Rye Miles #13621 Posted December 7, 2014 Posted December 7, 2014 http://www.target.com/s/record+player I can't believe it!!!
Sparky Nelson Posted December 7, 2014 Posted December 7, 2014 Vinyl records are making a comeback. Audio geeks claim they sound better than digital music like CDs or MP3 files. I like records because you can't play a CD backwards to listen for satanic messages.
Big Sage, SASS #49891 Life Posted December 7, 2014 Posted December 7, 2014 About 20 years ago when I got rid of my last record player, I gave my collection of vinyl records to a guy who worked for me. He was an avid jazz collector and I had some he really wanted. I am sure today they are really collectors items. I know he enjoys them as much as I did.
Russ T. Sites Posted December 7, 2014 Posted December 7, 2014 I bought my 16 year old daughter one last Christmas she dug through some old records of mine and found out she liked rush. Go figure
DocWard Posted December 7, 2014 Posted December 7, 2014 Vinyl records are making a comeback. Audio geeks claim they sound better than digital music like CDs or MP3 files. I like records because you can't play a CD backwards to listen for satanic messages. The explanation I've been given is that when digitized, the sound is delivered through small bits of sound, in a staccato fashion, at such a high rate that the conscious ear can't discern the gaps, while subconsciously, it can be. Vinyl records, on the other hand, deliver sound in waves which are more pleasing sub-consciously. I don't know if it is true or not, but it sounds good. I bought my 16 year old daughter one last Christmas she dug through some old records of mine and found out she liked rush. Go figure My oldest daughter, now 20, is a huge fan of Rush and Led Zeppelin. My younger is a huge Zep fan, and likes Rush too. My younger daughter is more about the "feel" of the music that Led Zeppelin brings.
Rye Miles #13621 Posted December 7, 2014 Author Posted December 7, 2014 I have a Panasonic turntable with a strobe speed adjustment. Nothing sounded better than Direct to Disc records. Not many made but I remember I had Buddy Rich Orchestra and a Herbie Hancock album in DD, also had a Beatles album but If forgot which one.
Forty Rod SASS 3935 Posted December 7, 2014 Posted December 7, 2014 We gave one to our grandson for his birthday, a portable suitase style called an Executive. Don't recall the brand. It was under $60.00 on sale and it helped him clean out my old 33 1/3, 45, and 78 records..... some of the 78s going back to the days a 1/4 thick single-sided era. We also found a place that sold us a bag of 50 of the plastic "hole shrinker' disk thingies for the 45s for about $5.00.

Digitizing adds high frequency noise that's usually a higher frequency than humans can hear, but that noise can combine with frequencies in the music to distort them slightly. Most people don't care. The sound of digital is good enough, and it's way more convenient to carry a little MP3 player than a Walkman or a turntable. My oldest daughter, now 20, is a huge fan of Rush and Led Zeppelin. My younger is a huge Zep fan, and likes Rush too. My younger daughter is more about the "feel" of the music that Led Zeppelin brings. Sounds like you raised your kids right.
Dawg Hair, SASS #29557 Posted December 7, 2014 Posted December 7, 2014 You may call me a snob, but I listen to mostly classical music. Primarily piano, and, I may just be in outer space on this, but I have several piano concerti in both CD format (digital) and LP format (analog) and I swear the LP's sound better. I recently had to buy a new record player because my old one took a dive and when I have time and want to really relax I put on listen to something like Chopin's piano concerto num 2 or Beethoven's number 5 (Emperor) or Rachmaninoff's num 3 on the record player and float off to never never land. I know, I'm weird.
Alpo Posted December 7, 2014 Posted December 7, 2014 This bummed me a little bit. http://www.target.com/p/crosley-cr66-rochester-5-in-1-entertainment-center-with-auxiliary-input-am-fm-radio-tape-cd-player/-/A-10382955#prodSlot=medium_1_1&tempterm=record+player >This 5-in-1 entertainment center is on the cutting edge of sound quality and accommodates your modern technology just as well as its record player accommodates an antique phonograph album< CDs were invented around 1980. Less than 35 years ago. That makes LPs ANTIQUES?????
Marshal Mo Hare, SASS #45984 Posted December 7, 2014 Posted December 7, 2014 Records are analog, every single note is heard the way it was intended, if there is no damage to the record or player. CDs produce everything digitally comparable to the days when we only had 64 colors and then the player takes that information and tries to reproduce the original sound. When we try to do something like that with a digital picture like this We get things like this: A much fuzzier image.
Subdeacon Joe Posted December 7, 2014 Posted December 7, 2014 WHAT???? My hearing is so bad that I can't tell the difference.

