Ride on ahead......Cap Roundtree

On September 20, 2020 the Northern California SASS family lost one of our founding members in the passing of Cap Roundtree, aka Michael Gardner. Cap Roundtree was one of the five founding members of the Mad River Rangers of Blue Lake California where we put on eleven annual SASS shoots. It was during those annuals that Cap met so many wonderful folks that eventually became part of his extended family. I am part of that extended family.

Cap was one of those guys that was hard to miss. He was a classic cowboy from the beginning, choosing to shoot original Winchesters that he had resurrected himself. From his huge mustache to his incredible laugh, he was a man to ride the river with.
He was quick to make you a friend, would have your back when you needed it and wouldn’t suffer fools. Opinionated, honest, hard working, he loved shooting, single actions, his 1887 shotgun; but nothing more than his family.

The world lost a one-of-kind. I’ll miss you brother.

"We are saddened to say another Southern Missouri Rangers has passed. David was a club member and always willing to help us with our gun raffle and tickets. We will remember him most for his contribution to 4H shooting. We loved having the Missouri State 4H Cowboy Action Competition on our range and allowing us to work the stages for the kids. Rest In Peace cowboy."

The Illowa Irregulars and the Illinois River City Regulators are sad to report that our long-time friend and competitor, Will Dunn., aka Robert Gauley, passed away on Saturday, May 1, 2021.  Will was a highly competitive shooter, who posted wins in every category in which he competed, often dropping down to a better-supported category, just to take on - and often beat - the "youngsters," even when he was eligible for "El Patron." He was always ready with a good story, or joke -or three- and was hardly ever seen without a smile on his face.  An accomplished amateur gunsmith, Will was always available to help solve a problem for any other competitor, and quietly mentored many of the new shooters who came into our sport.  His laugh, smile, and firm handshake will be missed by all of us.

The photo was taken at Gunsmoke, 2017, when Will won his Regional Championship.  He is pictured with his long-time traveling companion, Fillmore, who passed away in 2019.

It is with much sorrow and sadness that we inform you of the sudden and unexpected passing of Dirty Rotten Ray, SASS #83383 (AKA Jerry Ray).  Dirty Rotten Ray was slated to attend EOT with us this week, and had been assigned to Posse #5.  Following a memorial service for him at our gun range Monday at 1 PM, we will be heading to Etna Green to participate in End of Trail.

While we look forward to the festivities, it will obviously be with a heavy heart.  No one was more looking forward to End of Trail than Dirty Rotten Ray.  He will be with us in thought and in spirit.

Sincerely, The Dirty Rotten Gang

I had not been on this thread in a while and saw just today that Dirty Rotten Ray had passed. Was on the range with him several times

over the years. Shocked to read this. He was a good cowboy, always smiling. We enjoyed being around him.

Fast Harley , and Last Kiss.
