Looking for suggestions on a Long Range "Buffalo Rifle". If possible would like to keep it under $1000.00. Thanks for any suggestions.

Cabelas has two Pedersoli Sharpes rifles. One for 1049 and one for 1099. You may find them cheaper and they are fine rifles. I own one and love it dearly.

There was a TV series and a couple of movies about your quest... it was titled "Mission Impossible!" What you could buy "new" for under that $ amount would only be slightly better than throwing rocks.

Among the foreign manufacturers, Pedersoli has a really good reputation. Some of the BPCR winners have used Pedersoli rifles.

Randingo, if you check the classified forum you might find what you're looking for on occasion. There have been many fine rifles at very reasonable prices in the not to distant past and I'm pretty confident that there will be some in the future. A word to the wise though you better get in there fast or it will be gone. I bought a very nice Browning 1885 HighWall just a couple of weeks ago fo just about the price that you're talking about.

If price is the only concern the RB is the best bang for your buck, unless you get a good deal on a used sharps, highwall, or trapdoor. One option would be gunbroker. They have had quite a few original rolling blocks, some of which seemed to be in pretty good shape. Uberti's RB can get you started for less than 1000, but you wont have the nice sights. If you get an original, just make sure all the parts are there and get pictures of the bore. And make sure you can either reload or buy the ammo as most of them end up being 43 spanish and 11x57R.

The Harrington & Richardson model 1871 buffalo classic can be had with a Smith sight for less that $1k. Mine is fairly light and can be shot offhand if needed. I shoot the rifle in SASS side matches a few time a year.

Get a real Buffalo rifle just like Buffalo Douglas recommends; an original Remington Rolling Block. Plenty are available for well under $1000 in easy to load .45-70 & .50-70. Gives you a practical shooter plus a real piece of history.

The buffalo were mostly gone by the time John Mose designed it and Winchester manufactured it, but the HiWall is a great action. The hammer fall is lighter. The only drawback to it and the rolling block, compared with a Sharps or Trapdodor Springfields is that the hammer on the rolling block and the HiWall are centrally hung, which means they will block your view of the target for followup. That's NOT a real problem if you shoot BP. The smoke will obscure the target after you shoot anyway.

For original Sporting Rifle in a buffalo caliber, i.e. , 50-70, 44-77, etc. get ready to peel off quite a bit more than a grand. Nice examples with special sights or known provenance will cost 4-10 grand or more. That said you can easily get a 50-70 New York Militia rifle or other military converted to 45-70 for a 1000. Don't know whether you've thought about it but a grand will buy a pretty dang nice Trapdoor and there are folks that are very competitive with them.

Buy a Swedish Roller in .50-70 for around 350 put on the sites you want ....

But if you want a better chance of winning buy a Highwall (Uberti)in .40-65 ...

What do you consider long range? If you are talking 600 to 1000 yds then you need a really good rifle. If you are talking 100 to 300 yds cowboy side match a good military rollingblock will do the

job. I have a .43 spanish military rollingblock with excellent barrel that will shoot plenty good enough to be competative with at cowboy long range matches. I bought it a couple of years ago for

under $500 at a gun show. Good rifles are out there if you are patient. My next one will be a 50-70 New York model.

If you want to shoot SASS long range side matches the H&R single shoot in 45-70 will do. They can be had for around $500. Sights are going to get you to $1,000.

Picked one up at the Albuquerque gun show today. New unfired for $500.00.

Suggestions for a rear sight would be appreciated.

Thanks for all the suggestions. Went with the H&R as I was able to shoot one yesterday at the Seven Rivers regulators monthly match. It's not a sharps nor does it have a notable history, but it should do fine as a starter rifle and the price was right.

If you just want one for CAS,100 to 300 yds and a little bit more,Uberti 1885 makes a fine High Wall, many of them had great accuracy, THINK CAREFULLY luck to you Lee

Although a bit on the high end side, you can't beat Montana Vintage Arms sights.

Best bang for your buck. Got it all except high price. I have one on a Marlin in 38-55. Great sight.
