Tom Bullweed Posted August 10, 2024 Posted August 10, 2024 3/8" polytube cut to 1-3/4" and stopped with a 3/8" Dia poplar plug. 1.6 cc of Pyrodex FFFg (about 26 grains by volume. .454 round ball Let's go shootin' some Piette q851 Navies!
Griff Posted August 11, 2024 Posted August 11, 2024 Who needs speed loaders...😆 ...that oughta been enough to fight my way to the rifle that you load on Sunday and shoot all week!
watab kid Posted August 11, 2024 Posted August 11, 2024 interesting - always looking for a faster more efficient way , thanks or the suggestion ,Â
Captain Bill Burt Posted August 11, 2024 Posted August 11, 2024 On the very rare occasions I shoot C&B I use paper cartridges, which are also pretty quick to load.
Colorado Coffinmaker Posted August 11, 2024 Posted August 11, 2024 IN EUROPE there is a real nifty "Speed Loader" for Cap Guns. Â Six chambers all at once. Â Shotgun Boogie Gunworks carries 'em. Â I have always considered "Speed Loading" for Cap Guns to be Oxymoron. Â Speed Loading is grabbing another fully charged Cap Gun.

Those Europeans are ahead of us in C&B gadgets. Probably because most can't own cartridge guns. Seeing what they did inspired me to develop the 6 30-30 cases on a washer trick.  Here is the setup I used in one match. Centrifuge tubes work well to pre-measure powder.
Prairie Dawg, SASS #50329 Posted August 11, 2024 Posted August 11, 2024 "speed loaders for cap guns" have been around for most of the time I've been shooting them (40+ years). Most of the ones I've seen in the past are like the vials Lucky refers to, or the plastic ones the Warden shows in his post. Everybody eventually finds a system that works for them, and frequently, they are pretty different. The point is that they all work, so find what works for you, & go with it. Over the years, I've tried most of them, but in the end, I settled on an off-gun cylinder loader (Powder Inc), Lee dippers, and a tin of lubed felt wads & round balls. Generally, I could wipe down the guns, & get them reloaded (while watching the unloading table) in 2-3 shooters. New shooters frequently look for ways to speed things up. It's more important to shoot them often enough to develop a routine that you can do without too much thinking about it, IMHO.  Everybody gets there eventually -- Some take longer than others! So......Find your way & run with it! --Dawg Â

Painted Mohawk SASS 77785 Posted August 12, 2024 Posted August 12, 2024 Just a plain ole' flask works for me...
Colorado Coffinmaker Posted August 12, 2024 Posted August 12, 2024 Â BIG PLUS ONE for Prairie Dawg!! Â I settled on self made dippers and the Tower of Power cylinder loading stand. Â With familiarity it doesn't take long at all.
Erasmus Posted August 12, 2024 Posted August 12, 2024 I use an off gun cylinder loader and (most frequently) a flask with a 20 grain spout.  Sometimes, if I'm feeling plucky, I'll pre-charge a bunch of .38 cases with 20 grains a piece, put them in an MTM cartridge box, lay a piece of foam over the top of them, and use the lid to compress the foam to seal the charged brass.  No matter what the routine is the same however. Eventually I'll have 12 cylinders, but not right now.Â
Tom Bullweed Posted August 12, 2024 Author Posted August 12, 2024 More than speed, the pre-loaded charger is about not having to measure loads on the stage. It was high-humidity and hot this past Saturday for a heat index of 104. Having pre-measured loads that could be dumped in the chambers was a thing that I did not have to consider.
H. K. Uriah, SASS #74619 Posted August 12, 2024 Posted August 12, 2024 Ever since I saw one on the cover of Guns of the Old West, I've wanted a Paterson converted to .38 S&W...

Rusty Mustang Posted September 19, 2024 Posted September 19, 2024 Back when I used to work on turbines, we had an inline fuel filter that came in little plastic tubes that just happened to be big enough to hold a charge for my Pietta Confederate Navy. More than a few of them made it home with me rather than the garbage can. Â Now, I just use wide rolling papers and make a cartridge. Â Which, this reminds me, I haven't shot that pistol all year. Will have to fix that soon. Â v/r, Â Rusty
Abilene, SASS # 27489 Posted September 19, 2024 Posted September 19, 2024 If you shoot a Paterson, you could use one of these: Â
Dapper Dave Posted September 19, 2024 Posted September 19, 2024 Spare cylinder for the NMA works, but the only fast way of loading C&B I am familiar with is the paper cartridge. They worked pretty well. Even tried dipping in home made lube - that did not work as well as I had hoped, will use SPG next time I get around to them. Funny enough, the CCI Shotshell holder can carry 10 of them, if you put them in carefully enough. I decided to just go the faster route and went with a conversion cylinder instead, but the C&B cylinder is still in the box, waiting...  Â
Pee Wee #15785 Posted September 20, 2024 Posted September 20, 2024 When shooting 3-4 weekends a month I loaded off the flask with cylinder on gun. Â I could be ready by 2-3 average shooters watching unloading table. Â That would allow for spotting or what was needed. Â Get started shooting, the speed will come

I usually work the unloading table while I am recharging cylinders. Develop a routine and stick to it.Â