Utah Bob #35998 Posted December 7, 2014 Posted December 7, 2014 While looking for something in the shed yesterday I found a box of LPs and a case of 45s that I thought we had discarded years ago. Havenn't opened them to see the titles yet, and we no longer have a turntable, but I'm now hip again!
John E. Law Posted December 7, 2014 Posted December 7, 2014 Think this one makes the records play better. I can just picture playing Archie and the Jugheads on an old 45 on this thing. 😄😃😀 http://www.bornrich.com/goldmunds-300000-turntable-is-worlds-most-expensive-turntable.html JEL
Shawnee McGrutt Posted December 7, 2014 Posted December 7, 2014 $300,000.00 for a turntable? one would have to really love music.
Caliope Cupcake #13981 Posted December 7, 2014 Posted December 7, 2014 they have never NOT sold them. I've bought and worn out 3 units in the last 25 yrs that include a turntable, CD and cassette tape players. The turntable quit on my 3 yrs ago so I just bought a simple turntable to sit on top. I always play Mom & Dad's 78s, especially the C'mas ones with the scratches. love it...

DocWard Posted December 7, 2014 Posted December 7, 2014 Sounds like you raised your kids right. Mrs. Doc and I have endeavored to do so. My oldest is currently in college, where she is in the choir (performed with the Central Ohio Symphony Orchestra and the Columbus Symphony Orchestra) and is working on a performance minor with clarinet. She also takes guitar lessons when she is home. My youngest is a senior in high school and is planning on studying music in college, possibly musical theatre. She plays a number of instruments, and since the band doesn't have an oboe player, the band director just loaned her an oboe because she "is the only person in band capable of learning the part (in a song he wants to perform) on oboe in three months." You may call me a snob, but I listen to mostly classical music. Primarily piano, and, I may just be in outer space on this, but I have several piano concerti in both CD format (digital) and LP format (analog) and I swear the LP's sound better. I know, I'm weird. I love all kinds of music, classical included. For me, there is one rule of thumb. Does the music take me somewhere, emotionally. Some listen to rock primarily, some country, others classical. I don't see that as weird, though. Some of my high points from my college days include performing The Messiah. Listening to Beethoven's Ninth last year was one of the high points of watching my daughters perform over the years. Always transported somewhere.
Tennessee Trapper Tom Posted December 8, 2014 Posted December 8, 2014 I still have the complete Kenwood stereo with 4 big 555s wood cased speakers that I bought in Baumholder Germany in 1977. I have a record collection totaling over 650 albums. Everything still works good. My wife bugged me to let it go for years. Now she's singing a different tune...dodged that one!

I know, I'm weird. Nothing weird about you at all! There's a reason classical music has lasted for so long. Simply put it's just great music! I have a cd by Horowitz that I play sometimes in my car, it relaxes me. Horowitz took liberties with the pieces he played. He kinda did his own thing. Great stuff! Trailrider #896 Posted December 8, 2014 Posted December 8, 2014 most of us have that problem. +1 But, I find it difficult to play 78's on a CD player.

Michigan Slim Posted December 8, 2014 Posted December 8, 2014 I bought my 16 year old daughter one last Christmas she dug through some old records of mine and found out she liked rush. Go figure That's funny. My kids both like all my old tunes (80's heavy metal). But then they also listen to the newer crap and c......c..... count...... countr........ country. There, I said it. BAARRRFFFF
Four-Eyed Buck,SASS #14795 Posted December 8, 2014 Posted December 8, 2014 Today's country sounds more like rock than it used to. My Boss has complained about the dang new country rap stuff his radio station's are playing now. I'm more into Big Band and show tunes myself. As a trumpet player, the modern rock/rap stuff just doesn't do anything for me.I play with an amateur concert band as well as at church. I also sit in with my wife's alumni band
Jimmy Reb, SASS #54804 Posted December 8, 2014 Posted December 8, 2014 My record player takes 78's. the half inch thick ones. And you have to crank it up to make it play. The volume control is the fuzzy cloth ball that is stuck into the horn. Sounds funny when the spring is winding down.
Rancho Roy Posted December 8, 2014 Posted December 8, 2014 Funny you should bring this up. Cleaning the basement I just found a stack of records that had only been played once. I used to record them to a reel to reel tape recorder and then put the record away. So I needed a turntable. Bought an old AR turntable off Ebay for nearly $300! Thirty years ago i was selling them for $80......
