The stage starts shotgun in hand. The shooter is shooting a SxS. He is holding it open but in a "trail" carry has one would do while hunting. is this OK?? As the TO I told him its not and he is breaking the 170. I was told I was wrong and it can be held that way according to the "new" SASS rules!! What say you.

I'm not sure what you mean by the "trail" position. I know of nothing that has changed with the 170 rule.

The TO should not start the shooter in a faulted position. As such, I believe that you were correct.

What do you mean by 'Trail Carry"?

Once on the firing line, at no time can the shooter violate the 170.

Firing line – From first firearm placed on the loading table until all firearms are confirmed as cleared at the unloading table. (SHB pg. 43)

What is "trail" carry? To me if the muzzle breaks the 170, then it is a violation.

Had to look up trail carry. Is it this:

John you are most correct!! This is how most deer hunters would carry their Winchester lever actions. In the case I posted the shooter was holding the shotgun by the wrist of the shotgun.

1. If the shooter was holding it as illustrated, how is he breaking the 170?

2. If the shooter was holding the open SxS by the "wrist", were the barrels pointed straight down?

3. What "new SASS rules"??

Around here a long gun in hand requires both hands on the gun. It can be up to the shoulder. Don't see how this guy was holding it to have the muzzle break 170.

Maybe somehow like that? Then, you're likely to break the 170

Why would anyone want to start holding a shotgun in that manner? By choice, I mean.

My calibrated B) eyeballs say that the barrel is around 45 degrees, not close to the 170.

Or, if his head is 0 and toes are 180, then about 140 degrees.

Still need to know exactly how the shooter had his SG held.

It's all about the muzzle direction.   A one-hand carry with the arm straight down and the muzzle within the 170 deg down range direction is perfectly safe.

As you can see, not a lot of folks remember from hunter safety class what "Trail Carry" really is.

good luck, GJ

THAT is an ELBOW carry.  Not a trail carry, and not legal for SASS use.

Perhaps the original poster will let us know if the shooter's shotgun was positioned like any of the pictures. Unless we know that, we're not going to be able to give a true answer.
