It has finally cooled off here and I celebrated by making a big batch of slow cooker chili.  What are your favorite cool weather recipes?

Split pea soup.   Not the smooth, flavorless canned stuff.  But with chunks of salt pork, kielbasa, carrots, celery, and onion.

Second choice is barley cooked in beef broth.

We do a hamburger based vegetable soup.

Chicken or beef stew is a fave. Chili works all year for me.

On Friday, we made crockpot chicken thighs with a sweet&sour and Sriracha marinade that was to die for.

Also, I found an interesting hot buttered rum recipe that I’m going to try.

Man does not live by food alone.

Cedrick's cassorole

I had to look that up.  Sounds like a halubki casserole.    In other words,  pretty darned tasty.

26 degrees right now. Green Chili and corn bread tonight.

Soups of all kinds. Mrs. Doc did a butternut squash soup not long ago that was amazing. My mom used to do a potato soup with chunks of ham that she would just cook until the potatoes pretty much melted in your mouth. She would also do a beef and vegetable soup, with big chunks of stew beef and tons of vegetables in a tomato stock. Chili (Texas style, small cubes of beef, no beans or beans on the side) is good for me any time of year, but definitely in winter. Green beans with ham, preferably cooked with the bone. I'm partial to Kentucky Wonder beans, personally. Of course, if I'm in a hurry for something warm for lunch, grilled cheese and tomato soup.

As my mom would say "stick to the ribs" kinds of food.

Miss Lorrie found a recipe for a childhood favorite that I had never tasted.

Buttermilk pie.  Needless to say, it has been added to the recipe file. Good stuff.

If you like that you will probably like both Shoo Fly Pie and Vinegar Pie.

Good soup be it homemade or canned and grilled cheese sandwiches. Cheap wheat bread with mayo on both sides of each slic and 1slice of Havarti and 1 slice of sharp cheddar cheese fried crispy brown.

You can’t use fancy or healthy bread for grilled cheese sammiches.

I also love about anything my wife makes in the crock pot. Beef stew, pork roast with potatoes and vegetables, lentil casserole, corned beef and cabbage...man, this makes me hungry :D

Country biscuits with white sausage gravy, bacon, V-8 (or a 50%/ 50% mix of orange and apple) juice, and coffee or hot chocolate.

You can also work in a few sausage links and hash browns, too, but they aren't really necessary.

Quick and easy... and appropriate 24 /7.

Drink a lot of red Koolaid.  Give the Dr.s something to get excited about.

Nothin’ like good old-fashioned goulash. Made a big pot last week.

Italian Jambalya works well in cold weather too.

A coworker has finally perfected his summer sausage recipe and harvested 12 deer over the last two weeks.  Looking forward to all the free fare that brings.  I offered to bring the bread and veggies.

We make a really yummy white chicken chili that is one of my favorites for colder weather.

Red beans and rice is another good 'un.

Of course with either, or neither, a nice loaf of home made bread always hits the spot!

And you get an overnight stay in the hospital.
