place I ever came in.

3. All I remember is hanging out with new friends, great conversations, food and of course a lot of RIBBING when someone does happen to have a brain fart.

DId I mention my DQ with 60 shooters watching when I shot the ceiling at my indoor club? Of course my neighbor, best buddy squadmate was the Range Officer at the time
