Remington small pistol Primers

Recommended Posts

I'm asking this for a friend. He's not a CAS shooter, rather just target puncher and we target shoot every week. He said he bought a couple thousand Remington small pistol primers and having problems seating many cases fully. I don't use Remingtons, just Federals and Winchester, so couldn't answer, but did try a few in my press and yes several wouldn't seat fully. Looking at internet I did read some re-loaders also had some problems. Was wondering if anyone else here had similiar problems or if it was just a batch of bad sized primers?

They are slightly taller than federals. So they need to be set deeper than the federals. I know I can’t fit 100 in my Dillon primer tubes!

More likely,  dirty primer pockets ;)

I thought so too, but he said after several he cleaned them, and I tested after he asked me to look at them on brand new Starline brass. probable as I told him a bad batch.

I've only used 100 of mine in 9mm. None seated fully without extreme handle pressure. I then used my lee hand primer gizzy and had to use hands and squeeze like hell just to get them flush. The rest will be saved for when there is no other brand available. Not worth the hassle for me. Haven't tried them in my SDB however!

I’ve run them through my Dillon 650 and have never had any problems with them. I think mine are from around 2004-2006 production.  I have several thousand still left. Don’t know if they made changes to the size of them since back then or not.

I'd look hard at the Starline Brass.

Have him load a handful of old brass...

I had same experience as Tar Heel Doc.   Couldn't get 100 in a Dillon tube but no other problems.  But it's been several years.      GW

Loading 38 special on a Dillon 750, with clean primer pockets, it takes full, almost extreme handle pressure to seat fully.  Have tried various brass mfrs. with same results.  They do go bang ok, but I agree with a previous poster, not worth the aggravation.  Once I use up my stock, won't buy them again unless no other option.  Too bad because their packaging is much more compact and handy than Federal!

I use Remington and Federal small pistol primers interchangeably in my light sprung pistols and rifles without incident. They always go bang. Dump a box of Remington SPP into a primer tray and it’s easy to see that some are taller than others. I squish them all the same. I have also noticed some of the cups are more domed than others. Seat them to the bottom of the pocket and don’t worry about it. They all look the same after seating.

Loaded many thousands of Remington primers large and small, rifle and pistol, over the years.  In my experience, they've always been harder to seat than any others, small rifle in .223 were the worst of all.  They always went bang.

Given a choice, I use anything else, but sometimes you have to use what you can get.

I did, and I won't do it again.  Consistently hard to seat resulting in several high primers.  I struggled through 1000 and haven't bought them again.

I bought a case in 2023 (they were the only primers i could get at the time) and have had nothing but problems with them in my guns. i think in stock guns they might be okay but i don't have any standard guns to try them out. I have since been able to get federals and switched back and have not had a single problem with feds

I just loaded 1000 38 special rounds with Remington primers, they loaded smoothly in my 650. So far they've all gone bang.

I recently bought Remington large pistol primers, won’t buy again! I use a Lee hand primer and they require both hands to seat fully! I don’t have a problem with any other brand, they seat with one hand pressure that includes CCIs which prior to the current Remingtons were the hardest to seat.

Give me FEDs or Winchesters, no problems.

Good info.

I can tolerate a high primer better in my Marlin .38 than I can in my Ruger .32s.

Remington primers were $64/k, so I bought a couple of bricks to try.  CCIs were $85 and work in my guns.

No Federals or Winchesters were at my LGS.

I've been loading Genex SPP and have good luck with them which is good since I bought several thousand of them when primers were hard to get!  I do like Winchester primers and would use them exclusively if I'd had that opportunity.  Anyway the Genex have been loading fine in 9mm, .38 Special and lately in .30 Carbine (pistol).  I've used Remington in the past and don't remember having any problem with them but it's been a few years.

Never a problem with any Remington, as a matter of habit, always start with clean the primer pockets.  Bought a few thousand during the Great Dumpster Fire of 2020 , large and small, pistol and rifle and not a problem one.
