The way that was written was kind of dumb.

"Lee Trevino, a professional golfer..."

Now, if you did not know Lee Trevino was a professional golfer, you most likely did not know he was Mexican. And it was him being Mexican that made the joke work.

I mean, hell. If I was cutting my front yard I doubt if someone would stop and ask if I spoke English.

So whoever wrote that to post on the net should have mentioned he was Mexican. Makes the joke work better.

To be a bit pedantic, Lee Trevino is not Mexican. He is American, being born and raised in the United States.  He is of Mexican-American descent.

i've known people who might have driven in face first. College psychology professor and one of the founders of MENSA for instance

Just because people are "well educated" or "intelligent" doesn't mean that they're smart.

I would change “they’re smart” to “they have common sense.”

A lot of people are very "smart" in a very limited sphere of subjects...and dumber than a box of rocks in most others.  There are many exceptions, but not enough to make it common place.

When Einstein was at Princeton, they used to have a "handler", for want of a better term, follow him around so that he didn't get lost. And he got lost a lot, especially when he was on his way home.

Now you know why Einstein was such a genius. His mind wasn't cluttered up with mundane things like how to get across campus, where his house was, or his own phone number. This left room for things like General Relativity.
