How many of you have become “SOME ASSEMBLY REQUIRED”?

Recommended Posts

I woke up a little early this morning. I have an appointment with the orthotics specialist today to get fitted for my new footwear.

After a few minutes, gathering up the other shoes that I have to bring with me, I started getting “dressed”.

I put on the usual T shirt and put my belt, my holster, and my biker watch in the jeans I am wearing today.

If I were going out to the shop, I’d probably put on my knee brace because it relieves the stress on the badly worn joint when I’m on concrete, standing and walking. Not today, but usually.

I have another brace/apparatus to correct the foot drop in my left foot, the bad one, that attaches to my boot/shoe.  I wear it if I’m going to be walking a lot.  Today I’m just driving and will only take a few steps, three or four times all day, so it stays home.

Next, I put in my hearing aids and grab my phone to adjust the volume and filters.

Then I put on my shoes and socks. Not out of the ordinary for anyone, but still…

On the way out the door, I’ll grab a pair of reading glasses so’s I can see the fine print on the obligatory paper work that comes with any of these adventures.

I’ll pick up and holster my EDC , pausing to check the magazine and the chamber.

Finally, I will put on my ball cap and sunglasses!!

Ya’ never think about this stuff until, one morning, you see that you’re spending fifteen or twenty minutes just getting ready to go to the car!!

YEPPER!!  Like the Marshal, I too have a "Checklist."  I have to laugh at myself as I remember all the "Checklists" from the days I was a Pilot.  My memory is shot and without my "Copilot" going over the checklist, I'll forget something I really need.  Unfortunately, "they" forgot to issue us an Operations Manual for getting OLD.  It's a RPITA.

Gotta include turning off all the windows on your cell phone so you don't use up minutes while you are out of wifi range.

Some of you seem to have the wrong idea!!  This is funny as all get out!!

Since I refuse to just fold my tent,  I have gathered some damned fine equipment to keep my life the way I want it!!

There are days when I don’t do ANY of this, when I just kick back and let the world go by.  Other days, I put on my armor and gird my loins and do battle the way I always have!!  B)

OLG’s borg line fits SO PERFECTLY that it emphasizes the humor of the situation!!

I learned a LOOOOONNNNG time ago that “you might as well LAUGH ‘cause it doesn’t do one damned bit of good to cry about it!”  <_<

If you remember the old Burt Reynolds movie “Hooper” and the opening scene, you get my drift!!

Just before bed, I roll up my summer shorts, t-shirt and skivvies and place the roll beside the bedroom door.
Up at 4, out of bed around 5, grab the roll and the glasses on the head board.

Weigh my fat ass, get dressed, pour of cup of coffee made the night before.

Start the lawn and planter irrigation systems, read the news.
Laugh hard at Hunter Biden convicted of all three felonies...

Wake up, out of bed and slip through the 300 lbs. of dogs that guard my sleep.  Get into a pair of jeans and socks.  Turn on the computer and grab some OJ.  Check a site I administer, fix what  needs fixing.  Cruise through my regular favorite sites to see what fell schemes my ideological foes announced since the previous night.  Breakfast and whatever tasks are up for the day.

ONLY fifteen or twenty minutes?  Takes more like an hour when you count in brushing your teeth, toilet duties, shampooing, combing, etc. your hair, getting your AM medicines sorted out, topicals for arthritis pain, etdamncetera......and then trying to find where you put your car keys, cell phone, Life Alert gizmo, and all the rest.  Then there's turning around to go back and get whatever you forgot: coupons, shopping lists, addresses, membership discount cards...you know what I mean.

F'rinstance, I went to Safeway this morning.  Got my shopping list out and found NO PEN OR PENCIL anywhere to mark of the stuff on the list as I put it in the cart.

Somehow we still get by................mostly!

Because of me and all the health crap she's been through in the last 2 years.

They took her off the oxygen this afternoon and she can stay above 88 on her own, she might be able to come home tomorrow! Yay

Get up, take off my CPAP mask and connect my CPAP mask to the cleaner, check my blood sugar, weigh myself, eat breakfast, take my pills, send my morning texts so people know I'm upright for another day, get cleaned up and dressed as necessary for the day.   Make sure I have my phone, 3 pens, car keys  and my reading glasses if I'm going anywhere.  Load magazines if I'm going to the range.

After coming back from prostatectomy and cardiac bypass, it is apparent to me "Walk or Die".
I see so many  in my age group that are all crippled up from a lifetime of lack-of-movement, and now it is too late for them to move at all.

Then there is the opposite situation where "souvenirs", old injuries from an ultra active life come back to haunt you late in the game.  No big thing, and even if I could go back in time, I would do the same things again, less a mean deed or two.

To quote Indiana Jones, "It's not the years, it's the mileage." I've been exercising the hips, so they're feeling better. but now the knees are hurting.

What Rip said!!^^^^^

I’ve had a very active life with some serious consequences!!  When I fill out hospital forms and I get to the part where they ask me to list previous surgeries and treatments, I jist draw a laughing emoji and write “not enough paper to complete list! ‘SEE PATIENT”

I went and shot, (attempted to shoot) the Black Gold Shootout last week! I say “attempted” because I was only able to shoot two stages and needed physical assistance to do that!! BUT!! I was there! I was moving! And I refused to just lay down and quit!

I did my usual routine for the morning and I didn’t do any real damage to the foot that’s been plaguing me, but having been confined to a chair or the couch or bed for nearly two years, my stamina was nonexistent!!

Next week, I will receive my new orthotic brace and footwear and if my doctor approves, I’ll be on the stationary bike that day!

HMMMM!!  Another brace and special shoes!!  Another step in the assembly process!!  Another step toward BORGDOM!!!

I relate to that.

I have enough “chassis reinforcement” in titanium attached to my spine and high strength carbon fiber and advanced plastics to be declared a “Resto Mod”.

I really think that I’m more of a Rat Rod, but I let folks think what they like!!

I have a lot of hardware inside my bod and carry a lot more on the outside.  JFWIW I weigh 201 pounds buck nekkid and 219 to 222 fully dressed and ready for town.

Wedding ring, boots, jeans, belt with big silver buckle, shirt, skivvies and socks, pocket watch with chain and fob or a wrist watch, catheter bag and fixings, cash, keys, hearing aids, Life Alert gadget, trifold wallet filled with stuff, big ol' black hat, flip phone, eye glasses, falcon necklace, never fewer than three pocket knives, note book, felt tip pen, pistol and holster plus at least three reloads, and a small six compartment plastic box with essential medications.

That's what I carry on my person.

In the car I have several bottles of water, a hardwood cane / walking stick. a Rollerator stroller for emergencies, always a waterproof jacket and a heavier jacket because of our unpredictable weather, sun glasses, a "credit card wallet", (one of the handiest things I own), a big and a little flashlight.  There's more, like three more hand guns and a carbine, etc.,  but I can't list it all.

My back aches and my feet hurt...and I'm always tired.  Go figure.

I learned long ago that whenever I have a medical appointment I wear one of my vests with the big side pockets.  When I get out of the car I put the car keys, house keys, bag of Golden Dollars and anything else in my pants or shirt pockets in the vest pockets.  Then when I get to the scale I can take the whole loaded vest off and not be weighing all that stuff that isn't me.
