When my Father was transferred from CEPE* to Public Relations, the Golden Hawks became his main focus for a while.

I still have the shoulder patches for the team.

* Central Experimental and Proving Establishment. (He got to see and play with all the cool stuff!)

This, and Jim Bede's BD-5-J.  I'm also a fan of the Beechcraft B-17-D Stagger Wing and the Grumman Goose.

Sage, were any of the data/specs from the Boeing X-20 Dyna-Soar used in the Shuttle?

I don't know. I was in Production Engineering when I left Manufacturing and the design work was done except for Engineering fixes needed by Manufacturing.

An awesome airplane. Would love to have flown one.

A friend flew one as a forward air controller in Vietnam. Said it was amazing.

As a young Marine, I was an Aviation Ordnanceman, and I worked on them. Good little airplane. Four M60 machine guns in the sponsons, and they could carry rockets, flares, and gun pods. The A model even had provisions to carry two AIM-9 Sidewinder Missiles.

Erco Aircoupe. A remarkable little plane designed to touch down in a crab angle because it had no rudder pedals. The theory is it was safer because the pilot couldn’t cross control the rudders & ailerons when landing in a crosswind. It worked, but later versions were retrofitted with pedals because pilots found landing without them too unnerving.

If I could own a plane, I'd be a vintage one, preferably a Bi Plane.

Like this? My great grandfather learned to fly in one at the Wright Brothers flying school and then brought one back to St Louis. Orville Wright signed his pilots license. What a contraption!

my idea of a biplane I’d like to own:

That's pretty darn neat family history.

And yes a biplane like that!

Back in the mid 80s, I had a chance to buy a 47 Travelair! They wanted $5'500 for it! Wife was not having it!!

Sweet. It probably would have broken you financially to keep it airworthy. Plus, there is a condition called AIDS - aviation induced divorce syndrome. 😁

I might buy one of these.  According to the pilots, the Fairey Swordfish had no vices and one had to be incredibly incompetent to crash one.

AHH! A Swordfish (Or Stringbag).

The Bismarck's nemesis!

Side story:

As a kid, my next door neighbour, June., an English War Bride had a cousin killed on HMS HOOD when the Bismarck sank her.

It was so cool! Only a couple gauges and a switch labeled "Contact"! Beautiful wood prop with brass tips. It started the first time he thru that prop thru. Ya could see light through the covering on the fuselage! Damn it was cool  Dark blue.

I always liked the looks of the Cessna 195 with that radial engine and big spinner.

My personal Fave's are the YB-35 and YB-49.  Haden't been for Stewart Simington and his dirty politics, we would have been flying flying wings decades ago.  Next Bestest is the Beechcraft Stager Wing.  Gorgeous they are.
