Looking for advice on derringer

Looking to start shooting some derringer side matches. I know I am going to go with a Bond. Anyone have a suggestion for favorite model and caliber? I am open to .32's, .38's and 45's. Let me know what you think works best and why. Again I will be buying a Bond.

32 would be my choice. The least recoil you can get works to slip hammer off 2 shots in about a second after picking it up. I can sure fire two faster with my 22 (not legal for us),than my 38s with lightest loads I can load.

Hey Deuce, Bond all the way. And now they make a version with a extra wide hammer. In my case, having bought a Bond before

they came out with the extra wide hammer...I just ordered the wide hammer and installed, works a lot better. I have done pretty decent

with the larger calibers but recently bought a .327mag...so now I'm able to shoot 5 different cart. in this barrel. You will enjoy doing this Deuce.

  • A Derringer is defined as an external hammer, fixed sight, breech loading or percussion ignition, small frame pre-1900 design firearm having one to four barrels up to three and one- half inches long. Derringers must be .22 caliber or larger. The Remington style over/under barrel configuration and the Sharps four-barreled Pepperbox are typical SASS–legal Derringers.

  • .22 Magnum ammunition is not allowed.

A gamer would say.

Appears 22 magnum is not allowed.

No mention about the 22CB, 22Short or 22 Long Rifle. They are 22 caliber, so they must.

LOL, I don't do derringer side match so I haven't got a dog in this fight.

Wouldn't do me any good locally as most place do a reload, I'm leaning towards .45 for that reason.

Deuce,

I have the Texas Defender model with an extended wood grip. The extended grip is a must if you have a larger hand. I have a medium size hand and fits right for me. The standard grip is too small and not able to grip with my pinky finger. With the extended grip, all my fingers are gripping the derringer. BTW, I use my main match ammo and it works fine for it, 38 sp. cal. Will probably get the 32 cal. barrel in a near future. The derringer has a trigger guard and I place my left index finger on it when firing. Don't want that finger in front of that lower barrel. OUCH! It also helps me stabilize the firearm when rapid firing. Have fun.

Think about size if you have to reload on clock. I have the Texas slayer iirc with the 45lc/.410 barrel bullets drop in, switched to the compition sping set and it's easy to cock and fire you can slip hammer the bond it will advance without having to release the trigger so that's a plus. The recoil from a lite 45 LC isn't bad and it's easy to load, I'm wanting 38/357 and 22lr barrels also.

Wow!! A reload with a flip barreled derringer on a side match? Majority of folks I've seen at side match day are not familiar enough with loading a derringer w/o breaking the 170 rule. So, it ended up being a two shot event.

Know someone that has a .45 snake slayer just put up for sale.

Holler if you want his info.

We mess around with some long range derringer stuff out behind the barn. It's easy to hit targets at 25=35 yards. One must use both index fingers in order to squeeze trigger evenly. Could start a new category and shoot all pistol targets with derringer, call it "Gambler", lots of reloads.

The Bond is a great choice, but when I found an American Arms in 44 mag I heard it calling my name. The 44 is what I shoot CAS with so it works with my 44 Russians. I did shoot it in a state side match once, and the larger caliber derringers are a handful. A 38 special is plenty so if you're serious about competing in that side match I'd go with a smaller caliber. I just do it to have fun, and with black powder of course.

The Gun Engraver made a few attractive touches to it as well.

Hi, Deuce

I have a Bond with several barrels. The 44-40 works well for fast reloads. The tapered bottleneck cases fall out easily.

Best advice I can give you Deuce is stay away....far far away!

I was under the impression those kind of grips were illegal. At least 2 state championships they ruled that way.

Hello Deuce. I've had Bond Arms Derringers in 22LR, 357 Mag, 44 Special (two sets of 44 Spl barrels), 45 ACP and 45 Colt. The only ones that were well regulated were the 22LR and 357 barrels. The poorly regulated barrels always placed shots from the lower barrel, low; and shots from the upper barrel, high. Probably due to the differences in muzzle flip associated with the barrels. Same results, even with very light loads.

Yes, the other barrels were regulated well enough for CAS but I appreciate the accuracy associated with a properly regulated derringer. Of course I do not know if any general conclusions can be drawn from my limited sample, but that was my experience.

By the way, I also have an American Derringer in 357 and it is poorly regulated as well. Maybe I just expect too much from my derringers.

Again choose is everything , I would get the feel of ALL the different brands that you like and get the one that feels the best in your hands.
