Olympic Opening Ceremonies

Badminton and skateboarding I can see being dumped for the Olympics, the rest I like!

Especially the Women's Beach Volleyball!

The Kayak Slalom was amazing to watch.  And an interesting comparison of the difference in how men and women approach the same sport.  Requires amazing upper body strength, but it seems to me that the women more finesse the course while the men aggressively ATTACK the course.

Badminton is insanely quick.  I think a much  much more difficult game than tennis.  It might not require as much strength, but DANG! it's fast.

I'll watch!  At least, I'll watch the events that interest me ~ and perhaps "peek in" on a few others.

I enjoy good athletic competitions; the debacles of the opening ceremonies (and as @Subdeacon Joe pointed out, it was only a small part of the ceremony) were not the fault of the competitors.  And THEY should not be made to sacrifice their years of hard work because of some misguided sponsors or organizers (or politicians*!).

*Under order of then President Jimmy Carter, the U. S. boycotted the 1980 Moscow olympics.  I worked with a fella who was on the Track           and Field team - don't recall which discipline - who had worked for years to make the team.  He was downright disgusted.

Now, there was a reference above to new "non-traditional" sports.  Again, folks can do like I do - watch those that interest you, and ignore the others.  Regarding "new" or "traditional" sports, I'd remind all that there have been a BUNCH of historic events that no longer exist; these include such "time honored" sports as steeplechase... standing high jump... 100-meter running deer and dueling pistol shooting events... and dozens of others.

As long as they don't allow any Lia Thomas's, I'm okay with the "O's."

The title of the thread is Olympic Opening Ceremonies, I didn’t say one word about the competition itself and have been watching a few events. Bicycle racing on those slick streets is treacherous and kudos to those athletes that go down hard  and come back to finish the races.

Maybe the next Olympic opening ceremony they can have drag queens act out  throwing individuals in stereotypical Mideast garb off of the roofs of buildings and call it parody and satire. City would be burning in minutes….

I remember when The Olympics were based on "military" type events: running, throwing spears and rocks, gymnastics, fighting, jumping, wrestling, track and field, weight lifting, horsemanship (Oh I'll just bet that was considered sexist...equinepeopleship), swimming, etc.

I'm waiting now for something involving pedicures or hairdos.  Maybe a challenging event on flower arranging.

Watching the men’s basketball a little bit! Looks like a good game but I’m not going to watch the whole thing. I have to get outside for a while!

Samurai were expected to be not just warriors on the field of battle but to write poetry, prose and arrange flowers or create artwork as cultured aristocrats.

Not all martial skills are violent

George Washington wore a wig, high heels and stocking tights.

He was also an accomplished general.

I have not watched the Olympics since Olga Korbut.

But I saw this in the news this morning. The Olympic committee is having to apologize because they called the South Koreans - the Republic of Korea - the North Koreans - the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.

Can you say "oops"?

I'm having to force myself to watch Women's Beach Volleyball!

The horror!

I watched the US / Canada match yesterday - outstanding athleticism!  The US team of 5' 6" Kristen Nuss and 6' 4" Taryn Kloth was quite impressive.

Obviously it's the athleticism of the ladies and their lightening-fast reflexes.

I watched Netherlands v. Lithuania today.  One of the Lithuania players is 6' 51/2"

I only caught a little bit of the opening ceremonies during my lunch break and all I could think of was "Why is the guy from Assassin's Creed carrying the torch?"

Although, I did think having teams come down the river in boats was something new, rather than just walking into a stadium.

Interesting that you mention a horse.

That mechanical horse was pretty darned cool.   Same for the entrance to the stadium and the flag bearers falling in behind the real horses.

So, mostly weird (I did like Lady Gaga, and the body suit in the fashion show) the first 3 hours, but this might pull it up to an overall C+.

my wife thought so too , i was ok with it , but all that gay/trans crap not so much , i get it that its in france and they always think they are way advanced in certain areas of culture but sorry - im not impressed , maybe the rain was an omen ?????

i enjoyed watching a few events - always do - but a couple not so much , that rugby with the french and tahiti , sorry i dont get that and it was not all that impressive to me , but luckily we dont all think alike im sure there are some that really liked it ,

the diving gets two thumbs up and the swimming as well , the gymnastics are always fun except when things go wrong

“Paris 2024 spokeswoman Anne Descamps said: “It is clear that there was never any intention to show disrespect to any religious group”

Speaking at a press conference on Sunday, Ms Descamps added: “I think (with artistic director) Thomas Jolly, we really did try to celebrate community tolerance.”

“Looking at the result of the polls that we shared, we believe that this ambition was achieved. If people have taken any offence we are, of course, really, really sorry.”

Mr Jolly, however, defended the flamboyant scene and told French media: “You will never find in my work a desire to denigrate anyone or anything.”

This is all horse shit, ya know….

I have given little to zero of my attention to the politically motivated  biennial obscure sporting event extravaganza since I was young enough to not know that it was just another form of bread and circuses on a global scale...

No, but all of them required some physical skills and coordination, none were some of the crap I see (or don't see because I won't watch it these days).

Pole vaulting, skiing, most gymnastics, figure skating, and others have no violence involved.

I have no idea what murder, political assassination (attempted or accomplished), a former president or the Final Solution has to do with the Olympics. Likewise, I have no idea what transvestite portrayal of The Last Supper to do with the Olympics. The reason I can see for the disgusting portrayal, was to attempt to influence children and younger people into their 'way of life' as many children/young people from all over the World were watching. That in itself is grooming in my opinion.

I won't be watching the Olympics, but not because of a disgusting portrayal of The Last Supper although that would be enough to me to be the proverbial 'last straw'. I haven't watched the Olympics ever since they started letting in many of the (so called) sports that have nothing to do with Olympic sports in the traditional manner. It's not about the games anymore and hasn't been for many years now. The only thing it's about now is MONEY and lots of it. It's too bad, I used to enjoy the games back in the day...not now.

If the Olympics is about money, it's really terrible at it.  The data show that hosting the olympics generally cost the city that hosts a fortune and that it is basically never repaid by the event itself or resulting tourism.  The olympics very well ought to be a proud moment if they're held in your city, because you'll be paying for it for decades after that.

Please notice, I never stated that the host city was the one making the money...think IOC among others.;)

IOC for sure, all the TV coverage all around the world has to bring in a ton of advertising money. TV networks are raking it in big time. It's NBC here I don't know about other countries!
