EOT Gatling guns

Recommended Posts

I've never been to End of Trail but I remember a similar event long prior to the establishment of SASS.  When I was  little boy back in the 1950s, my dad was a competitor in the North-South Skirmish Association.  I can remember going with him to an event at Camp Perry, Ohio.  Like it was yesterday I can remember a stack of potato chip cans filled with water being set up downrange, and then a Gatling Gun, probably in 45-70 cut loose on the stack.  The hydraulic pressure from those big slugs hitting the cans just ruptured the cans right down the seam.

The Sargent's used to bring assorted weaponry to EOT. In the three years I attended, all in New Mexico, I fired a 308 version (smokeless), a 45-70 version (BP) and a Mountain Howitzer. These guys were to official armorer for R. Lee Ermey on that show he did, Lock and Load.

T-Bone had one in a stage one time at Bar-3 that had been altered to use 45 Colt.  Goody, you may remember.  I believe it was set-up at  the moving rail cart stage.  The platform and rail car now gone and we have our legendary chicken stage,  CBeau's Chicken Shack.

I shot one at Winter Range one year. You could hear it from the stages. Went down and checked it out. They explained how it worked.  Offered the chance to shoot it for $1 a round. At first I  declined, then thought when am I going to get the chance to shoot one? Paid 20 or 30 dollars and shot it. Loved it.

Several years back we did some serious damage to a $100 bill while at Winter Range.   For your shooting pleasure there was a Gatling gun and a Civil War type cannon. I still remember cranking away those 45-70's in black and  loading what seemed to be in line with a bowling ball.  Great fun for a great cause.  I believe it was for the Make A Wish Foundation or something similar.  Ahh, if I could only afford one or two......
