Especially the Women's Beach Volleyball! The Kayak Slalom was amazing to watch. And an interesting comparison of the difference in how men and women approach the same sport. Requires amazing upper body strength, but it seems to me that the women more finesse the course while the men aggressively ATTACK the course. Badminton is insanely quick. I think a much much more difficult game than tennis. It might not require as much strength, but DANG! it's fast.

At least, I'll watch the events that interest me ~ and perhaps "peek in" on a few others. I enjoy good athletic competitions; the debacles of the opening ceremonies (and as @Subdeacon Joe pointed out, it was only a small part of the ceremony) were not the fault of the competitors. And THEY should not be made to sacrifice their years of hard work because of some misguided sponsors or organizers (or politicians*!). *Under order of then President Jimmy Carter, the U. S. boycotted the 1980 Moscow olympics. I worked with a fella who was on the Track and Field team - don't recall which discipline - who had worked for years to make the team. He was downright disgusted. Now, there was a reference above to new "non-traditional" sports. Again, folks can do like I do - watch those that interest you, and ignore the others. Regarding "new" or "traditional" sports, I'd remind all that there have been a BUNCH of historic events that no longer exist; these include such "time honored" sports as steeplechase... standing high jump... 100-meter running deer and dueling pistol shooting events... and dozens of others. As long as they don't allow any Lia Thomas's, I'm okay with the "O's." The title of the thread is Olympic Opening Ceremonies, I didn’t say one word about the competition itself and have been watching a few events. Bicycle racing on those slick streets is treacherous and kudos to those athletes that go down hard and come back to finish the races.

Forty Rod SASS 3935
I remember when The Olympics were based on "military" type events: running, throwing spears and rocks, gymnastics, fighting, jumping, wrestling, track and field, weight lifting, horsemanship (Oh I'll just bet that was considered sexist...equinepeopleship), swimming, etc. I'm waiting now for something involving pedicures or hairdos. Maybe a challenging event on flower arranging. Edited July 28 by Forty Rod SASS 3935

The Olympic committee is having to apologize because they called the South Koreans - the Republic of Korea - the North Koreans - the Democratic People's Republic of Korea. https://www.yahoo.com/news/olympics-apologize-colossal-mistake-opening-152248043.html Can you say "oops"? Red Eye Jim
I only caught a little bit of the opening ceremonies during my lunch break and all I could think of was "Why is the guy from Assassin's Creed carrying the torch?" Although, I did think having teams come down the river in boats was something new, rather than just walking into a stadium.

Likewise, I have no idea what transvestite portrayal of The Last Supper to do with the Olympics. The reason I can see for the disgusting portrayal, was to attempt to influence children and younger people into their 'way of life' as many children/young people from all over the World were watching. That in itself is grooming in my opinion. I won't be watching the Olympics, but not because of a disgusting portrayal of The Last Supper although that would be enough to me to be the proverbial 'last straw'. I haven't watched the Olympics ever since they started letting in many of the (so called) sports that have nothing to do with Olympic sports in the traditional manner. It's not about the games anymore and hasn't been for many years now. The only thing it's about now is MONEY and lots of it. It's too bad, I used to enjoy the games back in the day...not now. If the Olympics is about money, it's really terrible at it. The data show that hosting the olympics generally cost the city that hosts a fortune and that it is basically never repaid by the event itself or resulting tourism. The olympics very well ought to be a proud moment if they're held in your city, because you'll be paying for it for decades after that.
