Favorite Old West

"Cowtown" in Wichita, KS is pretty good. Lots to see and do and is staffed with volunteers, entertainers and historians. It's an interactive living Old West town.

However my favorites are real ghost towns...  generally located in Colorado, many accessible by 4WD vehicle only. Some great towns there are Ashcroft, Animas Forks, Carson, the Bonanza townsite, Winfield and Vicksburg, and Tincup. (Active residences in Tincup and seasonal in Vicksburg). St Elmo and the surrounding area is also fascinating with a rich mining history combined with Jeep trails, camping, some seasonal tourism and plenty of ghost town stories and locals will say, a few ghosts. Plenty of remnants of towns throughout the Colorado Rockies that are mostly just mining structures, tailings and footings left but if you know the history they can be a ton of fun.

This is a tough one!

I think Virginia City NV is the one I'd most like to go back to and see again.

Tombstone is the one I've been to the most, I like that they have Allen street closed to motor vehicles.

Of the ones I haven't been to, the Kansas cities are high on my list (Abilene and Dodge City most specifically).

The one that I find the most disappointing is Deadwood, it's become a casino town and today casino="slot machine room", the modern slot machines kill the atmosphere for me.

I’d like to see Dodge City, Queen of the cowtowns!

You might be disappointed. I've been to Dodge and been through Dodge on many occasions traveling. It's not so much an Old West town anymore as it is a beef packing town with the smell of money to go with it. Front Street in Dodge is smaller than you might think and even though I love the Old West Dodge doesn't have much appeal to me.

Your time would probably be better spent looking at Old Tucson or Tombstone or Old Trail Town up around Cody, Wyoming. All these are on my to-do list as is Bodie, CA if'n I ever get that far West.

Cowtown in Wichita is much larger than Front Street in Dodge. They put on events throughout the year which are quite fun and well done.

We went through the old town museum there and were very pleased.

Dodge City was disappointing to me....

Tombstone  -  even my wife likes to visit!

Virginia City  - I needed much more time.

Bent's Old Fort in La Junta CO is a very good re-creation.   Well staffed with knowledgeable folks.

Tobar, NV, Montello, NV, Wells, NV. Quail Creek, UT. Tobar is pretty much gone foundations mostly.  Montello is still a cowboy town 3 bars, 1 resonant 60 people.  Quail Creek a little store maybe fuel. Wells, full service a little of old town survives.

Ten Sleep Wy is darn nice

But there’s really so many nice places

I always liked Centennial and Encampment Wy for their proximity to the Snowy Range

Dubois is a nice quiet town

I like Sundance as well

But I’ve driven through a ton more. I think I could settle in Ten Sleep Wy or Lewistown Mt though

I concur wholeheartedly.

I once flew to Dodge City just to make a proficiency flight. There was a feedlot at the end of the runway. When I slid the canopy back, wheeeooo, the aroma was overwhelming.

The only “old west” thing was a poorly done replica of Front Street in another part of town. You could see the whole thing in 5 minutes or less.

My favorite was probably Columbia, CA.  Great Stage Coach ride and the Wells Fargo office was still a working one at the time (also was used in Pale Rider!).

Runner ups include Coloma, Sutter Creek and Jackson, all in CA; the later two have fun 'main streets'.

Others I've been to include Bodie, CA, Rhyolite, NV, Goldfield, NV, Goodsprings, NV, Chloride, AZ, Oatman, AZ, and Tombstone, AZ, but I can't say I'd want to go back to any of these.

I'd like to see Bent's Fort one of these days.

We have a number of frontier towns in Missouri that predate then ones mentioned.  They still have some of the original buildings and artifacts.  St. Joseph comes to mind with start of Pony Express and Jesse James death house.  Outside Liberty Missouri is Jesse James family home. It has museum and tour.  Arrow Rock was a trading center on Missouri River held festivals several times a year until covid shut them down.  Daniel Boone family farm. Also original grave site.
