cowboy 45 powder

Texas Jack Black

Recommended Posts

I am starting to get ready to emerge after my back fusion and I have several powders in multiples  what would be a  good load for  a cowboy 45 case  with a 160 gr. RNFP.?

I thank You

I have used 2F and 3F granulations from Swiss, Goex, Schuetzen, and Elephant, all with satisfactory results for our game.  About 15 grains of any of these would be good for the 45 Cowboy Special cartridge. For precision shooting there is only one, Swiss. Just my opinion.

I do use Black when  loading my early Colts and Winchesters. I also watch your videos  very enjoyable.

I've been using 4.2gr Clays or Clay-Dot for that 160gr. pill in C45S. Currently trying CleanShot, at 4.4gr It milder than the Clays load, but leaves a yellow/gold debris which seems harmless, but I find it a tad distracting as I can see it come out the muzzle! When it warms up in a few months, I'll experiment some more. Cleanshot can be had by our great supporter Scarlett Darlin and others. Clays seems to be currently unobtanium.

I shot 4Gr TightGroup for years before becoming Enlightened to the Dark.  Were I shooting TightGroup today, I'd be shooting 160Gr Coated bullets from Scarlett.  Or Missouri Bullet Co.

I'm shooting BullsEye right now, have shot WST, Clays, ClayDot, RedDot and TiteGroup.   All work fine.  It's just a gallery load, and not even an accuracy target load.  Most anything works.  GJ

I've loaded the two Accurate powders for other purposes.  They are slower burning powders than I would choose for CAS.  You are fortunate to have your powder stash.  Supplies are still spotty and prices horrible.

4.2 grains BE with 160 to 180 grain bullets is fine.  I use a 175 grain TC conventional lube myself - cheap and easy to make.

I didn't like 4.0 grains TG - had to get to about 4.5 grains to suit me for consistent performance and cleaner cases.

Been shooting for over 50 years and always stay well supplied.

With the 160 pill from Badman, I've been loading 3.4 grains of Clays set off by a WLP primer for years.  Winter, Spring, Summer & Fall, from WA to FL, TX to MI, not a whit of variance, shoots about the same.

I don't believe it!  He has Unique, but Lumpy suggested 231!  :o

Because Unique is special right now. Best powder in the bunch. I'm saving mine just for my little girls shotshells.

Look at .45acp load data.

I have always used 231 in my .45acp loads.

231 was developed especially for the .45 acp cartridge.

The C45S is almost identical to the 45 Autorim. Speer doesn't have a listing for a 160-grain bullet. But they list the minimum charge for Unique for a 200-grain bullet as 5.0 and the maximum as 5.5 grains. I would try the 5.0 and see how you like it.

I've been using Win 244 (.38 Spec) but it has applications for .45 Auto.  I'd use it there if I was loading C45S.  Seems to be quite available.  You might look at it.
