Trailrider #896
What is the source of this production? It is true there have been problems with the helium leaks, but NASA says there is adequate helium onboard to permit successful return to Earth. As to Starliner being "stuck" at the ISS, that is pure Bravo Sierra! The extension of the stay is to permit additional tests of the Starliner systems. That is not unusual, as this is a test flight, and rather than stressing the astronaut test pilots with a compressed schedule, this will give them more time to complete their tasks. NASA has had a tendency since Apollo 7 to overtask their crews (see Shirra, Wally, telling Houston to back off on the timeline!). I don't think anyone is happy with the problems Starliner has experienced during its development. But a second crewed spacecraft is needed in case a problem developed with SpaceX Crew Dragon. The concept is similar to back when Titan I was developed as a backup to Atlas D as our ICBM. Hopefully, sooner than later, both of these "capsules" will be replaced by fully operational Starships and SuperHeavy boosters from SpaceX. Ad Astra!

Insurance would BE much less expensive if the Government would just stay out of it and let the Free Market control it. The customer could choose what he wants and pay for just that. If he chose wrong, he'd have to pay for that too. 2
Colorado Coffinmaker
Getting back on topic PLUS ONE for Trailrider # 896. John Kloehr
They knew they had a leak before launch. Now turns out they have five leaks. Leaks are stopped for now, the system would be turned off at this point (when docked to the ISS) anyway. Return to earth takes seven hours, there is enough hydrogen on board to last ten times longer. Not stuck at all. While not stuck, the teams are taking more time to investigate and learn about what is happening to have the leaks. And doing so in the environment where they have the leaks and are most likely to learn from and about them. Interesting but not dramatic. I guess click bait is a good characterization. Big Sage, SASS #49891 Life
Let me start with a little background. I worked on the Apollo and the Space Shuttle and spent 40 years as an aerospace engineer and manager. From the outside the new Boeing Starliner looks like the Apollo on steroids. Sure the electronics are totally different and a lot of the systems too. But we at North American Aviation sure as hell didn't take as long to get our capsule in orbit and beyond as this has taken for this new capsule. With all the new wizz kids who were raised with computer and cell phones in their hands instead of baseball bats, gloves and balls, you would think all the problems that Boeing had had could be fixed pronto! Maybe they need to get some of old timers back from retirement, who got men to the moon and back pretty damn quick when compared what is happening today.........at least the ones who are still alive! This is nothing more than another NASA fiasco like what happened to Space Shuttle. A great program that NASA screwed up! 7

Sedalia Dave
The problem that all the wiz bang management today consists of people that got their MBA without every having to actually hold a job as an engineer. All they do is attend seminars and hire consultants that sell them process after process that touts increased productivity but instead puts into place ever more onerous processes that end up killing productivity. Engineers spend more time complying with the process than they spend actually producing the product. Six Sigma has become so perverted that it is a waste of resources. Agile Programming is the current buzz word process that all but guarantees failure. Companies now spend more effort on DEI and feel good initiatives than they do on quality assurance. Speaking of Quality Assurance it is all but non existent and exists in name only. The worst part is that there is no such thing as holding people accountable for doing a bad job. Wouldn't want to hurt their feelings. No instead of punishing people for their stupidity, a new process is enacted to punish everyone else. Best explanation is when one person poops their pants the corrective action is to make everyone else wear a diaper. When I started my aerospace job after college, I was assigned as an Engineering shop contact and spend all day everyday in the manufacturing world solving problems with engineering design errors (and there were lots of them). I learned how to build hardware and how the individual mechanic did his job. I eventually was recruited by Production Engineering whose main responsibility was to work with Design Engineering to design the product so manufacturing could build it better. The company sent me to get an MBA when I was 40 years old ! When I retired I was manager over 125 specialists in all areas from flight line to fabrication whose job was to make sure we delivered a product to our customer that was within cost, quality and schedule requirements. It was a great career and I loved it.....and was pretty good at it too! 2

Colorado Coffinmaker
Getting back to the Subject Matter. The Strainer isn't "Stuck" at the ISS forever. At some point, it will have to Un-Dock to free up the dock for other arrivals. The only current question is whether there will be crew on board when NASA/Boeing try to re-enter it. ISS may be a bit crowded but I'd vote to hang out and wait for Space X. Plus, at this point in time, the answers change so often there is no way for the public to factually know what is going on. Most of the YouBoob presentations are by people who have no affiliation with anybody who knows anything either. Just blow up the latest rumors into "Click Bait" of which nothing is new or actual fact. I understand, going forward, Boeing and NASA will be selling seats on Starliner at "Bargain" prices. 2

In none of those cases is it stated, implied, or hinted at that you will be there forever, the way you are insisting that the word "stuck" means. Colorado Coffinmaker
Yea, well, NOT QUITE. Close, but no Cigar. You still have "that" "STUCK" word in there. How about "Delayed??" Besides, being "stuck" at the ISS implies "they" can't get it loose. Sort of like a rusty piston being stuck in a cylinder. All that has to be done with Starliner is release the clamps and give it a little shove. Actually, release the clamps and the lump will just drift away. Pat Riot
I’m pretty sure I would wait for Space X if I were part of the Starliner crew regardless of “orders”. They should definitely consider renaming that spacecraft and the program. Perhaps “Satellite Drifter”. Because if it can’t fly home it will need to be cut loose to drift with all the other space junk… I think we have our name “Space Junk”! Or how about “Spatium Purgamentum”? Latin for Space Trash. It sounds great in Latin. “In tonight’s news the Spatium Pergamentum project is back on track to finish its true mission in space. It will be a special laboratory used to study the degradation of space craft left in orbit. In the future scientists can study the craft to see the effects of outer space on the various systems on the craft and learn from it. The head of NASA gave the project a smiling “thumbs up” at his retirement party today. In other news…” 1

Trailrider #896
According to one report, part of the problem with one thruster may be a bulged Teflon seal in a N2O4 line on one thruster. May not need that thruster if the other four are working. They are still analyzing all these systems, as the microgravity environment on orbit cannot be duplicated on Earth. The other problem might be the life of the spacecraft's batteries. Apparently, the life estimate has been extended from 50 days to 90 days. Don't know if the batteries can be recharged, but I doubt it. As to utilizing a CrewDragon to return the Starliner crew, it would depend on what's available. As I recall, the next CrewDragon launch won't be to the ISS, but will be a private crew scheduled to do an EVA! I believe a CrewDragon can be fitted out with more seats than the three that have been used before. There is no hurry, so there is time to figure things out. For sure, there will be some redesign work needed on the Starliner before it can be certified for operational flights. Stay tuned...
