How do YOU spell it?

Diagonal cutting pliers. Dikes, or dykes?

Microphone. Mic or mike?

Micrometer. Mic or mike?

Making your engine run faster. Suped or souped?

The diminutive when referring to someone as honey. Hun or hon?

We all know what the word is. We all pronounce it the same. But how do you spell it?

DIagonal Cutters are Dikes.

Both microphones and micrometers are Mics

A motor vehicle with enhanced performance has been Suped Up (from "super," over or above)

I don't think I have ever written the diminutive of  "honey," but if I did, it would likely be "hon."

On another board somebody was talking about diagonal cutting pliers and he wrote it d ykes. I presume that the net nanny on that forum decided that dykes was a derogatory term for a lesbian, and therefore could not be used.

As an aside, you are also not allowed to use the diminutive form of the name for the small mammal with a mask and a ringed tail. Apparently coon is a bad word. And you are not even allowed to use the term negro.

Anyway. When I read that I thought that his problem was that he had spelled it wrong - that is spelled with an i. Then I looked it up. Both dikes and dykes are correct spellings.

And of course that got me thinking about talking into the mic or using the mic to measure something. Usually when I see somebody using the diminutive for honey, in print, they spell it with a u. I presume that's to make sure you understand the sound that is being made. If you spell it with an o, the reader might think it's supposed to sound like the word on.

And I frequently see people writing about souping up their car.

Diagonal cutting pliers. Dikes, or dykes? Growing up, my dad always called them "side-cutters," so that tends to be what I call them.

Microphone. Mic or mike? Mic

Micrometer. Mic or mike? Dunno. Never gave it any thought

Making your engine run faster. Suped or souped? Engine run faster? Usually "thrown rod."

The diminutive when referring to someone as honey. Hun or hon? Never gave it much thought, but have usually seen it "hun."

We all know what the word is. We all pronounce it the same. But how do you spell it? I-T

Yeah, when I was in my late twenties I started hearing people talk about channel locks. My daddy called them water pump pliers, so that's what I always called them and that's what I still call them. But at least now I know what people are talking about when they say channel locks.

It confused me greatly when I first heard it.

Why spell anything that I can say a lot easier and never have to write it down?

Let's face it, Dude.  You ain't sophisticated to be writing things anyway. :P

Diagonal cutting pliers.   Amazingly enough, I have never written the word.  That said, since I think of the things that hold back the ocean as a dike, I'd call the cutters a dyke.   I understand that's unPC now.

Microphone is a mic.

Micrometer, is also a mic.

Making your engine run faster is surprisingly souped.   I base this on the fact that souped comes back okay, but suped has a red wavy line under it.  :)

The diminutive of Honey is Hon.

How do you spell it?    I  T

I watched ZOOM as a kid.
