AR 15 in 9mm

Recommended Posts

I'm thinking about one of these. Pretty affordable and 9mm is about the cheapest ammo around except for .22lr

Anyone have one of these? If you do how do you like it?

Ages ago I had a pair of Olympic arms lowers and I bought uppers, one in 9mm and one in 45acp. They used modified sten magazines. To avoid mistakes I put red electrical tape on the mags and feed area for one caliber and white tape on the corresponding areas for the other caliber.

I held off on getting an AR in 9mm for a long time because I just didn't see the point.  Most are straight blow back and have a recoil impulse similar to if not heavier than a properly gassed 5.56.  That being said 9mm ARs are a lot of fun, and if you already have Glocks the mag compatibility is very tempting.

If anyone needs some 10 rounds mag I have these listed in classifieds:

AR 15 9mm ProMags 10 rnd, (three)

These look new unfired but one looks to have been put in a magwell & all have a couple rub marks from just being together.

7-10-24 All 3 for $70 Shipped to you in the USA

I have handled a PSA AR-9 pistol with brace.  The trigger was horrible.  I could not run the gun fast because I was not letting the trigger completely reset before I tried to fire another round.  This was remedied with a PSA drop-in trigger.  I probably put 200 rounds through the PSA AR-9 pistol with no failure to feeds or failure to fires/eject.  The PSA AR-9 does not have a last round, bolt hold open capability.

I personally prefer the Ruger PC Carbine show above.  There are several versions available now.  Last round, bolt hold open.  Can move the non-reciprocating bolt handle to the left side or leave it on the right.  Decent trigger.

Both use Glock mags.

I have looked at several over the years and cannot decide. The Henry Homesteader, the Ruger PCC, and the Springfield Armory 9 mm carbine.  Although I really like the idea I just can't justify money spent on a toy used even less than my cap and ball guns.

Well I’m not interested in the Ruger and I’m not going to build my own. I like  the AR platform and I’m really only interested in those that may have one!

If you do have one how do you like it in 9mm?

it takes all brands oif ammo .

I got Spikes  brand   lower t hey call it stripped but it comes with pins  mag release,  and bolt release.  sportsman warehouse has them

it also have last round hold open

2"  + groups at 50 yard with no mag red dot

recoil is more than my lever rifle with light 38s  with factory  9mm

it runs good with lower power rounds with only  a spring change

I don't have the PSA model, but I have a Foxtrot Mike with a 16" barrel that's a lot of fun to shoot.  If someone has a steel challenge match close to you the 9MM PCC's are great fun for that sport, and some of the skills transfer to cowboy shooting too.  For a real hoot, Taylor Freelance makes a 60 round magazine for them.  I don't think you can go wrong with the PSA stuff unless you're thinking of shooting USPSA PCC.  In that case you'll have to spend about 6X the money to be competitive.

Thanks but I don’t plan on doing any competition with it, I just want to shoot it at the range. Might be a decent house gun too!

Mine hangs on a hook next to my door.  Still 9MM, but with the 16" barrel the bullet is travelling about 200 fps faster.  To me it makes a better house gun than a 223 does.

I definitely agree with your thinking.

@Rye Miles #13621 I noticed the PSA AR-9s say “Gen 4”. To me that’s a good indicator they’ve worked some bugs out. I see they get some good reviews.
When I bought my PC Carbine I was looking at AR9s, but reliability wasn’t that great, so I bought a PC Carbine.
The thing I like about the PSA guns is you can use Glock mags. They’re the most reliable magazines I have ever used.
I hope you get a fun reliable gun.

Bear in mind that a lot of AR9s have a break in period of 200 to 500 rounds in some cases that I’ve read.

I would do some searches for forum reviews. We can’t post links to other forums on the Wire / Saloon

I “built” one a while ago. Bought a complete upper from Midway when it was cheap. Has a 4” barrel.

I first put it on a normal AR lower with the Endomag magazine adapters (converts normal AR mags to 9mm with the extractor built in to the mag). I quickly learned that it was extremely unreliable (at least with this upper/BCG)

I ended up buying a stripped Glock mag lower from Joe Bob outfitters and built a pistol lower. The particular lower I used has the extractor bolted to it. So I run the 33 round Glock magazines and haven’t had many issues with it. I occasionally will load some 147gr berrys bullets and run them with my suppressor. Thing is a fun little toy with those. Otherwise it stays loaded with 115gr hollow points.

I built one a few years ago, carbine length bbl and an arm brace stock. Holo sights and Glock mags, it’s scary fast to get on target, super easy to control. Small and compact. Very fun to shoot and if you really needed a gun that could do a lot of damage fast in a close environment and used a pistol ctg it’s a decent choice YMMV

Mine uses the old Colt pattern mags, last round bolt hold open and easy to load magazines are "it" for me.

The toughest part was finding an extension to pin onto my bbl (so I could run it with an old school stock)

I have a Diamondback Firearms DB9R, an AR in 9mm that uses Glock mags, has a rail, a decent trigger (for factory) 16 1/2 inch barrel, Magpul furniture and I really like it. I replaced the trigger with a drop-in making it a 6 lb pull, minimal reset and a joy to shoot. The price was reasonable $6-700 last year from Buds. I wish I had two.
