I'm not pro union, but there was a news article (maybe BBC) that stated that the hourly wage for a dock worker is $20hr - $38/hr, which works out to approximately $41,000 to $77,000 a year.  In CT, NY, NJ and MA, $41,000 MIGHT get you a 1 bedroom apartment in places you'd rather not live.

Well no one told them to work their butts off on the docks in a non skilled labor job. That’s their choice and they can make a lot more with overtime. $5.00 a year for the next 5 years would be an extra $25.00 an hour. Who’ll pay for that raise ? Us consumers thats who!

The union east coast minimum base price is $39 per hour with the west coast workers earning considerably more. They want 77% raises over 6 years and a complete ban on automation.

They've been offered 50% raises over 6 years, triple contributions to their pension, better benefits (whatever that means) and the automation wording/rules to remain in place...they turned it down.

 

No matter what happens, the normal, everyday American consumer pays for it one way or another. I say screw these greedy people...they don't mind screwing the rest of us and I'm fed up with it.

Starting pay for a new worker is $20.00 an hour! At three years, it’s over $30.00 an hour and at six years it’s a few cents short of $40.00 an hour.

 

SO! In five years, starting pay would be $35.00 an hour and topped out would be over $70.00!

 

Now! It’s been almost 15 years since I retired. I had fifteen years at that job as a fabricator and electrician with mid level management responsibilities at the largest entertainment transportation company in the country.  My hourly rate was just over $31.00 an hour!  I DID get plenty of overtime.

On the west coast once a “dock worker” gets a few years under their belt there is a very good chance they are pulling down $150-$200,000 per year. I know this because a good friend of mine’s dad worked the docks in LA Harbor.

Also included in this title of “dock worker” are Stevedores, Crane Operators, Longshoremen. One is only a “dock worker” or laborer for a few years then they start moving up in status and pay through seniority. 
I have no sympathy or support these (BLEEP bleep, bleeping) no good money grubbing (Bleepers)

 

And another thing, the days of dockworkers throwing bags of stuff over their shoulders and humping all day is Film Noir dramatics. They aren’t the dock workers of old. Their swagger comes from emulating the old days, not from the “work” they do now. 
 

Screw ‘em! I’ll eat canned goods. 
 

The great thing is maybe this will open people’s eyes as to how much stuff is imported and no longer made here. 
 

Oh, and by the way, this will put another damper on our favorite sport - Shooting.

They can strike for higher wages sure by all means go for it but demanding companies run the way they’ve want is ridiculous!😡

My gut feeling is that this is going to be a long and nasty strike. Harold Daggett is not going to back down. I doubt he'll back down even if he looses the support of the rank and file.

When asked if the president would apply the Taft Hartley act ( which he won’t) Daggett said   “ Yea go ahead instead of 30 containers a shift we’ll do 6 or 7. This guy is a real scumbag !!

A close relation of mine works for a Southern california supermarket chain; his son works for Costco.  Joey tells me that there's been a run on toilet paper and bottled water at his store, and his son reports that his Costco sold out of TP two days ago.  What the heck ~ this is an East Coast issue at this time; plus, bung fodder is a domestic product - not much of that stuff goes through the ports, unless it's on it's way out.  

 

Mebbe @Rye Miles #13621's news can bring about some consumer sanity... and maybe the union will avail themselves of the opportunity to replace their so-called "leadership."   Na-aa-ah....

I think the best way we can pee all over these dock pansies is buy products that do not go through the docks. Made in USA, Canada and Mexico don’t come in through the docks, I am pretty sure of that.

About bananas … I checked prices just to see the effect. BJs, my local wholesale club, had them at 1.39 /3 lb for the longest time. Now 1.69.

My local grocery had them for $.79 lb for organic and $.59 lb for regular
