Texas Lizard Posted February 2, 2016 Posted February 2, 2016 Right now I think the only way to carry any shotgun shells is on the belt when shooting...Is there any other ways we are aloud??? Double checking my information to make sure my thinking is right...I guess carrying them loose in a bag on you hip is not the way...
Tyrel Cody Posted February 2, 2016 Posted February 2, 2016 Pg 11 of the shooters handbook: Ammunition required for loading/reloading during the course of any stage must be carried on the shooters person in a bandoleer, cartridge/shotshell belt loop, pouch, holster, or pocket or be safely staged as required by stage instructions. Leather belt slide ammo loops are acceptable; however, shotgun shell slides may not be worn over shotgun loops on an ammo belt. Shotgun loops must be in a single row. Rifle and revolver ammunition may not be carried in a shotshell loop. No ammunition may be carried in the mouth, ears, nose, cleavage, or any other bodily orifice.

"a tobacco pouch" synonyms: bag, purse, sack, sac, pocket "a leather pouch" Let me reword this...Bird hunters carry a box of shells in leather carrier on the blt...It will hold one box of shotgun ammo....Something like this http://www.basspro.com/RedHead-Classic-Utility-Shell-Bag/product/1305291216/?cmCat=CROSSSELL_PRODUCT
PaleWolf Brunelle, #2495L Posted February 2, 2016 Posted February 2, 2016 RT*M. The definition of "pouch" allows anything from a belt-mounted pocket to saddlebags to a briefcase on a shoulder strap...as long as it complies with the basic regulations Any kind of loading block or tray inside a pouch is specifically prohibited.
Springfield Slim SASS #24733 Posted February 2, 2016 Posted February 2, 2016 Pouches are fine, just slow.
Texas Lizard Posted February 2, 2016 Author Posted February 2, 2016 Pouches are fine, just slow. I'm already slow...Just means slower...But the hands might get to them faster and not loose them along the way....Nimble fingers not what the use to be...
ShadowCatcher Posted February 2, 2016 Posted February 2, 2016 For a number of years I carried a shoulder slung suede pouch with shotgun shells in it - frankly it was as fast as I was, and it was dirt cheap too, as I was! Works fine if you're not in a rush, and in the real world, if I was setting out to hunt with my shotgun for rabbits or birds, it would work fine. It's not all lord of the manor fancy, but then neither am I! SC
Tom Bullweed Posted February 2, 2016 Posted February 2, 2016 TL, the SASS gives a wide range of options for carrying shells, but there are very few shooters in the category winner who use anything other than a dedicated shotshell belt. Bandoliers, shell slides on the pistol belt, pouches, and other legal options may look cool, a lot of pratice will be required to beat the proven shell belt.
Chili Ron Posted February 2, 2016 Posted February 2, 2016 Howdy, how can you pass up the chance to wear a big bad bandolear? 12 gauge shells across the chest? How cool is that. Best CR
Cheyenne Ranger, 48747L Posted February 2, 2016 Posted February 2, 2016 I'm seeing a picture now white scrubs crossed bandoleers Sombrero leather sandals badges? We don't need no stinkin' badges! cr
Mud Marine,SASS#54686 Life Posted February 3, 2016 Posted February 3, 2016 Bandoleers tend to slip, especially as shells are removed. Heavy cartridge belts and bandoleers look awesome but they suck for CAS!
Yul Lose Posted February 3, 2016 Posted February 3, 2016 Bandoleers tend to slip, especially as shells are removed. Heavy cartridge belts and bandoleers look awesome but they suck for CAS! I use one as do quite a few shooters that I shoot with on a regular basis and the bandoleers work out quite well. Mine is lined with suede so the slip factor has been eliminated. My bandoleer is made by Tombstone Leather and he sells quite a few of them.
Injun Ryder, SASS #36201L Posted February 3, 2016 Posted February 3, 2016 TL - Knowing you, I would imagine that any way that is most convenient and safe for you would be allowed in any match. If I were the MD, I would allow a pouch to be mounted where you could easily access it.
PaleWolf Brunelle, #2495L Posted February 3, 2016 Posted February 3, 2016 I'm thinking that there are plenty of LEGAL options available without having to resort to any method that would require MD "special dispensation".

Not trying to make easy, just might shooting a10 ga...Don't have shell holder belt for that size...Did not think threw this problem so enough to make the changes needed...Might go back to the 12 and not worry about... Noz Posted February 3, 2016 Posted February 3, 2016 Shoot the 10! Too cool to not use. Carry your ammo in shirt, vest or coat pockets.

Snakebite Posted February 3, 2016 Posted February 3, 2016 "Pouches shall have a flap and must carry their contents loose, with no special provisions to organize the contents for rapid retrieval." Don't forget the "Flap".... gotta have a flap.
Snakebite Posted February 3, 2016 Posted February 3, 2016 Since we are talking about shotgun shell carry, Loose shells in a pocket or pouch are aligned in every conceivable direction. Shells carried in a bandoleer are lying at rest in various directions. Shells that are carried in a slide or belt that follows the shooter's contour are at various angles to the vertical. 1. Must shells carried in a shotshell loop be carried with the Brass in the upright position? In other words.. Can they be inserted upside down into the bottom end of the loop, with the brass on the Ground side? (Pull up to remove vs pull down to remove) I see folks carrying shells in both the up and down position... inserting one in the top and one in the bottom of loops. Is this OK? 2. Must shells being carried in a shotshell loops be carried only in loops that are vertical? In other words... no loops that are at any angle between 0-90 degrees. I see folks carrying shells in shotshell loops that position the shells in the horizontal plane.... i.e. pull out from the left or right rather than pull up or down. Is this OK? (sorry, it needed to be ask)

(sorry, it needed to be ask) #1 Is legal as there is no advantage to pulling them down, then raising them up to put in the chamber. #2 Is NOT legal SASS SHB Page 11 Shotgun ammo loops must conform to the shooters contour (i.e., not tilt out from the belt). If you're talking about horizontally mounted shotshells that run parallel to the body, I don't think you could carry enough to make a full stage in one row of shells and, as Page 11 also points out "Shotgun loops must be in a single row." Also, for bandoliers, You can attach your big heavy knife to the bottom of the bandolier, fill the bottom loops with 10 gauge brass shells and the upper ones with your 12 gauge loads. This keeps the bandolier in the proper position and meets the requirements of not being tied down.
El Hombre Sin Nombre Posted February 3, 2016 Posted February 3, 2016 I use one as do quite a few shooters that I shoot with on a regular basis and the bandoleers work out quite well. Mine is lined with suede so the slip factor has been eliminated. My bandoleer is made by Tombstone Leather and he sells quite a few of them. That's exactly what I use and it's just as you say. They only time mine slips is if we're shooting a stage with 10+ shotgun and lots of movement. Then I get both the lessening of weight to hold it down and lots of moving around to let it slip a bit. Maybe I'll try that knife on the bottom method. The only downside is it doesn't work as well for me using my 87. Shells are kind of in an awkward place to load that way. At least for me. Works great for doubles though.

I use a bandoleer & shoot a double - shells are within inches of the chamber when I first grab them. Can't work from a belt no matter how hard I try. If a bandoleer flops around while you're pulling the shells, you're doing something wrong. CR
