Is "thread count" in things like sheets different because the threads are metric sized instead of normal sized?

No, thread sizes are standardized and convertible between measurement systems. But different weaves are used for sheets so the same thread can be in both a 200 and a 400 count sheet.

 

Need to feel the cloth and not just go by marketing claims. Also need to wash it first before feeling it as at the "sizing" (fancy name for thread coating to improve manufacturability) can change how a sheet feels before it is washed out the first time through the laundry.

 

Which means buying them and then finding out...

I was visualizing the kid, squalling, as he went sliding down the frozen surface wearing nothing but a diaper.
