We had a customer. Claude was French Canadian. Hell of a nice fella.

 

He called one day and said he wants some work done, and I'm taking down the information. And when it's all done I told him I needed a PO number.

 

"Vairable".

 

What?

 

"Vairable".

 

One more time.

 

"Vairable"!

 

Var-i-a-ble???

 

"VAIRABLE!!! V E R B A"

 

Oh, verbal. Got you.

 

 

I called over there one time and I was talking to the secretary and I asked a question about some work that needed done, and she says, "Let me transfer you to Claude". I asked her if she could answer for me because I could not understand the man on the telephone. Face to face, when I could see what his mouth was trying to say I was about 90% understanding. But on the telephone it was less than 50%.

 

She kind of whispered, "I can't understand him on the phone either".

Thought the group might enjoy this one. This is what happens when a pissed off bull moose in rut decides your cub is it's latest target. I've seen bears tear up planes but had never seen a moose get pissy.

That's why we always carried a few rolls of Duct Tape when we flew on floats with the PA-18 

It came in handy for one of our group when he got blown into some trees on the edge of a lake.

Hard to tax payment for the work as well!!

 

A little off topic: We are seeing more creative barter or exchanges on a quid pro quo here.

It's driving the Canada Revenue Agency (The tax people) crazy, trying to figure out how to catch it and tax the exchange.

I know of a travel agency that had brochures etc. printed.  No $$$$ exchanged, but the shop received two cruise tickets. 

In other instances, stuff given in exchange, given out in lieu of commissions.

We think it has to do with a subtle tax revolt. 

Are you seeing anything similar??

Lots of it in the late 70's in the UK.  My favorite Pub had a back yard garden the Publican wanted lighted.  I recall a conversation about the job cost vs. period of free drinks.  Another time it was plumbing.  Out here neighbors commonly trade work.  Too many things take a number of people and with AG profit margins and the smaller households these days, no other way.  Helpers also get a great meal, ask me how I know!

Starting to see it here again, triggered is seems by the "Carbon Tax".

It really hit a nerve here in Canada, since we are a carbon sink, thanks to our arboreal forests, consuming our own and much of the world's emissions. Meanwhile, the two largest carbon emitters appear to be doing little or nothing and in fact have increased their emissions. 

(And no, I'm not referring to the USA!)

That's because the USA is relatively low on emissions. Highest are probably China and India. Of course, the USA is PAYING for it, but...

I have started doing that myself.  I have a friend that needed some patches sewn on their military uniform for a formal event.  Instead of payment, I told him to buy me lunch some day, or pay it forward.  I have a neighbor that bought a couple of new Gi's and asked me to sew on patches for him.  For payment, I asked for a spool of thread to replace the thread I used on his gi.  The tax man doesn't need any more of my hard earned money.
