Went to DMV today

Times are tough and saw it standing in line at the DMV. I thought I was in a welfare or a soup kitchen line. You could see the poorly dressed and under fed trying to get an ID or trying to get tags for a clunker car that I would have towed to the scrapyard.

California DMV = "Department of Mindless Villians."

I almost cry every time I have to renew a registration, 'specially after hearing what friends and relations in other states pay. I mean golly gee... my 12-year old F-150 is 'bout due - $181.00 (for one year), plus about another $80 or so for it's bi-annual tailpipe sniff. :(

Well you have to give them folks at the DMV credit for their creative ideas. They have so many ways to

disguise a tax to make it look like something that is actually going to do the taxpayer some good.

Of course a closer examination reveals that it is just a disguise to take money out out of your pocket and

put it into theirs.

Badger, what're registration fees like up yore way...? I'm told that Oregon's reasonable... and my sister in Texas tells me that her fees are less than half ours (but what the heck does she know~? )

I went into the DMV here in Utah a couple weeks ago to get a Utah driver's license. I filled out the paperwork and got in line behind a woman. She finished her transaction, then it was my turn. The guy behind the counter apologized for me having to wait. I couldn't believe what I heard. "WHAT??? You've gotta be kidding!!! I've only been waiting 6½ minutes!! This is nothing compared to what I had to go through in California!!!"

The guy smiled and said, "Would you mind telling that to some of the other people who come in here?" I guess some folks don't know when they're well off.

Just renewed the tag on ol' green truck. '97 Chevy Dually cost $76.00, fifty of which was county wheel tax. They ain't bashful around here when they nail you with a tax. Kina' refreshin' in an annoying way.:lol:

Oh! My old Harley is $37.00, and they don't care how old or new either. :P

Waited 1 hour outside and 1 hour inside. Took 3 minutes to sign driver's renewal, thumb print, eye test, photo, and gave 'em $31.

One nice thing about driving an older vehicle -

1970 Mercury Cyclone GT

1970 Avanti

61 Harley Servicar

Mississippi Antique Vehicle Tags ! ! ! ! ! ! !

A one fee of $25.00 per 25 year old vehicle.

$75.00 in 8 years is not bad - I can live with that.

I just renewed my license plates at the DMV today. They got me for 99 yankee greenbacks. Add to that, 120 yankee greenbacks that the city gets me for a city sticker....

I hate this democratic state...

My renewal is coming up. Last year, my 8 year old "evil" little SUV was well over $200.00. No vanity tags, nothing special, just mine. Since it will be turning 9, I hope it finally gets below $200.00. I get the biannual sniff this year too.

With some of those pieces of guano I see on the roads around here, I wish the state would institute the safety inspections I had to go through living in other states. Some of the vehicles I see on the roads really scare me.

Truth is all states have their little hands out.. lol.. In MO the registration was cheap, but the darn personal property tax was high!!! I have found most places cost about the same to live depending upon what you like to own.

Up here in Montana if your car OR truck is 11 yrs old or older you can buy a permanent sticker for the license plate. It runs about 1 1/2 x what it would cost to renew it for 1 yr.Never have to go back and stand in line again.Plus they don't do tail pipe sniffing up here.My 2000 Merc Grand Marquis will cost about $130 to get that sticker this year.Got em for my 72 F100 when I bought it and same on my 94 Escort. Both added up to about $200.

Hardpan that sounds like NH, last years reg on the '05 Dakota was $184 between state and city fees. Nice thing is we dont have to go to DMV, you can do it with the city/town clerks office and pay an extra fee of a couple of bucks for the service. Dont think I've ever waited more then three minutes to get the job done.

My registration is $156 for my '06 F250 - and that includes the $10 state parks parking sticker :D ...We don't have smog checks here in West Michigan either ;) ...heck, up to about a year and half ago you could still by cigarettes from a vending machine in a bar.

One of these days I'm gonna get me that special tag for my truck.

One of these days when I've got some extry cash.

'Course by the time I get some extry cash I'll probably be too old to drive.

Pard,

I'm glad to have you here in the Wasatch, but be careful about what you say outside, we don't need no more people moving here, especially folks that drive a Prius with a certain bumper sticker.

Anyone asks from other states," the winters are brutal, you can't get a drink, no food other then steak or trout, no theater, culture etc. You would be much happier staying where you're at" ;)

Dusty, thanks for the advice.

Uh...let me change my previous statement: "After standing in the Utah DMV line for 3½ hours, I finally got fed up with it and yelled, 'HEY! I only had to wait three hours in California! What is it with you people?'" How's that? :)

Also...it was a blustery five degrees out at our place this morning. The thermometer doesn't like to go above 20 degrees, so if you like the warm climates, you'd better stay where you are.

And...if you can't subsist on steak or trout...well, dinner's over.

Again, thanks for the advice. I'll try to remember next time. :D

$54 for my 1996 F-250 Diesel (which is about to turn a quarter of a million miles! :o ).

$62 for my spouse's 2007 Dodge 3500 Dually.

Not complainin', but it appears that Texas just cares about whether it runs or not as to how much they're gonna charge ya. :D

Oh.....an no tail sniffin'. Good thing too since I removed the converter (or at least all the innerds) when I replaced the exhaust all the way back from the turbo with 4" a few years ago. I think the old 7.3 would not pass.

And speakin' of bein' grumpy...

Here in the Central Valley, we have to endure a special auto registration "fee" for exceeding air quality index standards. The Valley, which is mostly agricultural, is pretty much enclosed, trapping air pollutants.

Mind you, the Valley is about 22,500 sq miles, with a population totalling under a million. However, the Bay Area, with a population of almost 8 million and covering an area about a third as large, doesn't have near the problem - prevailing winds blow their crap into the Valley!

So... since we have it and it's trapped here, we have to pay the penalties.

Sorta like that poor gal in Afganistan who was raped then sent to prison for adultry!

Thank yew, Sacramento ("Sack o' Excremento!") for being so knowledgable and wise... <_<

I understand how you feel Hardpan. When I first registered my then three year old Mustang in Washington state in '98, the registration fee was $363! That didn't include the state safety inspection fee, the emissions inspection fee, OR the new license plate fee. That year cost me more than $400... All because I moved back home from Florida... Thankfully, a couple of years later, the laws were changed so now re-registering most vehicles costs in the realm of about $35, or $50 for the biannual emissions inspection years.

Down here in Jawja, the tag on my 10 year old Dodge Ram was $56. And we can renew our driver's license on line. A 10 year license is $30 last time I did it. We do have $25 tail pipe sniffin in metro Atlanta but not state wide.

Those tag bills come straight to your mail box at birthday time. They are real efficient about them bills.

So, does Illinois and GA have property taxes on vehicles on top of the tags?

I have a Chevy Suburban (1990) and have to have the biannual sniff (smog) test. $40 including the $8.75 to the State of California for the certificate. Since I have VA service connected disability rating of 100%, The State of Calif gave me a DV (Disabled Vet) plate and the fees are $0. Every year on Dec 31st, less than 5 mins on the DMV website and the tags show up in a couple of weeks.

The actual tag fee is only about $20. Ga. has an advalorum tax on vehicles based on the value and age. It varies by county based on the millage rate.
