Flag at Matches

Silver Rings SASS # 27466

Recommended Posts

When I went to my first cowboy match in 1997, they had the US flag flying and did the Pledge of Allegiance. That was the first time I had been any where in decades that did the Pledge. I found it to be a very emotional experience. I have really appreciated and enjoyed having the flag displayed and doing the Pledge at all the matches I have been to.

For several years now I have been running the matches at my local club and take great pride in displaying the flag and leading the Pledge.

Do the matches you go to fly the flag and say the Pledge?

Every one. Monthly, club annual, state, or higher. SASS members take that honor seriously. We won't not do it.

Back in grammar school we used to say the Pledge of Allegiance every morning. I think kindergarten through probably third grade. When I joined SASS and started cowboy action shooting as an adult I started doing it again. I thought it was awesome then and I think it is awesome every time I do it today.

Only now is an adult I have a pretty doggone good idea of what the Pledge of Allegiance means as opposed to when I was a kid. No indoctrination back then, just good habit. And a few of us turned out to be pretty decent adults too. :)

The Flag flies high.   The Pledge is rendered.

Veterans salute and those Cowboys wearing a military style outfit also salute, whether Blue belly or Reb.

And then the Prayer.

I haven't been to a match yet that didn't say the pledge and start with a prayer.

I have never been to a match yet that didn't do the pledge. Nobody told me at first that veterans leave their hats on, so I took it off until I learned to keep it on. I've never been to a match yet that has said a prayer, though, and I'd prefer to keep it that way.

I'm confused by that last comment. Would me praying before a match affect you in some way? My best friend claims to be an atheist. When we have prayer he just stands there quietly.

It might affect me because it complicates things. I find some sweeps to be rather confusing. If you throw in praying and the fact that there are well over a thousand gods, it gets to be quite confusing. Then I have to decide which one to pray to that might give me a competitive advantage. Then how do I pray? Would people think it was weird if I busted out a mat and started kneeling east? Or meditated? Besides, I already belong to the church of Colt and pray to the god of BP. That's enough for me

I don't think TC is asking you to pray he's referring to him saying a prayer. I've been at quite a few matches where a preacher says a prayer during the opening ceremony and no one cares even those that aren't religious. Why get your lacey pink ones in a wad because someone else has a different belief system than yours. I've seen comements of yours before directed at people of faith and wonder how you'd react if they made the same kind of comments about your atheism, but as we all know now being offended is a one way street now days.

Mr. Lose, you hit that nail dead center.

Might comments was really meant to be tongue and check. It wouldn't bother me if someone or even everyone said a prayer. It would if it was required like the pledge is. If a group decided to pray and those that didn't were free to walk away and start preparing for the day then there's no problem. It isn't just about being atheist. Think of just the major sects of Christianity alone. Should Catholics be forced to pray under a Baptist preacher?

Yep, I'd never expect anyone to participate; just ask that those that don't, please walk quietly away while I do. I would never try and force my beliefs on anyone.

Also to adress your comment regarding prayer rugs facing East; I don't care, I will quietly ignore them and go about my business.

It's a free country do as you please, I'll be praying for all, especially those that don't believe in anything.

Howdy Silver Rings,

Hoping to finish up house chores and come on down to your match sunday.

I have been to quite a few matches and all say the pledge and most say some sort of prayer. It has been my honor to lead the prayer at TMS quite a few times. Have never had anyone object and those who choose not to participate simply stand quietly until done. Do not know of anyone who wants to make themselves into a big hairy deal or change others to their viewpoint (either way) but their opinions do not affect me or my beliefs so why should mine affect theirs?

BTW I depend on the skills my Creator gave me that I have practiced repeatedly to get through a match, I am pretty sure He does not care one way or the other if I have a miss or procedural so prayer for good shooting is sorta like prayer before a physics test that you did not study for:D

Regards

Cool, we agree on something.

BTW, if you ever make it to a match at Wartrace, we will wrap you in a Confederate Flag, throw you in our jail at the range and read bible scriptures to you until you willingly repeat the Lord's prayer.

I'm kidding, I will shake your hand and we'll make big ol clouds of black smoke together.

We always say the pledge at all of our local matches..

I do sign-ups at The Outlaws where I am a TG. One time, I was squaring away sign-up stuff and when I got to the shooter's meeting, the President asked me if I had any TG stuff to relay. I said, "Aren't we going to do the pledge?" He said, we already did. Secretly, that put my "panties in a wad." We had an agreement that meetings would not start without the people at sign-up. I used to have a helper, the Secretary, and her husband "read the riot act" to the President for starting without us.

So, I could say, showing respect for our flag and country is important to me.

Some time ago I attended a larger match in my region and I was pleasantly surprised to see and hear one of our fellow cowboys sing the national anthem. (This is in addition to  the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance.) Not only does this fella have a fine singing voice but the idea of the national anthem before one of our matches struck me as the absolutely perfect way to begin our cowboy adventurizing. Classy and patriotic.

Not sure when it became okay for Vets to keep their hats on and salute but I was taught that unless you are in uniform as a member of the armed forces you remove your hat and cover your heart. I would feel weird otherwise.

Ar Every match I have ever been to we have said the pledge of allegiance followed by a hearty YEEHAW!. :FlagAm:

Excellent. Next time I'm out that way again, I'll be there and you can wrap whatever flag you want around me. When in Rome.......

While I'm at it, if anyone has a general Lee Dodge Charger, I'd be most grateful if they'd let me drive it. One of my bucket list dreams. What? I never claimed I wasn't part hypocrite.
