New Retail Ammo Prices

Recommended Posts

Lately I've been dropping by Bass now and then, and they have not had revolver ammo; though most semi-auto and rifle calibers have been plentiful.

This time a couple of days ago, for the first time since the shortage there was a shelf full of .38 special; 50 or more boxes. Nice green Remington boxes in full supply.

The price: $32.99 per box. At least a 50% increase from two years back.

The new normal.

Look at inflation, the market, and the value of your dollars today.  After the math, probably not that different.

My LGS has a 1# jug of Accurate 5744... at $60.
A month back, he offered the same jug at $45 (same as the online price), so I bought it.
No shipping, no hazmat.

$60 is too rich... don't need it that bad.
Still waiting for S.W. Buffalo Rifle (same powder) to come back into stock.

About the same increase on diesel, gasoline, meat and a hundred other things.  Grrrr.

If you are going to buy ammo or gunpowder in Canada, bring two credit cards because you will max out the first one.

Up until lately my ammo room had more than most stores :) (HI my little Alphabet boy )  Thats not saying much. Serious question though in Canada are you limited on purchases of ammo or restricted in anyway , just curious . dont know if its like some states here .

At a gun show last week a couple guys had quite a bit of American Eagle.38 spl for $35.00 a box. First .38 I’ve seen in awhile .

I reload .38’s for less than $10.00 a box with the new primer prices figured in.

I kind of chuckle at threads like this.
Some of you would hit the roof if you saw what the prices are here in Granola Land.

Of course, there’s a lot of price gouging here.

I was at Sportsman's Warehouse in Prescott today. I bought a box of Remington Gun Club 12 gauge for $10. That's up a little from three years ago. I bought a box of American-made .223 HPBT for coyote hunting for $20. That's $10 less than I paid 25 years ago! They have powder behind the counter; all stuff I don't use. They occasionally get primers in and while I have not been lucky lately, some of my friends have been. SW has been selling them for less than $50 per 1K! And they now have enough ammo on the shelves that they separated the shotgun ammo from the rest, just like it used to be. No, they don't have cases of AAs stacked ten high, but it is slowly getting better. As the gap fills, the backlog will catch up. So, no, I won't be paying $100 for an unknown brand primers just yet.

In other news, the bacon we used to get for $6 is now $8-$9. Let's go Brandon!

What’s inflation 20% just on its own? Between that and the plandemic I’m actually surprised it’s not worse . There’s allot of price gouging but I have to commend business like Midway, Midsouth , Natchez, etc…… that aren’t . Most business that sell out of a product in minutes or hours “such as primers” will raise the price until it sits on the shelf for a while. I’ve seen some of my local gun shops selling primers for $79 and some for $150 . I know who’s going to be getting my future business.

During the prolonged peak of the shortage, I could still keep most of my revolver ammo 'topped off' by showing up regularly. They'd roll out the steel shelves now and again with ammo and I'd find .38s, .45 Colt, .44 spl in small lots with some frequency. Almost never .357 or .44 mag, though.

The thing I appreciated about Bass in this was that they kept the scarce ammo, when it was available, at 'pre-shortage' retail prices; no gouging at all. So, I'd still find .38spl, for example, at 19.99 to 23.99 per 50. I had hopes....but not now.

We always get used to it...

I refuse to pay those prices they are asking. Simple as that.

Perhaps if enough of us do that, then the supply will catch up with demand, and perhaps prices will come down.

The buyer has a lot of power, and things I don't have to have to live, I can postpone buying.

I have enough black powder, lead bullets, patching material, and flints, to tide me over. If not, so what.

But, let each do as they wish.

Hopefully this will all change for the better at the midterm elections, when the trash is carried out, and the toilets are flushed.

Oh, I heard the police in Ottawa arrested a duck...for honking.

Old men, and ducks...good job. Both are a threat to world peace.

There is no restriction other than you have to have a possession and acquisition license to purchase ammo, but not for powder or primers.

Thanks to me that is a restriction . But heck I also want a m320 grenade launcher and a mini gun

You have to have a possession and acquisition license to purchase a firearm, but, once you have that, you can buy guns and ammo.

I'm the same way. I'm not paying $35 for a box of .38 ammo, and I'm CERTAINLY not paying $60 for .45 ammo. I guess I'll just have to wait until things get back to whatever is going to pass for normal to get back to shooting.

I don't think these are the prices we will see a year to two from now.  Prices will come down, but will probably be at least 15% higher post Covid going forward.  Right now the ammo & component makers are passing on the costs of employee OT, increased raw material prices and increased transportation prices to their distributors and dealers who have no choice but to raise their own prices.  Once the makers get caught up, the OT costs will drop or disappear and hopefully the raw material ans transportation prices will drop as well.

We will also see the various overseas suppliers starting to show up on the shelves as well.  Cheddite shotgun primers are starting to show up and Cheddite hulls are also starting to come back to the American market.  When some of the niche suppliers of hard to find 2.5" shotgun ammo are starting to have ammo again, it 's a sign of things improving.

When Fiocchi, Mag-tech and Prvi Partisan get rolling again prices will start dropping again.  For that matter, who knows how much ammo and components are sitting on ships waiting to be unloaded or waiting to be shipped due to a shortage of shipping containers

When I started CAS in 2004, I bought Remington Gun Club shells for $3.99 per box, $39.99 a case.  Got these at a local Dick's Sporting Goods before they went anti.

A new gun store opened the day before yesterday in the little town nearest to me. I stopped in to have a quick look yesterday on my way back from the Post Office.

I DO have a lot more ammo than they do and nearly as many firearms! They have a nice selection of knives and hatchets though.

I hope that they do well!

my brother and his wife are new to the free states and are getting 9mm for about $20 per 50.  they also bought some .380 for $25 (which to me is not as bad as I anticipated).

Some of you are like me, in a career in the metals industry.

Since Jan 1, 2020, steel has gone from $.45/# to $1.55, aluminum from $1.60 to $5.25 and copper cable from $3.25 to $7-ish.  How metals have increased 300% and retail prices have only increased 20-50% confused me.  The national inflation rate of only 7.5% tells me that manufacturers are absorbing a lot of increases, and that is not sustainable.
