Chili Ron
Howdy Anyone can suggest the champ. But what about a more affordable lighter weight choice. First ya gotta have a magnify glass for lookin at stuff. And a phillinps on one end so you can reach the screws and a corkscrew with the enclosed tiny screwdriver. Chili Ron
Howdy, Conversation with a friend who camps a good bit. He suggested two knives. One could hold items and the other to cut or adjust or whatever. Two smaller ones would also make combinations that would not be on just one knife. Or allow regular size with mini size. Not the worst idea. Best CR
Happy Jack, SASS #20451
For a useable working tool I suggest a Leatherman WAVE. I have a couple of huge Swiss Army knifes. Never take them. A good heavy foldable Benchmade knife and a Leatherman. If you need more a full toolbox is required.

I gave my Swiss Champ to my grandson after 30 years of carrying it in my car or kit and almost never using it. The most useful thing on it was the tooth pick and it broke off after about three years. Pat Riot
My two favorites for pretty much anything, but especially camping are the Victorinox Explorer and the Classic SD mini. And that Spirit multi tool as backup.

Raylan
No longer carry a swiss army knife daily or camping. Daily carry a sling bag with tourniquet in car or on person if walking/hiking - has other emergency medical along with extra batteries for flashlights and phone. The rest is on body for daily carry. Daily carry on body that is useful with camping - Civivi Praxis, CRKT Spew, LAPG swivel head flashlight (magnetic base, rechargable with replaceable 18650 battery, 750 lumens), pepper spray, pistol. In sling bag - Leatherman Surge with bit kit and extension, and AAA olight flashlight. If camping take a fixed blade either a Condor Bushlore or a Morakniv Bushcraft Blackout. Chili Ron
Howdy, All fine but Swiss Army knife is very useful too. I have one with a little scissors and plyers that I use a lot. It opens all sorts of packages and letters too. ymmv Best CR
Raylan
For camping don't think you can beat a decent folding camp saw, cheap and lightweight. Second would be a Estwing Riggers Axe. Third a machette. Never take a machette anymore, mostly a folding saw, rarely the Riggers Axe.

Utah Bob #35998
Depends on the type of camping. For serious backpacking, weight is a factor. I don’t Camp anymore but when I did I carried a Swiss Army Tinker or my old army model 1760. I do not like the “everything but the kitchen sink” knives unless they are included in a survival kit. Some folks have listed their EDC stuff. My EDC is much different from camping gear
Cat Brules
The camper will need: — Big can of Bear Pepper Spray (for human attackers) — 8-inch blade, fixed blade knife — folding pocket knife of some sort — good sized kitchen butcher knife (miscellaneous use) — .357Magnum revolver, with factory ammo (and extra ammo), with crossdraw holster an retention loop Cat Brules

How about the other replies to this topic? are you zeroing in on my reply for any special reason? Okay, my pocket knife is a small, single-bladed Case thumb-opening lockback with a 3”+ slim, pointed blade, Model 3154L, with a chrome vanadium (regular steel) blade, and yellow plastic (or bone?) grip scales. Extremely well-made. You can probably find the same knife and a lot of other good pocket knives, in any Case display at a good hardware store. What else> The champ is much too heavy and bulky. Your smartphone is a much better magnifier than its burning glass. A blade and a saw is all you need on your swiss army knife. Most have can and bottle openers (with a large and small screwdriver), also versatile tools. Scissors can also be helpful (finger nails). Phillips? Nice to have but probably one of the blade screw drivers will fit. As the korkscrew is located on the opposite site of the blades it doesn't need additional space, in other words a must-have! Same for the (sewing) awl. If you wanna have pliers go with the leatherman. I personally prefer my "Ranger" due to its size (grip, blade, saw) and the locking blade, I don't like just slip joints. For something smaller an "Evolution S17" would be nice and sufficient. Directly from Switzerland, Equanimous Phil

Dantankerous
4" or so fixed blade knife. Filet knife. Hatchet. Hand saw. Ax. Sometimes a Stihl chainsaw. We ARE talking vehicle camping, not backpacking, I presume.

Edward R S Canby, SASS#59971
Not to buy: cheap Chinese knockoffs off of any of the products mentioned in this thread. Raylan
If choosing just Swiss Army knives I would go for the S18 in yellow - which I own - like the options of scissors and locking knife blade. Sans scissors would go for the Forester with locking blade.
